look up “Azealia Banks” plus your birthday and it’s guaranteed to be some fantastic bullshit

google search for “Azealia Banks december 8”

top result is: “Azealia Banks disappoints fans with bizarre, offensive claim 'gays are appropriating horse culture'”

unsplash needs a filter for "realistic, large depth of field, sorta-ugly camera roll images". I've been using this as my de facto placeholder image since it's the only one I've found that isn't glossy people having generic fun in a meadow.

a person in jeans sitting on a crowded subway. they have a happy birthday balloon on their head and a bouquet of flowers on their lap. the image is somewhat shaky, like it was taken on a phone.

“it’s okay, the original duolingo icon can’t hurt you” are you absolutely sure about that???

The original Duolingo icon depicting a detailed, textured green owl with debossed feathers. Its intensity catches you off guard. Its beady eyes are set within those feathers and a small, textured orange beak sits between the eyes

@samhenrigold that’s somewhat horrifying, feel like it wouldn’t be out of place in a film adaptation of a Stephen King novel

An :sparkles:

@samhenrigold Omg! This looks awesome! I'm running SpaceHey, a retro social network, and I'm experimenting with a fedi-version! Let's chat!!

alright it took the better part of my weekend but I finally back-ported Mastodon to iOS 4

an iPhone 4 showing a period-correct Mastodon app interface
The full-res mockup. The nav bar has texture, avatars are sunken into the post card, everything is correct

@samhenrigold For a moment, I felt like I should make a Mastodon client for PalmOS, but, alas, there already is one. github.com/knickish/heffalump

@samhenrigold beautiful... what do you charge?? lol

so many old iOS clients (not quite *that* old) I'd love to be able to use again. I know it's not that simple, but I'm pretty sure Amarok's source code is just around the bend.

@samhenrigold Can you share an ipa for this? 👀👀👀

The Apple DOJ complaint starts with an email exchange about a Kindle ad, where Schiller said the “message that can’t be missed is that it is easy to switch from iPhone to Android. Not fun to watch.”

I was kinda curious. I couldn’t find it anywhere easily but managed to track down a copy...this is what he was pressed about??

The iPod touch was the first Apple product I bought with my own money in 2010. While there are many things I could say, I’ll just mention how cool these Flash-based web ads were for it.

(I’ll also mention that this was for my ninth birthday and I did not have a bank card, so the specialist had to count a bunch of loose change and singles up to $200 or whatever it was)

@samhenrigold I still have mine somewhere in a drawer, last time I took it out of the box I wondered how I could have used something with a screen so small...

@samhenrigold Honestly, counting change and stuff when someone saved up was the best. Helping some kid achieve something they’ve wanted for a long time? Way more fun than selling another base model MD101LL/A to some rich housewife for their college-bound kid.

@samhenrigold I remember this for sure. Already got the 2nd gen iPod Touch a year prior, though, syncing apps and updates from the Macbook. I was a university student at the time and used it for music on the go and the apps. I couldn’t afford an iPhone carrier contract and did not want to switch carrier. The iPod was the ticket out I needed.

I can’t remember when carrier-unlocked iPhones started going on sale, but unless national law forbade it, Apple prev. made it carrier-locked.

YOU SHOULD NOT DO THIS but you know that little dictionary word lookup feature in iOS? It’s called UIReferenceLibraryViewController, you can use it and its public, but you can also strip mine it for the dictionary definitions.

Don't do it though since:
- You don’t have the rights to use the Oxford dictionary
- This is super undocumented and will probably get you rejected from App Review
- This could break at any time if they decide to lock this down

...but it is technically possible. Don’t.

The iOS dictionary lookup view for the word “Dash”
A custom DictionaryService class that creates the view controller, grabs its definitions, and then destroys the VC. I think, in general, we should destroy VCs more often but that’s beside the point.
Printing out the values:
- Term: “Dash”
- Localized dictionary name: "Oxford American Writer’s Thesaurus”
- Definition is an attributed string too long to fit in here, but it’s the definition with attributes to render it properly.
- Long definition is a super long string containing the HTML required to render a definition.

this is intended for the intersection on the #nyc and #tea venn diagram. if this does not apply to you, continue as you were.

alright now that they're gone, Kalustyan's (on Lexington) has such a killer assortment of teas. i was there this weekend and got a honey black tea flavored with bee pollen. it's delicious.

a touch id sensor on the bottom of the studio display would help make the price a little easier to swallow
