We're testing a couple new follow recommendation algorithms on mastodon.online, so if you have an account there, please check Explore → People and let me know if the quality of the results has improved for you.

@Gargron It would be helpful if it displayed “follows you” for those who do.

@Gargron Я не хочу видеть никаких рекомендаций

@Gargron
How much will it cost to be recommendated?

JProl 🌍🎶💾🆓🐦

@Gargron these new algorithms are friends_of_friends, similar_to_recently_followed, most_followed and most_iterarions

Isn't so?

@Gargron

The thing is that, Ive been here for a year now and the users in there I know them all and did follow them from the beginning. I now instead of following users follow Hashtags. It is a better way to stay current with trends and content, it's a better way to organize content and information in my window. And most important it is an amazing way to discover new views, content and users #Fediverse wide .

@Gargron I'd rather this wasn't a feature anywhere for mastodon, I thought we didn't want algorithms. I really like the actual connection I make with people I follow and follow me. If people start being recommended my account and don't really care about interacting or have otherwise never seen me before, it'll be real sad to see. It also sets up promoted accounts and will inevitably recommend famous people and businesses, which is not what mastodon is.

Soskopp

@Gargron
Certainly an improvement, though some recommended accounts seem to be inactive. No point in following inactives or lurkers.

Edit: How often does it refresh?

Erik Uden ⁂🥥🌴🍑

It really does show better recommendations for my mastodon.online account - can't compare it too well to the previous algorithm as I rarely check that screen, but yes I've even discovered good accounts to follow which is rare.

@Gargron It would be a better idea to exclude threads.net (for a good start) and not to add an algorithm to reshape Fediverse as companies like Meta, Twitter/X, Amazon and Apple would want it to be for their own profit against its users. People feel better here without them.
Threads.net is a very big potential threat. Fediverse must not be reshaped and stolen as XMPP

Nikosangensei

@Gargron
Convenience is not always better... It can have unacceptable flaws for privacy. Mastodon is better because it is what it is and doesn't rely on algorithms. Many people want it to keep on not using them

Val

@Gargron +1 not interested in seeing algorithmic promotion come to Masto

chiasm

@Gargron the problem is, you don't know if the new algorithm is better than no algorithm if you don't know what the vote looks like without the algorithm. You'll have to do this a few times to know if it makes a difference. #science 😜

AmiW Streetart 🌴🥥

@Gargron Perhaps the profiles will change a little more often now. So far, it has mostly been the usual suspects 😉 .

Dave Diamond

@Gargron I answered yes but probably won't follow the person because I see all the posts I need following a hashtag.

Brooks Lawson

@Gargron it would be nice if I could read more than 10 words of their bio.

phatone

@Gargron I don't see this option in Tusky.

skry

@Gargron I can’t tell if it’s better or not, but I found one person I was not following that I wanted to follow.

hdante

@Gargron hello, is there support for browsing the local feed of remote servers ? I was thinking about that feature today

Gryvix

@Gargron I think the main thing is that people's bios are sometimes a bit vague to know to follow or not. but that's a people thing, not the algorithm

mcSlibinas

@Gargron checked now - followed 2 accounts. Other accounts looks good too, maybe i'll follow later. Thank you!

@Gargron
Hi, it is possible show tending terms filtered by language?

Maria Langer | 🛥️ 📝 🎬🚁

@Gargron

I do not want to have ANY algorithm-chosen content in my account. Please allow a user to opt out on the server level.

Algorithms are what destroyed Facebook and then Twitter (even before Musk).

Ericka Simone

@Gargron I think the key will be keeping it updated. It’s been on the same 10 people for the last 7 months. And I’m on social. Maybe I’m doing it wrong. Either way, let me know if I can help or fix things.

Eugen Rochko

Looks like the rate at which mastodon.online users follow others has increased by 56% after the algorithm change (from 1.2K per day to 1.9K per day), so that's pretty good considering follow recommendations are kind of buried in the interface.

AmiW Streetart 🌴🥥

@Gargron They had hardly changed so far. Always the same profiles.

TomatoGrilledCheese :saitama:

@Gargron Keep it buried. Algorithms always lead to dystopian hell on other services.

Drogo King

@Gargron Good. Keep developing features, most potential users don't really subscribe the paranoia some of the mastodon purists have. And to those people, these features are not "out to get you", different from big corporation platforms, you can close them and still enjoy a happy experiences. Just don't force your paranoia on us.

Marcus

@Gargron I followed several of the media outlets that are accessible now that @Flipboard is federating, so I contributed, 😜

Itanium Thom

@Gargron You sure those weren't just all that OnlyFans spam you guys keep sending out?

Eugen Rochko

@thomholwerda Yes, I'm sure. They weren't on mastodon.online and banned accounts don't count.

Andrea Grandi 🦕

@Gargron question (assuming you are talking about those in Explore -> People), are you able to track those followed using that feature or are you counting the general number (ie: number or users followed in any way) ? Thanks

Mori

@Gargron I’m generally anti-algo, but given the way things are done around here, looking forward to seeing how it can be used for purposes other than profit or evil thought-nudging. Plus Masto could def use an easier way to find others, opt-in willing.

Marvin Sequera 👨🏼‍💻

@Gargron I see that some people hate algorithms like they are a disease 🦠 but they are just the product of the person who created them, so If you have any doubts about what is happening just go and review the code, rewarding the new algorithm for recommendations It’s a huge step forward, Congrats 🎊

Hans-Cees

@Gargron I'd like to choose from 20 algorithms and switch when I like. One one site "I"d like to see my bubble friends " and on the other side of the spectrum "give me all people Who love soccer and Meat and bbq (in my case).

Lance Homer

@Gargron How much is this impacted by possibly more new users joining after the change? It seems like you would need to remove new users from the analysis.

Adam Blažek

@Gargron I feel like “algorithms” has become a word that people get scared by without understanding what it means, just like “chemicals”.
