hoping the humane thingy comes out soon. i keep looking at my hand and thinking how bland this stupid piece of flesh is.

tbh I think it would've been funnier if apple announced they're discontinuing leather and introducing all new materials that are even worse for the environment

A lineup of iPhone cases. From left to right: styrofoam, CFC-infused, glitter bomb, single-use, endangered tree wood, liquid mercury

@samhenrigold “liquid mercury protects your iPhone from theft by ensuring the death of anyone bold enough to touch it”

i ignored jacksfilms for, like, two months and when I tune back in he's a sssniperwolf hate page. character arc twist outta left field

Wish FOB would have more Folie à Deux in the set list. That album is so criminally underrated. Nary a single skip.

do any of you use one of those apps that are "designed for iphone/ipad" but run on the Mac without modifications? which ones?

@samhenrigold yes, lot of them. Food ordering apps, Vivino, Undappd, SettleUp, Plex, Revolut, some money tracking apps, etc. I’d use more but a lot of developers disabled their apps.

Michał Jurewicz

@samhenrigold mostly Nihongo, and Guru Maps and few others map oriented, which is almost not existent app category on Mac.

sam henri gold

yeah maybe that website is kinda rotting my brain lmao

sam henri gold

men will literally go through hell and high water to get a progressive blur in their apps. why don't you go progre-see a therapist

sam henri gold

already know what I'm mapping my action button to

A Siri shortcut called "Is Jimmy Carter Still Alive". An alert is on top of the window: "Jimmy Carter is probably still kicking".
sam henri gold

I'm just checking the first sentence of a given Wikipedia article, looking for text in parentheses, and checking if that contains some sort of dash character. Not foolproof but it’s pretty good with the handful of articles I tested. icloud.com/shortcuts/1c091b0bf

¡a!n

@samhenrigold up til now I thought Carter died two weeks ago

sam henri gold

whatever happened to *PLEASE* move that bus

I’m very curious about the spatial video capture. What will the files look like? How huge will they be? Are they gonna contain effectively two video tracks and have the client stitch them together or is it just one kinda weird, distorted video with a lot of data baked into it?

maybe a regular video + a depth map as a fourth color channel?

Chris Barlow

@samhenrigold These are excellent questions, but tbh I'm still reeling from the revelation that it's pronounced “HEEF”

Григорий Клюшников

Imagine announcing a feature but shipping it "later this year" because you suck at project management this much.

Looks like the codename for the action button is "Staccato"

The new Modular Ultra face is codenamed "Foghorn”. It uses a single-use, variable font named “Zenith”.

The Apple Watch Ultra 2’s new Modular Ultra face. It’s very graphically dense. At the center is the digital time in a wide sans serif font.
Font character repitoir for a font titled “Zenith Beta”. The only characters are the 10 digits, a period, and a colon
SENTINELITE

@samhenrigold I thought this looked new! 👀

I wonder if we can use it in our apps. Hm…

sam henri gold

huh. they discontinued the MagSafe duo

:jill_wiggle:

@samhenrigold wonder if they’re makin a new one with usb-c

Eric Leamen

@samhenrigold Nooooo I was really hoping for a USB-C version that would accommodate modern camera bumps 😭

sam henri gold

I like how they just talked about the games that'll be enabled by the absurdly high-powered chip and then the slide showed the NYT puzzle app

Sam Spencer

@samhenrigold Oh great, Wordle Bot can generate snarky remarks about my game on-device! 🫠

sam henri gold

YOU BET YOUR TUSHIE IM GONNA REVERSE ENGINEER THAT ACTION BUTTON ONBOARDING UI SO FUCKIN FAST

sam henri gold

I think…I think I don’t give a shit about the camera at all. We’re hitting a point of diminishing returns for camera improvements. Low light is fine. Color repro is fine. Clarity is fine. People are just awful at taking photos.

Brad Ellis

@samhenrigold I've seen enough SIGGRAPH talks to know that there is more water in that well. But might be limited by processing.

Phone cameras have been good enough for like 5 years now. CPUs even longer. At this point just give me a 4" modern-ish Android phone and I'll buy 10 of them to last me for the next 50 years.

The worrying trend about phone cameras though is that the post-processing sometimes involves object recognition these days (Apple is especially guilty of this). That's a huge no-no for me. That borders on "analyze what the user is trying to take a picture of, then use AI synthesize what that picture would've looked like if it was taken with a high-end DSLR".

automatically delete all videos taken at a concert. replace it with a slide that just says "you will never, ever watch this video again”

sam henri gold

i like how that iPhone 15 reveal video managed to hide the ringer switch and charging port

I used to get really bummed when I ran into a task where I had to install Adobe and “dirty” my otherwise clean OS install.

But that sentiment has changed. I now get bummed when I need to install Soulver to do some deranged Material Design math. What the fresh hell is this

Determine a size for your widget

Each widget must define a targetCellWidth and targetCellHeight for devices running Android 12 or higher—or minWidth and minHeight for all versions of Android—indicating the minimum amount of space it consumes by default. However, when users add a widget to their home screen, it generally occupies more than the minimum width and height you specify.

Both the width and height of a cell and the size of the automatic margins applied to widgets can vary across devices. Use the following table to roughly estimate your widget's minimum dimensions in a typical 5x4 grid handset, given the number of occupied grid cells you want.

[Below is a table with the headers “Number of cells (width x height)”, “Available size in portrait mode (dp)”, and “Available size in landscape mode (dp)”]

The last row is n [times] m, where the available size in portrait is (73n minus 16) times (118m minus 16) and the landscape size is (142n minus 15) times (66m - 15)

this has been a terrible 24 hours for me
