So I've been using the BunnyCDN trial on mastodon.social's CSS/JS assets for a day and it's got this neat table which data centres the bandwidth goes to. Since CSS/JS assets load mostly only during the first page load on the site, this roughly corresponds to where our new users come from:

@Gargron
And it will probably grow due to the constant migration of users from Twitter. How this will affect to the current social media scenario? No one knows, but I think it can be a inflexion point, also in the awareness about the importance of software libre. 😉

minus

@Gargron Wow, that's a lot of traffic CSS and JS

Hello Mastodon! It is me, awake at last, shifting ever so forward in time

@Gargron Good morning!

(I don't care what time it is. Any time I wake up, I call morning.)

In the ranking of the best TV show opening sequences, The Expanse has gotta be up there

@Gargron I'll watch the expanse after your recommendation

Bert Latamore

@Gargron My wife, Moire,& I are new to The Expanse. We are watching the first season on demand right now. Planetary Radio did a blog on it recently that got me interested. So far we are hooked.

Deadly Headshot

@Gargron
What about Mission Impossible or Thunderbirds?!

Ah, looks like the trends on mastodon.social were stuck for a day, fixed them now.

elcoso

@Gargron You need more promo bro. I mean it is a good social network, in my opinion better than Twitter but you need people

Tom Tailor :damnified:

@Gargron how did you fix it? I'm having the same problem with trends. 😬

I'm trying out BunnyCDN for mastodon.social's CSS/JS assets, see if it makes the website load times noticably faster for users further away from Germany or not.

Let me know how it feels!

Although this isn't something that would typically be noticable for regular users anyway. It's mostly about that very first page load.

Paul

@Gargron I don't have any "before" times to compare it to, but even after a cache clear, it's loading hella fast here in the western US.

Iuri Guilherme

@Gargron users could still test it by issuing SHIFT+F5 to the browser. They would have to test it without a CDN to tell the difference, however.

My favourite character from the Expanse has gotta be Bobby

Defund cops, fund social work

@Gargron I was thinking about who was my favorite and all I could think of for sure was that my least favorite is the main character, whose name I cannot recall after watching 4 seasons of the show

Dicky Fishbags

@Gargron seriously mate? I find her unconvincing, sticks out... I just dont believe that shes hardcore.

This is massively better than the album version I posted by mistake before

Is it not possible to nest shortcodes in #Hugo? I.e. rendering shortcodes that are within {{ .Inner }}?

Jeffrey Hulten

@Gargron I think its all based in golangs text/template. While it is single pass, I think you can use variables to do some of what you might want.

https://golang.org/pkg/text/template/

Jon Yoder

@Gargron The shortcode rendering changed dramatically with the new markdown engine. You may want to try using the older BlackFriday and see if that helps.

Spent today porting our documentation from GitBooks back into Hugo. Lots of effort needed to recreate the various widgets GitBooks supports. Far from done.

To other Mastodon sysadmins: Check what pg_repack can do for you, especially if your server has been around for a really long time. PostgreSQL indexes get bloated over time and VACUUM does nothing about it. pg_repack can re-build indexes without downtime.

@Gargron postgres 12 has reindex concurrently

Jörn Franke

@Gargron Also do not forget to regularly update to the latest Postgres version. The latest (17.0) provides especially for vacuum some interesting improvements: postgresql.org/docs/17/release
