@chiraag @morganmay @mcc why can't people just leave all those politics and stuff aside. Don't we have bigger problems like that. Water gets short. We are heading to a new war and all those other really bad stuff thats happening. And here we are complaining about everyone and everything. Sometimes i feel like being part of a medieval society that needs its scapegoats that they can shitstorm and talk about. Gossip is the thing today. And the guy just wanted to write a browser. @m3tti @chiraag @morganmay I am politics. My existence is political, because conservatives have politicized it. If you want to leave politics out of the browser, that means leaving me out of the browser. I know how this shit works @m3tti Politics is how we function as a society. Nothing is apolitical. There are just people who are not negatively impacted by the politics of everyday life. Those people tend to be white, male, and live in Western countries. @m3tti @chiraag @morganmay @mcc being apolotical only works for those with human rights protected by the current political majority :zerotwo_shrug: and just for reference, here is a non-exhaustive list of various immutable aspects of me that are inherently political (and constantly under attack): @m3tti @chiraag @morganmay @mcc The other aspect here: Browser-dev is political! Many of the decisions they're expected to implement in order to call LadyBird a "browser-engine" were made in the name of inclusivity. And not doing so correctly for a project with these ambitions can reinforce privilege. Looking at their code I get the impression LadyBird respects "accessibility" & "internationalization" better than "pronouns", but they don't really seem to care about it. @m3tti @chiraag @morganmay @mcc I'll also add that there's other such efforts to build a browser engine! Like Servo, Dillo, NetSurf, MicroWeb, & the commandline offerings. Then there's WeasyPrint for rendering to PDF. Servo's currently seeking funding! Also I'm pursuing my own effort, & am preparing an effort to help get others involved. LadyBird's not the only effort, though it feels like some get that impression. @ramin_hal9001 this makes totally sense. Never thought about that before. And i appreciate that you made your point with no insults and respectfull. Thats how we should takle problems. I guess i was wrong that nothing is apolitical @m3tti @chiraag @morganmay @mcc This thread is a text book example of the disadvantages of social media. Also smart people fall for it 24/7. Topics are discussed without enough knowledge on the subject and agreed on definitions leading to flaming each other (= anger & co.) The question if "everything is political or not" is another shape of the thousands year old discussion between Moral Cognitivism vs. Non-Cognitivism. Instead of fighting better show empathy & digitally hug each other. @buddhaha @m3tti @morganmay @mcc Great non-answer answer. Others have provided concrete examples of how everything is political. Do you have an actual answer to that? @chiraag @m3tti @morganmay @mcc @buddhaha @m3tti @morganmay @mcc "Not everything is political" only works if you agree with the status quo, though. Because that's what "apolitical" is - the "default" (status quo) is good, so I don't need to think about politics. This only works, though, if you are part of the dominant group(s) in your society. If you are straight, "gay" is political while "straight" is apolitical. If you are a woman, gender becomes political. 1/? @buddhaha @m3tti @morganmay @mcc It is easy to say that you're "apolitical" when you lie at the intersection of socially dominant groups (so in the US, that might be something like a white, straight, cis, able-bodied man). If you are non-white in the US, *your existence is political* whether you like it or not. If you are a woman in this country, your existence and your needs are political. If you are LGBTQ+, your existence is political. 2/? @buddhaha @m3tti @morganmay @mcc I have the luxury of not thinking about my gender if I don't want to (as a man), but my wife really can't. I know nonbinary people who haven't come out fully b/c declaring their very existence is seen as a radical political act in much of the world. Every single choice we make has *some* kind of effect (political, social, environmental, etc). Recognizing that just enables us to act to create a better world. 3/3 @chiraag @m3tti @morganmay @mcc As I said you have valid arguments and I agree. I agree with arguments for the contrary side too. This is not a binary topic and has multiple valid conclusions. Your statements are based on your perspective that assumes the existence of free will and some causal determinism. That is not wrong but it is just one of many valid perspectives and without prior agreement on such foundations it is not possible to find a common ground. So why fight? Just to be right? @chiraag @m3tti @morganmay @mcc Just want to add thank you! Last time I was actually intellectually challenged by another human was approx. waytoomany years ago. I did not think I'll mention causal determinism or moral cognitivism when signing up to mastodon. (if I previously did I was usually blocked or ignored) So, thank you for reading my crap and sharing your thoughts. |

Couldn't easily find a better source, but basically a minor PR to change doc language to bs more inclusive blew up because tech is supposedly apolitical (it's not).
