Why can't more journalists reporting on "AI" straightforwardly say "This is bad, actually"? Case in point: In this article juxtaposing the grandiose claims of OpenAI et al with the massive environmental footprint of LLMs, Goldman still has to include this weird AI optimism:

Screencap from linked article, brackets indicate my highlights:
Of course, there is always a certain amount of madness that goes along with developing new technologies. [And the potential for advanced AI systems to help tackle climate change issues]—to predict weather, identify pollution, or improve agriculture, for example—[is real]. In addition, the massive costs of developing and running sophisticated AI models will likely continue to put pressure on companies to make them more energy-efficient.

Still, as Silicon Valley and the rest of California suffer through ever-hotter summers and restricted water use, it seems like sheer lunacy to simply march towards the development of AGI without being equally concerned about data centers guzzling scarce water resources, AI computing power burning excess electricity, and Big Tech companies quietly stepping away from previously touted climate goals. I don’t want Bizarro Superman to guide us toward an AGI future on Bizarro World. I just want a sustainable future on earth—and hopefully, [AI can be a part of it.]

@emilymbender the totally hypothetical & completely unspecified potential.

@emilymbender Well it's Fortune and journalists by default are writers for hire.

@emilymbender i listened to NPR this morning talking about the Olympics using AI and they didn't address any negatives to it.

@douglasvb Cats are generally always plotting, whether it be mischief or murder. These two definitely having something cooking though. Winston in particular looks like he's straining to hide his contempt. Maybe sleep with one eye open this week?

Ads on the web don't actually *need* user tracking. Browsers don't *have to* cooperate with those who want to surveil us.

@bagder always thought that when apps demanded access to the microphone to work, or demanded location, there should be a "yes but send fake data" option. The OS/browser/whatever should be on my side there. If the webpage coordinates so heavily with third party ad networks that the page won't load without ad metrics, then be on my fucking side here and send fake data. Spam the spammers. Is that so wrong?

:blahaj: Why Not Zoidberg? 🦑

@bagder Said it before; a lot of the time pages I like ask me to disable my adblocker.

I do so, but then the page still don't recognize that the adblocker is off as long as you still block trackers.

So then I enable my adblocker again, because fuck them.

@bagder well, no, but the marketologists made people believe that :cirno_what:

Couches and tables with chairs sit behind a barrier on the boardwalk. Umbrellas abound, all wrapped up and not deployed. A line of American flags punctuate the barrier.

If you wish you had a succinct, mainstream explanation of the horrors of Trump's Project 2025 you could send to your friends and relatives, People magazine has provided one. Please spread this link. No matter how bad you think it is, it's worse. people.com/what-is-project-202

#MAGA MACHINE is the #Project2025 #heritagefoundation BS plan to... (see image)

"In practice, Schedule F could easily purge qualified subject experts from advisory positions at the first sign of disobedience and turn federal agencies into ultra-partisan arms of the Heritage Foundation's mission."

Firing disloyal government personnel

One of the most concerning expansions of presidential authority would come if Trump found himself in a position to reinstate an executive order titled Schedule F, which is strongly endorsed by Project 2025. Trump introduced Schedule F at the end of his first term and it was quickly reversed by President Biden.

If Trump wins this time around, he could use Schedule F to transform the U.S. government into a MAGA machine by reclassifying thousands of nonpartisan federal employees into "at-will" workers who can be replaced via political appointment.

Project 2025 suggests that Schedule F be applied to discharge career civil service workers whom Trump deems "nonperforming," or those who get in the way of the administration's attempts at reform. (People magazine)

@stevesilberman

Project 2025 has nothing to do with Trump

Maybe you should read the 900 page document and understand what it is.

If you want to understand Trump maybe you should read FW Buckley or the RNC Plarform

Project 2025 is a media smokescreen so you won’t read the RNC Platform

Can’t wait for the DNC Platform

@stevesilberman This is a bit atypical for People, no? What’s the backstory on this?

@jeffowski AI is just another tool to make users lazier

Gavin Morgan

@jeffowski Well, yeah. That's the whole point of software since "Expert Systems;" to crystallize expertise, alienating it from experts. Then the experts can retire, and the next generation can develop novel expertise.

Why, has something gone wrong?

I’ve got an air filter and a water filter. I just need an earth filter and fire filter and then I’ll be invulnerable.
