If you have a website hosted on Hetzner, take it off from their servers immediately. This morning I woke up with my instance down and this message in my mailbox:

"Dear Ms...

We have noticed irregularities on your account, so we unfortunately cannot have a contract with you at the present time. We have therefore had to close your account.

In general, if customers give us incomplete or incorrect information, we have to close their accounts.

We cannot provide any information on individual cases. Thank you for your understanding.

Kind regards"

Without giving any warning or reason, they deleted my account with everything inside (Thankfully we have back ups every 12 hours). I couldn't even log into their site to open a ticket. They deleted my entire instance.

I replied the email asking about what information was incomplete or incorrect. Their answer was "we can't provide you this information due to security reasons"

It was a Kafkanian situation. They didn't ask me for more information or indicate what was wrong. They didn't even warn me that something was wrong. They didn't give me at least 10 minutes to look for a new server. They deleted my account and any possibility of having access to their website in an unilateral decision. And I learned that, interestingly, this has already happened to another progressive instance. Another curiosity is that they host the website of AfD, the far-right-almost-nazi German party.

In other words: a progressive and feminist instance is overthrown without explanation. An LGBTIQA+ instance is also taken down with no justification. But a far-right website is comfortably hosted in there, for years now, because they are the good guys according to Hetzner.

Never, ever use their services.

Colin McMillen

@Ursalzona fuck, I use their backup service. Will have to move.
Thanks for the heads-up

@Ursalzona In case you need a recommendation for a free speech host that uses that term in context of feminists and LGBTQIA+ people but not neonazis, then look into 1984 Hosting.

I think they have a predefined VPS image for Mastodon even.

Disclaimer: I contract for them, so I know a thing or two about how the sausage is made there.

@alda @Ursalzona whilst I love their approach and mentality the prices are just way too high for me, coming from hetzner where you can get a VPS for literal peanuts... It is just not affordable for me atm

Alda Vigdís :topspicy: 🇵🇸

@MagicLike @Ursalzona A mom-and-pop shop in Iceland simply doesn't operate at the same scale as Hetzner.

Baessando :Ryyca:☭🇧🇷🇺🇳🇵🇸

@MagicLike @alda @Ursalzona you could try contabo.com. I use for other mundane things. But it is great. Cheap, fast, nice storage and good service.

@alda
1984 is cool, also the only domain registrar that isn't trying to mislead their customers or setting prices based on how "valuable" a name is
@Ursalzona

@alda this looks like a sweet place i might buy their low end VPS and proxy all my stuff through it thanks

reynir

@alda thank you for the recommendation (even if not directed at me)! I am considering moving from DigitalOcean where I have a VPS with (mainly) my website and personal email. Are they a nice VPS for email? Thanks

Baessando :Ryyca:☭🇧🇷🇺🇳🇵🇸

@reynir @alda you could try contabo.com. I use as VPS host. It's great. Cheap, fast, nice storage and good service.

Wojciech [space] Wernicki

@Ursalzona where to move in that case? tbh I know only Hetzner and DigitalOcean at that point 💀

DELETED

@wojciech_space @Ursalzona Infomaniak would be a Swiss based provider that uses a lot of open source technology.

Agonie

@nebucatnetzer @wojciech_space @Ursalzona They don't seem to provide dedicated servers and there VPS are expansive as hell compared to Hetzner, OVH and One Provider.

Baessando :Ryyca:☭🇧🇷🇺🇳🇵🇸

@Agonie @nebucatnetzer @wojciech_space

you could try contabo.com. I use as VPS host. It's great. Cheap, fast, nice storage and good service. Never tried as mastodon host.

Daniel Gibson

@pbaesse @Agonie @nebucatnetzer @wojciech_space

yeah, my experiences with contabo have also been good so far

GandhiTheDerg

@Ursalzona@ursal.zone Don't think they think, they're the good guys, they just have the Legal team and money to fight it out i assume.
I doubt they like messing with Political Parties, from a country where suing someone is the Go-To way of getting what you want

MagicLike | #AfDVerbotJetzt

@Ursalzona TF THEY ARE HOSTING THE NAZI SITE - ok so I need to find a new hoster what the fuck

catraxx

@MagicLike @Ursalzona I mean they are hosting half the internet at this point ... but yeah that's all pretty fucking bad.

Not sure where to move though.

@Ursalzona there’s nothing “almost” about it

@uint8_t I'm being polite. And advised by a legal team :piguissa:
But I know who they are :fascista:

Davy :ferris:

@Ursalzona Wow... Thanks a ton for spreading that piece of information!

