Inkscape

Part 1/2:

Inkscape‘s development version has now switched to GTK4 ✨ , the current version of the underlying UI framework.

This is a huge architectural 🏗️ improvement for Inkscape, and will enable proper graphics acceleration ⏩ in the future.

This quick transition - only about 9 months - was made possible by donations, as we’ve invested approx. $80,000 towards it.

@inkscape Congrats to the team and thank you!

mray

@inkscape does that mean OBS will finally see all dropdown menus, too? :blobcataww:

@inkscape

Does an application UI need hardware acceleration?

Genuinely don't know. I thought it was things that rendered thousands of triangles per second that benefited?

Our development team asks:

❓How can we improve interoperability between Inkscape and LibreOffice❓

Tell us about your workflows combining LibreOffice applications and Inkscape.

What works well for you, what doesn't?

We are always looking to make collaboration with other Free and Open Source applications easier for you!

Let us know in the replies ⬇️

(replies will be processed outside of Mastodon, we may not respond here individually due to time constraints - sorry about that!)

@inkscape
* For SVGs in #LibreOffice (LO), I miss the option to "edit in external software (i.e. Inkscape), like it exists for pixel graphics. Same for LO drawing objects!
* The creation of flow charts in LO Draw is much quicker than in Inkscape. I wished that Inkscape can import/export LO Draw .odg files (and it's important to preserve connectors correctly)
* The rendering of #Inkscape SVGs in LO is sometimes bad, so that I sometimes have to use .png (or via ex-/imported pdf) to make it work.

@inkscape
I dont use them together.

I had a dream : multi pages in inkscape -> you did it !

So... next dream : an improvement of the layers management (merging/spliting layers between pages... like Macromedia Flash did with frames and layers) ! 😋 😘

@inkscape
Not related directly, but textboxes in Inkscape need improvement. It's hard to format parts of the textbox (It tends to format the whole box instead). Typing in Arabic is also horrible (alignment, justification, and other stuff).

@inkscape So many new features! The new pattern tool is looking amazing.

System upgrade couldn't happen fast enough today :)

Adam

@inkscape Thank you for all the hard work the team has done to release v1.3. It is an amazing application that I use quite often.

We’ve worked hard to develop our latest #Inkscape innovation ...

introducing Inky the AI Assistant :inkscape: 🤖 !

Prepared to help you with your drawing needs.

It recognizes basic shapes and can offer quick improvements to your designs.

Inky is here to save the day!

Inkscape 1.2 highlight 💡 of the week:

Are you making good use of the new gradient editor in #Inkscape 1.2?

@inkscape I am not. But, I am looking forward to learning and using this. Also, for accessiblity I would suggest capitializing words in your hashtags.

Orangestar :apartyblobcat:

@inkscape Oh yeah, I was pleasantly surprised to see it messing with gradients the other day. It's so much more fluid than the old "edit stops at numerical points" system.

Chris A.

@inkscape The new gradient UI is pretty damn great.

@inkscape Well, after I had to bury GeoWorks, I grew up with Quark XPress, Freehand and Photoshop (legal in school and at work, pirated at home). Tried several others on the side, like Corel, Pagemaker, Illustrator, several shareware apps (e.g. PublishIt!Easy).
Quark didn’t care about their (European) users. Then Adobe came up with InDesign (and listened to the users in the beginning), and like many others I switched happily at v2.0.

@inkscape We love Inkscape, it is one of our daily drivers! Getting better with every release! <3

Alex

@inkscape Indeed. In my experience inkscape has been highly vaulable for the generation of figures of scientific articles, such as schemes or other artworks. It deserves more recognition.

We need your input again, Fediverse!

GSoC student Osama Ahmad is working on this fantastic tool this summer:

Inkscape

Post 2/2

And the tool also has the other Boolean operations as modes, see example.

Now we want to know:

In what order should operations happen for substracting.

🅰️: z-order (stacking order)

🅱️: selection order (the order in which objects were selected)
