Putting up tripods in restaurants without even asking staff for permission is a thing?! That feels so rude to me but I've never seen it happen.

whoops new hobby is generating screenshots of software that never existed to feel nostalgic for. (prompt in alt text)

Screenshot of a vintage Windows XP WYSIWYG web design application. The classic Windows XP interface showcases a menu bar on top with options like “File”, “Edit”, and “View”. A vertical toolbar on the left is packed with design and coding tools. The central part of the screen is split, with HTML code in the left panel and a visual representation of the website on the right. Within the visual mockup, the navigation header is in focus and its corresponding code is highlighted in the text editor. A floating toolbar is attached to the navigation header, offering tools to tweak its design. An inspector panel is present on the right side.

A packed toolbar with design and coding icons sits on the left. The main area is split in two: the left half shows HTML code with highlighted lines corresponding to the navigation header, and the right half reveals a mockup of a web page that prominently displays the navigation header. A floating mini-toolbar is tethered to the navigation header for design modifications. A detailed inspector panel is stationed on the right side.

Below, a streamlined toolbar with essential design tools. The canvas, set against a white backdrop, displays a website design project reminiscent of the 2000s. Features like buttons and navigation are being arranged. On the right, an inspector panel provides design details.

The toolbar beneath offers a set of clean, basic design tools. The central canvas, with a pure white background, presents a website design that harks back to the 2000s. Elements like banners, buttons, and menus are being adjusted. A sidebar on the right serves as an inspector panel.

you have no idea how bad I would've begged my mom for this if I saw it in Best Buy.

Render of a 2000s software retail box labeled 'Web Designer Extreme'. The box features graphic designs representative of the era, with a sale price sticker placed in one corner. The backdrop is a shelf at a CompUSA store with multiple copies of the software lined up.

Render of a physical software retail box from the 2000s labeled “AppKit”. The design of the box is a testament to the graphic trends of the time, with a mix of gradients and sharp edges. A badge provides a snapshot of the software's capabilities, and a sale price sticker is affixed to the corner. The setting is an original Apple Store, with the “AppKit” boxes displayed on a signature black software shelf.

you’ve been visited by the cotton candy lobster. no action is required on your behalf.

A vibrant blue and pink lobster perched on a weathered wooden post against a backdrop of calm waters. The lobster’s detailed features, including its beady eyes and long blue antennae, are prominently displayed.

quick crash course on democracy:
- not voting is never an option
- you don’t have to like who you vote for
- almost every election will be about mitigating damage; pick the lesser of two evils no matter how thin that margin is
- it’s totally valid to treat your vote as a vote against the other person (rather than a vote for your person)

sam henri gold

every election will come down to two people. one of those two people will win.

even if 2024 comes down to an on-fire bag of dogshit vs the exact same bag of dogshit except that bag is a vocal supporter of antitrust legislation, one of the bags of shit will win.

so you might as well pick the less bad one, even if it’s only better by the tiniest margin

Kyle Hughes

@samhenrigold if I can’t win the game on a walk-off grand slam I’d rather lose than win the game by hitting singles 😤

@samhenrigold voting for "the lesser evil" is also an essential strategy for gaining political power, as evidenced by the US Republicans. How do you amass political power for unpopular politics, say overturning Roe v Wade? Voting for "the lesser evil" consistently.

these people are experiencing a joy from consumer technology that no longer exists in the world. when i preordered my new phone i felt nothing inside. youtu.be/IDsUiW6OMDU

@samhenrigold even “new” product categories like the watch or whatever the dumb headset is called no longer excite me the way new iphones used to. there’s so little “surprise and delight” anymore. it’s just “oh yeah it’s faster, cool; oh they just made the phone’s AR stuff fit on your head, OK,” etc.

When I bought my current phone, I only did it because I need a smartphone to function in the modern society. I had to buy a new one because my first-gen Pixel was literally falling apart because I couldn't put it back together correctly after replacing the battery (the screen needs to be glued back on and I did a poor job of it) and the battery stopped holding a sensible amount of charge again.

Just give me a 4" phone that isn't extremely cheaply made, ffs. Then I might consider being excited about getting a new phone.

dude LLMs are gonna be huge for writing half-decent alt text

ChatGPT conversation.
Me: Can you write alt text for the album artwork for John Travolta’s 1978 album “Travolta Fever”
GPT: Album cover artwork for 'Travolta Fever' featuring a close-up portrait of John Travolta. He has a bright smile, wavy dark hair, and is wearing a black t-shirt. The background is bursting with yellow and red rays of light, and the album title 'Travolta Fever' is written in bold red and white fonts at the top. The overall mood is energetic and retro.

Four memes, alt text written solely by GPT 4 without any additional input from me. Really, really fantastic results. Note how it adds adds the watermark credits in the text, as well.

An illustration from the 'Is this a pigeon?' meme. On the left, there's an animated character with glasses, labeled 'Tech companies'. The character is gesturing towards a butterfly, labeled 'Disability dongle'. Below the image, text reads 'IS THIS ACCESSIBILITY?'
A four-panel comic. In the first panel, a hand reaching out of the water is labeled 'chronic illness patient'. In the second panel, another hand reaching towards the first one is labeled 'Doctor'. In the third panel, the two hands are about to clasp, and there's a caption that reads 'Your lab results are normal!'. In the fourth panel, the hand labeled 'chronic illness patient' is shown sinking into the water, with the 'Doctor' hand pulling away.
Comic titled 'My Productivity with ADHD Be Like'. It features two panels. On the left, a character with blue hair is resting their head on a table, in front of a laptop, looking exhausted. The caption reads 'Does 4 hours of work in 40 hours'. On the right, the same character looks surprised and focused with swirly colorful background, indicating hyper-focus. The caption reads 'Does 40 hours of work in 4 hours'. The artwork is credited to '@ZamiArts'.
Two-panel meme based on the 'Who Killed Hannibal?' format from The Eric Andre Show. In the first panel, a man labelled 'Trans People' is lying defeated and seemingly unconscious on a couch with smoke surrounding him. Another man, labelled 'Transphobia', stands nearby having seemingly caused the chaos. In the second panel, the man labelled 'Transphobia' looks straight at the camera with a faux-concerned expression, and the caption reads 'Look what being trans does to people'. The background watermark credits '[adultswim.com]'.

@samhenrigold This is one of the use cases I want to see most! Would love to see people still adding their own, but this is a nice fallback.

John Travolta has two albums on spotify and the cover art for both are fantastic

John Travolta discography.

“This Christmas” from 2012 features him and Kelly Preston (of Sky High (2005) notoriety) drinking espressos together.

“Travolta Fever” from 1978 is a young John Travolta superimposed in front of a yellow laser background. He’s grinning and posing like he’s immatating a train. Imagine him saying "chugga chugga chugga chugga choo choo”. Now think what he would be doing with his arms while saying that. That is the pose he’s doing. “Travolta Fever” is written in a cursive font.
