Half-Life alpha builds can't haunt you.

Half-Life alpha builds that haunt me:

I have some sort of legal obligation to document that the recent patch to CS accidentally builds the GoldSource era Terror-Strike code and not CS. There's various checks with-in stock CS 1.6/CZero to check if its running in "terror" but some chunks of the code were locked behind a Terror-Strike related ifdef. The ifdef was set on for this build.

There's quite a lot of misinformation on the Counter-Strike Wiki.

Last night I had to correct some information pertaining to the CS map Vegas and this morning I've discovered a page talking about CSPort. The CSPort page not only contains a bunch of non-sense but is also covering a fan edit to the build and not actually the real build.

You would think these would be edits or pages by silly little vandals whom hold no say on the Wiki, but these are edits done by people whom the Wiki have deemed as "Content Moderators."

This isn't the only time stuff like this happened on the Wiki too. ESCalation (YouTuber) found someone was just dumping their fan fiction onto the site as real stories for maps.

https://twitter.com/ESCalationOffic/status/1700904846629482752

At least in this case, it was just a random vandal. But the story still remains on the page to this day.

uhhhhhhh......

This is a hard one.

Starfield is some sort of weird merge of the Creation Engine and id Tech 7. There even appears to be stuff in here that dates back to Morrowind.

I'm just going to leave this as a big fat "idk" until one day the code leaks and we can do a little more investigating on the matter. There appears to be more id Tech here than in Fallout 76.

Here we go with a round 2!

Back in the early 2000's, there was a modification known as Wasteland Half-Life (later known as The Wastes.) I am one of the current maintainers for the current iteration of the project.

The mod used to be quite popular (not as popular as CS, but on par with mods like Action HL) and had quite a bit of content made for it. Problem is that a good chunk of the custom content made for the mod is now lost to time.

Not only that, but the team had made a lot of official content for the mod that never seen a public release that is also lost! This additional content even includes several updates to the mod itself.

Additionally, certain members of the team we've not been able to locate or properly identify.

We're looking for:
- Development builds and files
- Community content
- Official content
- Screenshots and general media
- Contact info for the last remaining unknown developers

So I ask:
Were you or anyone you know in the Wasteland Half-Life or The Wastes community and kept good backups of content shared on the forums and IRC?

Did you or anyone you know make content for Wasteland Half-Life or The Wastes and kept the files?

Did you or anyone you know run a dedicated server for Wasteland HL or The Wastes that contained custom content from the community? Was the server backed up?

Were you or anyone you know a beta tester for either Wasteland HL or The Wastes and kept the builds and content given to you for testing?

Were you or anyone you know from a community site that may of covered Wasteland HL or The Wastes during its development and kept media or were sent a build to preview?

Were you or anyone you know a developer for the mod who was only there briefly but kept what was given to you during the time?

Were you or anyone you know in the modding scene from 1999 to 2006 and recognize any of these names from other mods or gaming forums? Do you or anyone you know have contact with them or where you may recognize them from?

Known Filenames (to missing official content):

Alesis - Programmer
Asterisk - Unknown
^Apoc^ (James Gregory) - Author of the map Shady Sands (WL_Shady)
Molecule Man (Patt Andrews) - Textures

Link to our public archive:
https://archive.org/details/the-wastes - Files we've managed to archive with the help of various members of the community and team.

Attached is a collage of archived photos and thumbnails of photos to various maps. I attempted to group them together as best as I could. Some maps I have more information on than others.

Please repeat to get eyes on this:

Back in April 15th of 1998, a fan site known as "VX Half-Life" (later known as HalfLife Dot Org) released a video of their trip to Valve Software during Half-Life's development.

This video is LOST! Only bits and pieces of the video have survived throughout the years.

So I'm asking YOU data hoarders and folk who had the hindsight to make backups of your data, do you possibly have this video? Does anyone know anyone who may have kept this video? Does anyone know the people involved in the creation of this video? Does anyone know people who may have worked at GameStats who would of kept a server backup with the file present?

Attached is the only surviving minute of the video and some screen caps of the video from the archived site.

Known Filenames:

Half-Life at ECTS 1997.

The build that was shown off at ECTS 1997 is also the same build as the leaked Alpha.

There's something quite amusing with the development screenshots of C3A2.

The maps are mostly untouched between retail and the maps from around mid-1998. Some minor changes like a hallway being closed up and the portal sprites just being colored rectangular prisms.

You can't hide it Sierra, that clearly says Half-Life Beta.

Hand it over.

@Theuaredead if there is a disc like this anywhere just lying around, not backed up, I hope it's not rotten yet.

Did you know that Half-Life had Alias Model (Quake Model) support up until 2013?

That's right! The 2013 Steampipe update broke Alias Models! Why!? Who knows!

men only want one thing and its fucking disgusting

Seeing all of these Source 2 Filmmaker content on the Half-Life: Alyx Workshop just reminds me how much people want to be able to use Valve's tech.

But Valve deems Source 2 as "not ready." Knowing Valve, Source 2 will never be "ready" and plenty of people would love to use and advance the tech on their own regardless of completion.

Did you know that the Rat appears in Half-Life a grand total of 8 times across 3 maps?

They only appear in these Training Course maps:
t0a0 - 2 Rats
t0a0b - 3 Rats
t0a0b2 - Ditto

The Rat does not appear in Half-Life: Source, but is supposed to. The entity is still in those BSPs in Half-Life: Source but they had not ported over the NPC itself. They also didn't bother to port over the Tentacle Maw, despite being compiled in HL (but not used and lacks its model.) They did port over the cut Floater monster, despite not once appearing in the game.

How could they get away with this blasphemy!
