@peteriskrisjanis @pixelfed Apple Maps for now (so limited to iOS), but we are looking into OSM support for web and Android! dansup, btw there's this cool PMTiles thing for OSM, it's vector tiles in a single huge file from which clients load parts they need with range requests. Very self-hosting-friendly. Pēteris, this looks like Apple Maps. I'm curious what does it use on Android though, Google has gotten really annoying with its maps in the recent years. You used to be able to just plop a MapView into your app and it'd Just Work™, then they started requiring an API key, but then they started requiring enabling billing, with a real card with real money on it, in order to get the API key, even though the use of Google Maps on Android is still free and unlimited. For now. @grishka @peteriskrisjanis Yeah exactly, I'm going to avoid Google Maps if possible and look into alternatives for web and android. Apple does it right, it just works. @dansup @pixelfed Heck yes!🎉 A photo map has been at the top of my Pixelfed wishlist! Can’t wait to see these pizzas mapped: https://pixelfed.social/NickSherman I am very curious though: What data is used to place the items on the map? Will you finally start using geotag metadata from uploads? And/or allow location to be set with specific coordinates? The current situation for assigning vague/arbitrary/ambiguous place names has left me wanting for more, for several reasons. @nicksherman @pixelfed You will be able to define precise geojson data or it can be read from the images! @nicksherman @pixelfed Yes! Also it will be editable from the web/official app and we’ll have an API for this so you can programmatically access your geojson data and public ones too! One of my goals is to make it easy to mass assign locations to posts so you can easily organize them, with an added privacy visibility option to limit who you share it with, allowing you to keep the location data private and only visible to you on specific posts! Lots of geolocation improvements soon @nicksherman @pixelfed Sounds good, will reach out when its shipped! I appreciate your feedback, and tbh its crucial to feature development. Pixelfed is people powered, and it's quite unique to have a platform like ours that prioritizes user feedback to this degree I can't wait for your feedback once we ship this, there are so many possibilities with a feature like this, for example, being able to see Nearby Posts could bring a whole new dimension, locality!! Let's keep in touch 😁 @dansup @pixelfed I remember many years ago when Instagram still had a photo map feature, it was a great way to find cool stuff nearby (people told me they looked at my photo map all the time to find good pizza). I appreciate your openness to feedback, thanks for doing so much to make the Fediverse even better. |
@dansup @pixelfed that sounds amazing feature. What map it uses? :)
