We're testing a couple new follow recommendation algorithms on mastodon.online, so if you have an account there, please check Explore → People and let me know if the quality of the results has improved for you.

@Gargron I think the key will be keeping it updated. It’s been on the same 10 people for the last 7 months. And I’m on social. Maybe I’m doing it wrong. Either way, let me know if I can help or fix things.

Eugen Rochko

Looks like the rate at which mastodon.online users follow others has increased by 56% after the algorithm change (from 1.2K per day to 1.9K per day), so that's pretty good considering follow recommendations are kind of buried in the interface.

Adam Blažek

@Gargron I feel like “algorithms” has become a word that people get scared by without understanding what it means, just like “chemicals”.

Eugen Rochko

I have to admit this year has been destructively stressful for me. I wish I could feel some sense of accomplishment about work done, but it's just not there, just this sense of a million other things that are urgently overdue and another million I'm forgetting.

@Gargron Late as usual, but Mastodon has been an amazing safe haven for all the Twitter refugees, and hopefully you can take some small comfort in that.

I think what you have done is enough for now if you need time to rest and regroup. It is stable and very, very usable.

@Gargron I wish I could help somehow. I want tech to be a group effort. I hoped all developers and mods workings on mastodon would feel supported and have a bunch of new ppl entering the work to build what we love...

DELETED

@Gargron basically lmk how I can support you. I'm here and you are one of my heroes. I have a LOT of free time. put me to work let me give you a break if I possibly can

#Threads is testing federation for a few selected profiles. I'm now following @mosseri! It's one-way for now, but it's exciting. It's a step towards the interoperable social web that we've been advocating for 🙂

@Gargron @mosseri How do you plan to properly protect users and combat dangerous hate groups like LibsOfTikTok? Groups which Meta are either unable or unwilling to keep off of the platform.

And short of defederating how are smaller instances meant to keep up with the increased moderation workload that this will require?

Bernd Paysan R.I.P Natenom 🕯️

@Gargron @mosseri One-way? I.e. you can read, but not interact?

Many commercial platforms that had access to open protocols were one-way and stayed one-way. The idea is to suck people in who use the open protocol, and not give back.

I remember the times where all important chat platforms from Google Talk to QQ were XMPP, and you could use essentially any XMPP client to talk to them, BUT they never did the interconnection with other XMPP servers.

Luna Lactea

@Gargron I think this will not end well at all. Didn't both Google & Facebook kill XMPP this way?

@Gargron Good idea, thanks for reminding me I have that album in my collection.

@Gargron Excellent choice! Coincidentally had a similar thought about an hour ago when I put on The Tide, the Thief & River's End 😃

Today is poker night on the @yogscast #JingleJam, the December charity fundraiser event. It starts in about an hour. One of the streams I'm always looking forward to 🙂

@Gargron @yogscast Their fighting fantasy stream is my fav. Time to go make dinner ready for poker!

Jared Nay

@Gargron @yogscast has been a quick game this year! They are only halfway through the time blocked off.

It’s hard not to say “AI” when everybody else does too, but technically calling it AI is buying into the marketing. There is no intelligence there, and it’s not going to become sentient. It’s just statistics, and the danger they pose is primarily through the false sense of skill or fitness for purpose that people ascribe to them.

Hoi_Pollois

@Gargron Okay. What do you recommend we call it?

Tomislav Hengl

@Gargron how our brain works it is also statistics in a way, but yes biological beings are still at the order of magnitude more complex than some 2023 super computer. FYI we wrote a little blog that reviews the key conceptions and the key misconceptions: medium.com/mlearning-ai/ai-tec

abracadabra holmes

@Gargron word. It's not AI. It's software written to steal your *everything*

Eugen Rochko

I've been brewing on this thought for a while, but I think it comes down to, AI has no place in the arts. Machine-generated art has the appearance of what it is emulating, but no substance. Like cake made entirely of fondant. Or cardboard.

@Gargron Good to see this, and not entirely surprising to see so many of the responses here are asking questions already answered in the toot.

rrb

@Gargron while I think the current AI wave is >95% BS, I can imagine use of AI in art. Along the lines of Duchamp's ready mades, surrealism's approaches to art by using odd processes, and Bill Burrough's cut up method.

Those are all ways of using tools to pervert automation and create mind bending art.

To do it well would require true genius.

About to watch the @hatfilms game show on the @yogscast #JingleJam. I actually don't know what to expect but I remember it was fun last year.

First roll of 120 that I shot with the Pentax 6x7 came back from the lab and unfortunately they're all blurry. Hubris. I thought I could do it handheld. Should've tried a tripod at least for one shot.

@Gargron Since the Pentax 6x7 offers exposure times of up to 1/1000s, hand-held shots should be quite possible - provided it is bright enough. Films with ISO 400 are recommended - which can also be used at 800 ISO with push development. I prefer to use slide films with my Zenza Bronica S2a 6x6 camera, despite the fact that they are more critical when exposing. And you?

@Gargron anything lower than 1/60 I cannot do my hand. That’s my rule for me.

@Gargron

Hi, unrelated thought. Not sure who to suggest this to. It is really hard to distinguish when you boost something. The grey to purple change is really subtle so I end up boosting and unboosting to make sure that I boosted. I think it is especially hard for those with some vision degradation. Just a suggestion to whoever. Thx!

There’s our baubles on the tree and #JingleJam in the background. Tree still looks a bit empty but we now have two cats so I’m hesitant to put the glass ones on for now.

Natural Christmas tree with a blue felt Mastodon in a Santa hat bauble, a felt Blahaj in a Santa hat bauble, a plush Dota 2 Phoenix toy, a somewhat obscured felt donkey in a Santa hat bauble, and a ceramic Grasmere Gingerbread bauble facing the other way, illuminated by warm white fairy lights. In the background, a projector screen showing the Yogscast Jingle Jam livestream, currently on office cam.

@Gargron Can highly recommend white “silk” flowers. Looks fantastic with white lights and a few ornaments.

db

@Gargron Speaking as the mum of two young cats, who has to gather the (plastic) ornaments from the floor every morning while the tree is up, that is the correct choice! even if you didn’t care about the ornaments per se, broken ornaments are v dangerous for cat beans. Merry Christmas from our house to yours! #CatMas

Derek Brauders

@Gargron that's probably a good idea for the moment....

Dr. Simon Clark's quiz show is about to begin on the @yogscast #JingleJam. One of the programs I always look forward to. £1.6M raised for charity so far!

We finally put up the Christmas tree! Not finished decorating, so not posting a full picture, but here are the Mastodon baubles my wife made, in their rightful place 😊