I'm curious about the position of @hachyderm regarding this matter given that - if I recall correctly - we are hosted there, isn't it?

nate :verifiedtrans: :verifiedaroace: :BhjFlag_Autism:
@Ursalzona Teve uma instancia aqui que teve mesmo acontecimento, e aparentemente o que aconteceu foi que uma usuaria postou desenho de lesbicas fofas se beijando só???? não sei se foi transfem.social ou woem.men
Nahga

@Ursalzona@ursal.zone
Holy shit that is absurd. How can they completely delete all your data without an explanation? I, just a few days ago, moved my instance off of Hetzner's VPS, for completely unrelated reasons. I'm really glad I did now.

Arctic
@Ursalzona this is an absolutely insane way to treat paying customers, like holy shit. I haven't even heard of stuff like this on Oracle Cloud free tier, even they give guidelines on how things work.
eyrie :spinnycat_demigirl:

@Ursalzona@ursal.zone this is on top of the woem.men situation a few weeks ago: https://woem.men/notes/9ragjwecxwul3nis

so either people who have a grudge against you will shut you down with the weakest possible evidence or hetzner will do it themselves because of "incomplete or incorrect information" without warning and without description of the "irregularities"
also "incorrect information" could be used against trans people who haven't changed their legal name

Cysio :verified_gay:

@Ursalzona holy shit I'm glad that the worst that the Polish-French operation I've entrusted my data to did is blowing up my data due to a technician's incompetence (they've taught me how to do backups properly and to test them)

zayd
@Ursalzona i'd also like to note that they supposedly host mapsupport (dot) de, an instance that proudly hosts people in support of child sexual abuse and probably people who are actual child abusers
mia

@Ursalzona was this hetzner cloud or a dedicated server? did you specify a name that doesn’t match your legal name or the one your payment provider has?

i’m curious because i’ve been with hetzner for 13 years and have had numerous abuse reports filed due to 0x0.st (like the ones attached), and it’s never been a problem even if i didn’t respond in a timely manner.

Dear client,

we have received information about CSAM on your server:

http://0x0.st/ocYt.rar

Please remove the content within the next 1 (one!) hour.

If the content not removed within the next 1 hour the IP will be suspended.
Draconic NEO

@Ursalzona I wish more people were talking about this, people still push for and recommend Hetzner as a host when they really shouldn't be. I really hope this gets more visible so people stop using that awful hosting service.

txt.file

@Draconic_NEO problem of capitalism. Large companies can provide low prices. Most activists can not afford the high prices of small but much better companies.

Do you have recommendations for a different hosting provider for a similar price?

Hp0

@Ursalzona Yeah HETZNER goes a bit bonkers in the last time. No idea why. I'm currently with OVH, they're pretty fine :blobfoxdrakelike: If you have the money you can definitely try to sue HETZNER for Damage Costs

moagee

@Ursalzona wtf, thx for the info. i also host my cloud there. i will send them an email, we all should! whois.domaintools.com/afd.de #hetzner

MatMaul

@Ursalzona thanks for the heads-up. I was already working on a migration to Infomaniak, because they are more eco conscious mainly, and also in Switzerland hence more difficult to legally tap from my home country. Their cloud is pretty cheap, not hetzner cheap but not that far either, which is pretty astonishing for a CH company, with the cost of living there.

Nico

@Ursalzona if possible, you should involve a lawyer and have a chat with BnetzA about it. Immediately terminating a contract without further information doesn't sound legal.

Ursalzona :ursa: :Ryyca:

@nicoduck I'm in Brazil, they are in Germany. I don't know if I have money to legal fees in Europe.

Goblin

@nicoduck @Ursalzona
I`m not sure if it falls in the jurisdiction of the Bundesnetzagentur (BnetzA), but you can at leat try to open a ticket with them:
bundesnetzagentur.de/_tools/VS

You can also start a Privacy enquiry with Hetzner, based on Article 15 GDPR by requesting information about the personal data, they store and process about you as a person. That might give you some indication about the case. For that you can send an E-Mail to data-protection@hetzner.com

@nicoduck @Ursalzona

Goblin

@nicoduck @Ursalzona
If they do not give you information about your personal data within 30 days, you can escalate the case to the bavarian Privacy (BayLDA), which is the supervisory authority for Hetzner.

If they try to deny your access request, the BayLDA is also the next step of escalation.

