Where do you draw the not-OK line in this sequence? * Human reading websites to learn a subject. We're looking for an event registration site or service that 1) verifies e-mail addresses, 2) allows custom registration fields, 3) supports multiple ticket categories, 4) can take payment from people anywhere on the planet 5) has reasonable privacy practices and 6) integrates with the Fediverse. Does something like this exist?  @J12t #mobilizon comes close. Eg im sitting in the back yard have lunch, as I have in summer for many years, and I cannot remember it ever really be windy. These days itās almost always so. Is there a place where I can research wind speed data collected over many years? I havenāt been able to find one, @J12t maybe grab the NWS data for a couple of area weather stations? I'm on mobile, so haven't dug too deeply, but yeah: yesterday sucked, today feels uncomfortably windy too. @J12t itās also much windier here. I think in the last 10 years. Definitely in the last 20. A Union. We should create a Union. Like a labor union. But of Fediverse users. A Fedi Union. Just like a #labor union aggregates the diffuse power of many #workers into something formidable that can stand up to the concentrated power of large #capital, a #fediverse #union could stand up to the concentrated power of, say, large tech companies entering the fediverse, if needed. Tell me why this is a bad idea. āIs the algorithm plotting against us?ā Apparently there is a book. Hmmā¦ I wonder whether these algorithms have some kind of pinky handshake you need to know before you get admitted to the algomason lodge meeting. Based on a recent experience, it appears one can go through some well-respective computer science colleges and get a bachelor's, without having any idea what to do with a #Linux terminal / shell. Is that true?

@J12t many colleges have CS programs rooted more in theory than in practice, and you donāt need any computing device at all to study the theory. I think itās because many colleges originated in a tradition of intellectual hobbies for men so rich they could expect to never have to work for income, and recent changes have not transformed them into trade schools. And since trade schools donāt have software engineering programs, the closest thing I know of is boot camps  @J12t I stopped at an Associate's instead of getting a Bachelor's, but based on the courses I was taking when I dropped out and the remaining courses I needed for the Bachelor's, that seems to be the case. Of course that was a decade ago now so things might have changed.  Nothing in computer science / software engineering can be authoritative ā as there is no "king" of computer science/ software engineering ā But my guess would be that some of the stuff from Computer Graphics & Video Games would apply. Sometime when you find a problem in your code / setup, you are so lucky, because there was no systematic way you could possibly have found it within your lifetime. Guess that's me today :-) āGoogle risks forced breakup of ad businessā by EU antitrust authorities. Thatād be ā¦ something! Is #Meta going to port Horizon Worlds over to the #Apple #VisionPro? Or not? A bit of a strategy conundrum for them. What about the other Meta apps? It might actually depend on Apple and how willing they are to not go full walled garden on it. @J12t they created the metaverse so they could control the hardware, partially because Apple screwed them over with Ask Not To Track. No way would they port it to AVP just so Apple can do that all over again. There are over 100m refugees world-wide today, up by 19m in one year. Letās count ourselves lucky reading this, like me, sitting on my own couch. |
