Hi. I’m Sam. This is my first post here. I’m a sign painter in Boston Ma. I draw and paint everything by hand without the use of computers. I’m hoping to connect with some artists and makers like myself.

@letterluxe Hello Letterluxe Signs from MGVM. I paint by hand too, but on canvas. Both viable and historic art forms. Check out my work at vilomah.life when you get a chance.

Tony

@letterluxe Welcome! Like the sign you did for the barbershop. It stands out well.

@letterluxe oh my gosh, that is such gorgeous work...! I would love for there to be more sign paintings out there :>...

@rek I love the style! Feels like GO web 1.0.

@rek a long time ago I used an app called Moodstats to track my mood. I think it's abandonware now, but it was really interesting and I've often thought about building a modern version of it. The only piece that I felt was missing was this idea of compounding mood. While you could add notes, there wasn't a system to weigh/tag influences or events. For example if I don't have my coffee, I'm much more likely to be grumpy.

Heading through to Glasgow for the MASTS Annual Science Meeting [1] today to tell a mathematical story about salmon, featuring some lovely illustrations by @rek. It is about a detail that comes up when trying to understand the effect of salmon farms on the wider ecosystem and involves a neat (I think) mathematical trick [2].

"A community of people living on boats in San Francisco Bay is being unlawfully evicted, and their boats are being destroyed. Local governments and agencies have been trying to remove the anchor-outs for decades, and are making the final push now.
As the remaining live-aboards weigh their options, they recount some of their struggles in this video."

It really breaks my heart to see this, because it's happening everywhere.

Cities in the Salish Sea are using these same tactics. "They're dumping sewage in the water!" Nevermind that the city of Victoria only stopped dumping raw sewage in the Juan de Fuca strait in *drum roll*... 2021, and that urban runoff continues to pollute waterways.

Also saying "We're concerned about wildlife!" while building private docks, extensive waterfront properties(often second, third homes), and expanding marinas everywhere. While preserving wildlife is a valid concern, many people who use this argument have ulterior motives and really don't give a shit about wildlife, they just want the boats to 'go away'.

@rek It's so fucking heart-breaking, and pisses me off. These people are just trying to live.

And like, these accusations of environmental harm are so bogus: let's check out one of the big homes in Sausilito (a super wealthy town) and see what THEIR environmental impact is. *scoffs*

Sunlight reflects off the Salish Sea as seen from the International Space Station on April 11, 2020.

It is incredible to see our home waters in this way.

halloween is such an anarchist holiday

so many other holidays are all about “family.” shut yourself in with people you may or may not like. don’t go out. nothing is open anyway. respect traditional family structures.

halloween is about community. go outside. meet your neighbors. share candy with them. nothing is closed. participate in this grand communal ritual with strangers. everyone hide your identity and trust one another.

@jepyang amazing take.

Also you can choose how you celebrate it: watch movies and stay inside, go out trick or treating, dress up or not, food choice is flexible... Like there's a wide range of ways, suitable for different types of people. Not too uniform, very anarchist!

@jepyang this is so true! and I wanted to add that for Passover you're supposed to open your door so that strangers may eat with you, but we've never done that in my family…

A keen horticulturalist, Tim Curry loves to develop and restore gardens. One time, he designed a garden for Freddie Mercury. Freddie came back from a tour and said to Tim...

"The garden, dear, it's dead."

"What? Did you water it?"

And Freddie said, "Water it, dear?"

Hugh

@rek I would *love* to have hung out with those two.

In this strange computer, rules can be sometimes applied backward, pressing the arrow button will unapply a rule and might help you recover and earlier state.