In both cases you can start the enquiry at lda.bayern.de/de/beschwerde.ht

Goblin

@nicoduck @Ursalzona
I think both the Bundesnetzagentur and the BayLDA only offer contact forms in german.

In both cases it should be ok to answer the questions in english. To understand the questions, just use some auto translation tool.

rappet

@Ursalzona just GDPR them

Kristof

@Ursalzona Did you sign up through VPN? Are you located in barred country? Did you use different names on your payment accounts? If there are any inconsistencies there, that's a reason for closure. These are the things they are looking for. It's almost never the content of your website / service.

They did ban crypto mining and of course illegal content in Germany/EU.

Sorry to hear it went this way with you - but I've been with them for over 15 years and never had any issues.

Ursalzona :ursa: :Ryyca:

@iworx I didn't use VPN, I'm in Brazil. I signed up with my own name. We have the biggest instance in Brazil, feminist, pro-human rights, we have no illegal content, Alt text is a rule, because we have disabled people and we are all about inclusion.

And I have no clue what happened because they don't tell. Using "it didn't happen to me, therefore is not a problem" , is just lack of empathy. Good luck with these awful people.

Kristof

@Ursalzona you are focusing too much on your content/service. They probably just banned/barred Brazil due to whatever reason. I can wholeheartedly agree that it requires at least some decent feedback on the why — and they could have given you some time to move. The only thing I was trying to put in perspective is content vs owner/location/payment methods.

Good luck on finding a hoster that is more open to users from outside the EU.

Ursalzona :ursa: :Ryyca:

@iworx they ask for your location when you sign up and they have Brazil on the list, therefore they don't ban Brazil. Hetzner was suggested by a Brazilian friend who use their services for more than one year (he just pulled his sites out of Hetzner yesterday in solidarity) but it's not location. And we will never know what happened because they refused to say. I can have my conjectures when I don't have any answer.

Sergio

@Ursalzona Can you please provide sources of this behavior, I did not found anything online.

Ursalzona :ursa: :Ryyca:

@sergiotarxz
@ashten suffered exactly the same thing

mirabilos

@Ursalzona "a website"?

Was that a dedicated server, a VM, just some webspace, or something else entirely?

(Not that I disagree with not using Hetzner, OVH, DO, etc. but curious about details and implications because these things have fundamental differences.)

GandhiTheDerg

@Ursalzona@ursal.zone
Ah, Capitalism.
Love it

Dennis Koch

@Ursalzona @Hetzner_Online Hey Hetzner, what's your response to this? As I am hosting business critical apps on your services, this makes me think how safe they are with you. It's not the first time I heard about something like this.

Daniel Gibson

@denniskoch @Ursalzona
Indeed, explain yourself,
@Hetzner_Online
this is completely unacceptable!

Sergio F. Lima

@Ursalzona

When I was a child they said: learn English, because it is a necessary tool.
Today I would say: Learn to maintain your own server, because digital self-determination is a skill of the information age!

By the way, I'm sorry for this mess they did with your account :frown:

PS: In Germany, Contabo is a great alternative!

Piiieps & Brummm

@Ursalzona
Maybe your host is collateral damage of a police raid? At least there was one reported in the press: heise.de/news/BKA-schaltet-kri (German)

Ursalzona :ursa: :Ryyca:

@PiiiepsBrummm no way. We are not envolved with anything. We are a Brazilian left-winger instance. I find funny that people are trying to find what is wrong with us and, even with evidence, find hard to believe that Hetzner is a piece of shit company.

Go to reddit and search for Hetzner. I'm not alone in this absurdity.

Piiieps & Brummm

@Ursalzona Please, don't understand my wrong. I said _collateral_ victim and don't accuse you of anything. Far from it!

I just wanted to point out a coincidence. Perhaps they seized the physical server by mistake. Dumb things like this happen too often.

jan Anja :CrabVerified:

@Ursalzona thankfully I can't use Hetzner because 1) my country's bank cards are not accepted anywhere 2) they refuse to service russian customers anyway

This is one of few non-state universities in Russia, which was founded by a british sociologist Teodor Shanin. Its previous rector spent a year in prison and had to sign false testimonies against himself.

Don't think in stereotypes like "moscow = evil"

ari :autism:

@Ursalzona lmfao ive heard about this shit, id honestly go for hetzner if they didnt require and ID and / or 20 euro ( iirc they removed that now, so ur forced to use ID ),, i use contabo now, but yeah, oof ( contabo isnt much better either lmao )

Go Up
