At least San Francisco is much cheaper.

In San Jose, with the median American household income, you can afford 0% of all houses on the market.

In San Francisco, you can afford 1%. Much better! šŸ˜›

Your's truly has a quote in the San Jose Mercury News in article:

"New artificial intelligence: Will Silicon Valley ride again to riches on other peopleā€™s products?"

about the unauthorized use of web content for training of #AI models. In the interview, I pointed out to the writer that in the #Fediverse we have the same problem with indexing and archiving permissions, and the proposed solution is marking up posts with metadata. But that didn't make it into the article.

@J12t

Where do you draw the not-OK line in this sequence?

* Human reading websites to learn a subject.
* Hand-creating a website that summarizes and comments on other websites that cover a particular subject.
* Automating creation of an index of websites covering a particular subject.
* Automating creation of an index of all websites [search engine].
* Implementing summary extraction and advanced semantic matching on a search engine.
* Training an LLM on all websites.

We're looking for an event registration site or service that 1) verifies e-mail addresses, 2) allows custom registration fields, 3) supports multiple ticket categories, 4) can take payment from people anywhere on the planet 5) has reasonable privacy practices and 6) integrates with the Fediverse.

Does something like this exist?

AndrƩ Koot

@J12t #mobilizon comes close. I don't see anything about pand events.
I installeren it via #yunohost, my own server, my own security and privacy policy. joinmobilizon.org/en/

Congratulations @jdp23 for making it onto Techmeme with your post on #Lemmy and #KBIN growth!

@J12t whoa, thanks for letting me know! It made Hacker News too -- news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3

I really think the average wind speed over recent years has gone up where I live. Eg im sitting in the back yard have lunch, as I have in summer for many years, and I cannot remember it ever really be windy. These days itā€™s almost always so.

Is there a place where I can research wind speed data collected over many years? I havenā€™t been able to find one,

Dan Lyke

@J12t maybe grab the NWS data for a couple of area weather stations? I'm on mobile, so haven't dug too deeply, but yeah: yesterday sucked, today feels uncomfortably windy too.

Dangerangel

@J12t itā€™s also much windier here. I think in the last 10 years. Definitely in the last 20.

A Union. We should create a Union. Like a labor union. But of Fediverse users.

A Fedi Union.

Just like a #labor union aggregates the diffuse power of many #workers into something formidable that can stand up to the concentrated power of large #capital, a #fediverse #union could stand up to the concentrated power of, say, large tech companies entering the fediverse, if needed.

Tell me why this is a bad idea.

ā€œIs the algorithm plotting against us?ā€ Apparently there is a book. Hmmā€¦ I wonder whether these algorithms have some kind of pinky handshake you need to know before you get admitted to the algomason lodge meeting.

My test passes and I have no idea why.

I don't think I wrote the #code that would let it pass that test, but somehow the system ends up in the state I want it to be in. #coding

Based on a recent experience, it appears one can go through some well-respective computer science colleges and get a bachelor's, without having any idea what to do with a #Linux terminal / shell. Is that true?

@J12t many colleges have CS programs rooted more in theory than in practice, and you donā€™t need any computing device at all to study the theory. I think itā€™s because many colleges originated in a tradition of intellectual hobbies for men so rich they could expect to never have to work for income, and recent changes have not transformed them into trade schools. And since trade schools donā€™t have software engineering programs, the closest thing I know of is boot camps

EmberQuill :v_gf:

@J12t I stopped at an Associate's instead of getting a Bachelor's, but based on the courses I was taking when I dropped out and the remaining courses I needed for the Bachelor's, that seems to be the case. Of course that was a decade ago now so things might have changed.

der.hans

@J12t one can, but why would one want to? :)

#compsci people: is there any authoritative literature on data structures for augmented reality representations? It seems like a non trivial problem. #ar #xr

@reiver āŠ¼ (Charles) :batman:

@J12t

Nothing in computer science / software engineering can be authoritative ā€” as there is no "king" of computer science/ software engineering ā€”

But my guess would be that some of the stuff from Computer Graphics & Video Games would apply.

Tried to run Mastodon in a AWS t3 micro instance. That was a mistake.

Tired: defensive code.

Wired: defensive data structures.

Sometime when you find a problem in your code / setup, you are so lucky, because there was no systematic way you could possibly have found it within your lifetime. Guess that's me today :-)

Is #Meta going to port Horizon Worlds over to the #Apple #VisionPro? Or not?

A bit of a strategy conundrum for them. What about the other Meta apps?

C.W. Smith

@J12t

It might actually depend on Apple and how willing they are to not go full walled garden on it.

Mike Manzano

@J12t they created the metaverse so they could control the hardware, partially because Apple screwed them over with Ask Not To Track. No way would they port it to AVP just so Apple can do that all over again.
