Hello everyone! I just set up this new account?

Things seem pretty cool here on this "fediverse". What does that mean though, the "fediverse"? I hear it's using ActivityPub. Could anyone explain to me what that means? Thanks!

@cwebber i think activitypub is some sort of monoid in the category of endofunctors

not 100% sure tho

Robin Black

@cwebber it's a drinking establishment with board games, I think

priryo

@reb
And because its federated you can watch the domino players take on the darts team and the axe throwers.

Feel free to boost this pretty widely, would love to learn about what ActivityPub is and why I should care

D. Moonfire

@cwebber It's a whole bunch of different federal and state services in a shared universe where the organization's personas interact with each other. Much like a mix of Marvel Cinematic Universe and Hetalia: Axis Powers.

@cwebber Oh, that's simple: ActivityPub is a protocol…

*recognizes you*

…you definitely know that answer, don't you?
Annika Backstrom

@cwebber activitypub is how people do kissing when they are very far away from each other

Rob Zazueta

@annika @cwebber "When two servers love each other very, very much, they may decide to do something we call 'federation'..."

Followed by excessively graphic pictures of message exchange.

@cwebber

i was about to ask you since you seem to have just migrated to this freddyverse thing

i think it’s some kind of website where the sky is not blue or something like that

Screenshot of an Akkoma notification saying that you have just migrated from octodon.social to social.coop.

@cwebber@social.coop I think it's a kind of lively bar?

@cwebber @djsundog it means 50 people are going to reply to this thread, and the people replying do not see a lot of the other replies

@cwebber

No problem, let me mouse-splain this to you.
You see, the fediverse is like a large cheese... :blobcatgiggle:

@cwebber

And I'm amused there's at least two contradictory ways to interpret the "its a trap" post.

@cwebber The #Fediverse is a searchable hashtag.
The Fediverse, as I understand it, is an alternative zone not driven by advertisers or venture capitalists, where one can jump between servers, with no switching costs as opposed to the walled gardens of Facebook and or BlueSky.

padda!!!!! 🍉

@cwebber it's probably some sort of like. it resembles a restaurant but it's not. and also there's "activity" there. i hear that these "activities" include excessive awawa-ing among other things. but I don't know

Hey there @cwebber! Welcome to Fediverse network!

First, to answer your question, the "Fediverse" is what we call the broader network of Social Media servers which use the ActivityPub protocol to communicate and share posts with each other: basically, the Fediverse is the network, while Mastodon is just a software. Other servers might use software like Misskey or WordPress to make and display posts, which is why we don't just call it the "Mastodon" network.

Now, some advice to get you started on here...

There is no algorithm here, so we generate our feeds by following people and hashtags. I recommend you search up a few hashtags and follow them now to get started.

I also recommend you make a post talking about yourself, using the hashtag #introduction, and adding further hashtags for the things you intend to post about. That way, you can find some followers right away.

If you have any questions or need any help, feel free to ask! 🙂

Happy posting!

...aaand when I checked the first time, I saw the recent signup, but not the introduction, lol. Welcome to your new account anyway.

@cwebber

[ignore the lenghty bullshit I just wrote]

Edit: Chapeau...you got me. If you are one of the brains that drew this up, you really don't need my explanation how this works.

@cwebber An ActivityPub is when you have like quizzes and darts and pool and such, and you play it versus Friends and Enemies and Dastardly Interlopers - FEDIversus

nano :transfem: :omnisexual:

@cwebber the fediverse is the network, the protocol is activitypub

Chip Unicorn

@cwebber
I think an ActivityPub is a place with ale and darts.

And a Fediverse is a really big car, I guess.

Maybe you can ask one of the people in this document: w3.org/TR/2018/REC-activitypub

ghostdancer

@cwebber IIRC last time you asked someone tried to explain it to you. Don't be mean.

Daphne Preston-Kendal

@cwebber ActivityPub is a gym where you can also go drinking

aeva

@cwebber An activity pub is a pub with fun activities like board games and craft projects. There's an activity pub instance near me that has an adult coloring book night. It sounds wholesome, but they can get quite rowdy!

Jens Finkhäuser

@aeva @cwebber We need to talk. Your activity pub sounds more fun than mine.

immibis
@cwebber activitypub is a way to reinvent the wheel if the wheel was email. It's email but with more HTTP in it. Anyway it's all under the hood and the real point is that you can see tweets @ other servers.
Neia

@cwebber@social.coop Fediverse is a virtual reality created by and for federal law enforcement agencies.

PastaThief

@cwebber The "Fediverse" is a number of different applications, of which Mastodon is one. They all talk to each other using a protocol called ActivityPub. But outside of that, their capabilities and user interfaces and so on may be substantially different. There are, for example, YouTube-like streaming video sites, GoodReads-like sites for tracking your reading, etc., and they can all communicate such that when you read and review a new book, your post about it might appear in someone else's Mastodon feed, etc.

@cwebber A logistical marvel of engineering designed for the sole purpose of distributing cat pictures at scale using everyday things you have lying around the house, like a NetBSD toaster. Moderation here means being careful not to overheat the toaster you are using to serve the cat pictures.

PastaThief

@cwebber Wait, did I just get suckered? ;) I just saw an earlier post saying you co-authored the ActivityPub standard!

Matt Keeter

@cwebber I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as ActivityPub, is in fact, Mastodon/ActivityPub, or as I've recently taken to calling it, Mastodon plus ActivityPub. ActivityPub is not a social networking system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning system made useful by the Mastodon server, ActivityStreams extensions, and client web app comprising a full social media app.

Natty :butterflyN:

@cwebber@social.coop It's actually called ActivityPub's Monster, Fediverse is the new email thing

AudraTran :debian:

It's a bit complicated to explain given Mastodon's shitty character limits but think of it like replying to a Threads post from Twitter. It's a series of interoperable social media platforms that no one entirely controls. @theverge has a detailed article somewhere.

ilja :pumpkin_owo:
@cwebber the "fediverse" is just the name for social networks who are decentralised. previously everyone was on twitter, but now people can go to different places. like we're on mastodon, other people are on bluesky. these are different platforms and is therefor decentralised. i'm not sure about this activitypub thing, but i'm pretty sure it's one of the bluesky apps or smthng.
Benjamin

@cwebber Wish I knew. Still trying to understand this information superhighway thingamajig.

Shiri Bailem
@cwebber ... you're testing the quality of the ban list on your instance, aren't you? lol

sodigay :pride_heart:

@cwebber@social.coop ok so basically you're supposed to make your instance as cool as possible, which is one of the most important swags of the fediverse. the single most important factor here is choosing a funny domain name, the longer the better (as long as they're not spammy).
