Dont forget to thank the local NTP Gods for just making sure that you have not thought about NTP for the past year

@selea I was thinking about NTP just last week!

It was a welfare check, I hadn't heard from it in a while.

Turns out it was just there, doing it's thing and causing no surprises.

So, I've been involved to create a LAN-event for kids in a few month. So I need to hear stories from you about similar events that you where involved in, and the pitfalls I have to look out for.

Basically, we will arrange a LAN-party for kids and their parents, and we expect 100-150 people attending and bringing their own machines + some consoles.

I am looking into building a router (opnSense) and buy some cheap mikrotik switches.

10Gbit core-networking, to each table, and then distribute...

@selea Make sure you get the power distribution right… gaming PCs get beefier and beefier these days, 1000 watts per machine is no longer rare with the recent nvidia graphics cards and Intel processors.

@selea I wish though that its core features ought to be perfected before moving on to the next shiny thing.

There's a lot to fix before hitting 1.0:
- Discovery is abysmal (like Masto, but worse somehow) unless on the official instance
- Multisize posts are popping their frame while first having white background before changing to black
- Multiple web interfaces where some features are only available in one of them
- Federation is still spotty, especially between platforms

Should we silence mastodon.social?

Third spam wave in a very short time.

Update
Apparently .social has implemented hCaptcha - backported it from Glitch-soc.

Hopefully the mastodon staff will finally implement a long sought feature to support different types of captcha

:debian: πšœπšŽπš•πšŽπšŠ :t_blink:

mastodon.social needs to step up the registration process, the amount of spam coming from there is way to much..

I would instantly silence .social if it was'nt for the fact that this instance has a couple of thousands active users

@selea I’ve searched for this myself, haven’t found anything decent yet.

There’s an auto config XML file you can create, but that’s only for IMAP, pop and SMTP… No active sync 😞

:female_presenting_nipple:

@selea You mean the IMAP & SMTP autoconfiguration, where you enter an email address and the program automatically figures out the servers?

Dunno about SoGo, but for Thunderbird, that was placing a static XML at https://autoconfig.$domain/mail/config-v1.1.xml

Something along these lines:

autoconfig.mad-scientist.club/

@selea I definitely used to set up some self-hosted stuff, but that was a good 14 years ago... not sure if it'd still work. Will see if I can find any of my old notes.

@Gargron
Would it be possible for Mastodon to implement DANE-verification against other instances?
It would a neat security feature

@selea @Gargron

I once proposed it for Matrix Synapse but it was met with... not much excitement to put that lightly :)
