Exactly two years ago, we started to post links on #Mastodon via our account @heiseonline 👇

It took longer, than I expected, but here we are: it seems like this account now brings continuously more #traffic to heise.de than #X (#Twitter) in its entirety, although it only has ¼ of the follower number (and many of them don't seem to be active anymore).
I'll prepare some graphs after the weekend.

@mho @heiseonline you mentioned the number of followers being 1/4 of #twitter. But that's one good thing about #mastodon /#fediverse , you actually don't need to follow an account in order to have access to their (popular) posts. Number of followers here (unlike Twitter) doesn't directly influence your posts being reachable or accessible, it's the content/quality of your posts that make it shared 👍

Here is a table of more than 1000 journalists on #Mastodon, that updates itself – showing the ones most active, most followed etc. I took the wonderful table by @tchambers as foundation, but deleted some media organizations, so that it only contains accounts from people.
I want to make another for media accounts (and maybe even more 🤔).

@mho Tut mir Leid, dass ich hier den Part der nörgelnden Person übernehme, aber: Beim schnellen Durchscrollen hab ich den Eindruck, dass da noch gaaaanz viele deutschsprachige Kolleg*innen fehlen (und zwar auch solche, die hier zum Teil ziemlich aktiv sind). Viele der @riffreporter sind z.B. auch im Fediverse unterwegs und einige Spektrum.de-Menschen ebenfalls, um nur ein paar Beispiele zu nennen.

Was mich an der wachsenden Zahl von #Apps für #Mastodon fasziniert, sind die Unterschiede bei der Darstellung der Timeline(s). Selbst ein und derselbe Account sieht da teilweise komplett anders aus und es kann sich sogar lohnen, mehrere Apps im Wechsel zu nutzen.

Besonders ist mir das durch die noch recht junge @rodentapp aufgefallen. Die finde ich total spannend, auch wenn ich noch nicht weiß, ob/wie hilfreich es wirklich ist.

@phanpy wiederum packt aufeinanderfolgende geboostete Beiträge in eine Art Karussell, in dem die nebeneinander stehen.

Sieht hübsch aus und bricht das übliche Schema der übereinander stehenden Beiträge auf. Auch sehr interessant und ungewohnt.

@mho Tja Mist. Jetzt hab ich 5 Mastodon Apps installiert und kann mich gar nicht mehr entscheiden, was ich wann öffnen will. Bei phanpy gibt es das Karussell übrigens auch bei mehreren gepinnten Beiträgen auf dem Nutzerprofil, was ich auch sehr praktisch finde. Wünschte das könnte man für bestimmte Profile einfach generell einstellen (zeige mir alle Beiträge der Tagesschau als Karussell an). Würde die Timeline schön aufgeräumt erscheinen lassen.

There it is: #ARD, the biggest public broadcaster in the world, opened its own instance for #Mastodon today – ard.social
Its flagship news programme gets the first account: @tagesschau@ard.social.

On #Twitter the #Tagesschau has 4 million Followers, I am curious, how much it gets here and how fast. Could give us a hint on how active the german community on #Mastodon still is. The inoffical @tagesschau@squeet.me had amassed 53k Followers, the other public broadcaster @ZDF 13k in three weeks.

Some days ago, the ones responsible told me, that this is an experiment. They want to try it out, and see where it goes. There are no explicit goals, but they will track, how many visitors will come to their site through the links posted here.

They'll also keep the other instance dev.ard.social, where they will test and develop stuff. They want to contribute to #Mastodon and the #Fediverse. Code will be published on the GitHub-Account of the #NDR: github.com/NorddeutscherRundfu

There it is: Germany's second big public broadcaster is teasing, that it will start posting on #Mastodon tomorrow as @ZDF That account has 3200 follower, on #Twitter its 1,4 million.

I'm sure it will start to grow quickly and get a headstart on the other big public broadcaster #ARD, which has labeled its first account a test (@NDR).

Of course it would also be a headstart on the big public broadcasters, that are arguing with #Twitter.

While #NPR and #PBS have quit #Twitter (without mentioning #Mastodon however), Germany's biggest public broadcaster #ARD and #ZDF are not only already testing their own instances for quite a while (dev.ard.social/public/local & zdf.social/public/local): The first proper account is now live and posts news articles from northern Germany – @NDR

Let's see, if NPR and PBS find their way here. Oh and where is the #BBC?

Our account on mastodon.social (@heiseonline) was registered (rather "claimed") years ago, but left dormant until #ElonMusk bought #Twitter. Then I started to post a couple of links to #news articles every day. Our web-devs (namely @entropie) verified the account days later by adding a link to it on heise.de, giving it the green link.

Right from the start, I added an URL-parameter, to (totally anonymously) track, how often the articles were visited via this posts. While the number of followers grew quickly it became visible, that via #Mastodon roughly as much visits were generated as via #Twitter.

That encouraged me to keep posting and internally we started discussing, what to do next.
