@gamingonlinux Here I was thinking of learning rust finally but if it depends on unity I think I'll hold off. ;)

pang pang trululu trululu

@gamingonlinux haha i tried unity in game programming school THIRTEEN years ago.

It sucked so much I quit that school.

Hail Godot!

And hail people who make their own engines, they're a dying species and they need to come back!

Go go go ogre3d and all other 3d engines!

Changing our terms. It now costs you $0.12 for every time you load the website.

Am I doing this meme right? Unity Execs trying to explain counting installs to game devs...

Alex

@gamingonlinux Can I get a rundown on whats going on with Unity? I have a couple friends trying to take that route into game development.

esaporski

@gamingonlinux I hope this will make people try Godot. I think this year is being great: Twitter sucks now, Mastodon has a little more visibility. Reddit API changes happened, Lemmy is now being used for some communities I'm part of. Microsoft putting ads on Windows 11, maybe more people going to Linux (eventually)?

Back in 2019 Unity said "When you obtain a version of Unity, and donโ€™t upgrade your project, we think you should be able to stick to that version of the TOS."

Of course now the GitHub link for the TOS changes is dead, gone. So much for that then ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

@gamingonlinux
This was, I think, after the whole deal of unfair competition with a company that developed unity plugins for multiplayer. At first they were all about that "always the latest TOS applies".
This was just the reply after a huge backlash.

@gamingonlinux great! this has been kind of annoying ever since i bought the thing.

crisinho :duck_verified:

@gamingonlinux That's good to know, since I randomly encountered that problem a few days ago. Never ran into it before though.

Unity introduces new fees for game devs based on revenue and game installs - article updated based on responses from Unity (it's not looking great) gamingonlinux.com/2023/09/unit

@gamingonlinux I had been wanting to give Unity a try after I wrap up my current side projects but now I think I'd be better off checking out other engines.

Romain Alberich

@gamingonlinux the end is killing it. We can't tell you how we evaluate the number of installs, it's proprietary! Trust us! Oracle licensing level shit.

Misturgy

@gamingonlinux Just checked their forum post and they seem to have updated the answer to the question about reinstalls on forum.unity.com/threads/unity- barely 30 mins ago
(The "has always been" part seems funny considering it was the opposite a few minutes ago)

Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

Uhhh things just keep getting worse for this whole #Unity situation.

Chaos Spectre

@gamingonlinux The CEO did too, I only found out cause I went to look him up to remember what garbage he pulled when he was the CEO of EA. Same guy who earned EA the Golden Poo award two years in a row

Thad

@gamingonlinux Doesn't look great, but looking at his history he sold off twice that much in July, and more than twice that in June.

That doesn't mean he hasn't been selling his interest because he knew this was coming, but it means he didn't just suddenly dump a bunch of stock last week out of nowhere, either.

The Penguin of Evil

@gamingonlinux There are lots of ways senior execs do regular stock sales, or sales set up long in advance to avoid insider trading. That may well be co-incidence, and you'd want to look at what they sold in what patterns over the years before.

Unityโ€™s new revenue model is the stupidest Iโ€™ve seen since Stadia.

@gamingonlinux what was so stupid about stadia? I'm really curious as I liked Stadia and was sad it closed.

Keldrim :verified_paw:

@gamingonlinux At this point they should just admit even they wants its users to switch to Godot instead lol.

Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

This is fucked up. No other words for it. A REINSTALL is charged to game devs. #Unity

@gamingonlinux Is gaming something? Kids if course. But adults ... ?

Steve Duncan

@gamingonlinux so if you want to screw with a competitor, just buy their game and continuously install/delete/reinstall it?

Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

Good time to remind you on this in progress project to import assets from UnityPackage files into Godot... github.com/barcoderdev/unitypa

@gamingonlinux *2012 (2013 was "stable" release). I''m not sure when the headless version was available for linux though, I know it was well before the graphical client though, so maybe that's what they mean?

It didn't have steam play at that time either though so their claim is doubly weird, the original linux client only supported linux-native games, wouldn't even let you download windows games at that point, biggest ask was for them to allow us to download at least so we could use WINE.

Altay

@gamingonlinux In 2010, the Steam Play rollout meant you could buy a game once, and play it either on Windows or MacOS. At the time, it was speculated that Linux might come next. By 2013, "Steam Play" was a different feature: not only you get the game on all platforms, but there is also now the compatibility layer.

niarbeht

@gamingonlinux I think they just validated some of the stuff Phoronix found back then.

ch0ccyra1n :she_her::neocat_floof_cute:

@gamingonlinux honestly, I kinda expected them to pull this kinda stunt years ago. It's a very commercial software thing to do.

Game devs using Unity: "If you buy our game pls don't install it"

doragasu

@gamingonlinux For me, that could work on Steam. I have not installed most games in my library ๐Ÿ˜…

Alex

@gamingonlinux @godotengine can I pay some people on Fiverr to mass install a game? how difficult would it be to install bomb it?

Andy Korth

@gamingonlinux It's actually a bit worse than that because if you sell a million copies, they aren't all billed at the lower rate, the first 100k are billed at the higher rate first, then the excess is billed at the next tier's lower rate.

Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

Unity: Here's our new confusing revenue model.
Godot same day: Here's our new development fund if you can spare a few.

Well played.
