FYI if you see posts about how "cohost is paying $46,000 a month for 12,000 users" please know that the vast majority of that is wages for the people actually working fulltime on the product, as they refuse to have people work for free or for subsistence wages

Mocking them for what is constantly trumpeted as the ethical way to run a business is pretty crass if you ask me

EDIT: some people are trying to point out the wages aren't the problem but when you mock them for having 46k in expenses a month for a website that serves 12k people then you're effectively saying the wages are the problem because most of that is fair wages!

I've even seen some people do back of the napkin math like "ok so I use this hosting then pay two mods with low wages", NO. WRONG. And what? You're gonna run a business without legal services? Tax services? Payroll?

So your business plan is to not pay yourself or engineers, underpay a couple mods, and somehow avoid all the overhead inherent to running a business? Okay cool good chat

Idk man I thought they had an uphill battle trying to run a business that is both sustainable and ethical under late stage capitalism too but I don't think it's right to mock them for trying and misrepresent the reality of their financials while doing so

@eniko Depending on its value, it may completely overshadow the short skirt, defeating the point...

Staying on twitter because you need the income is an extremely poor long term plan because it will only continue worsening over time

The longer you wait to build a community elsewhere the harder it'll be when you finally have to because twitter can no longer sustain you

"Oh well thats easy for you to say you have 5000 followers on mastodon"

1. Yes because I took my own advice and aggressively invested in other places immediately when the writing for twitter was on the wall

2. I had two and a half times that amount of followers on twitter, AND I'm poor enough that we couldn't run heat all winter, AND I was still on the tail end of a nervous breakdown when I moved here. It was not "easy", but it was necessary, so I did it, because that's how it is on this bitch of an earth

I don't post this to be mean. I'm posting this because I'm concerned for your future

@eniko also, people don't need to quit Twitter “cold turkey”: they can start setting up their presence elsewhere while still holding their place there, so it doesn't even have to be as dramatic as some people try to paint it. And the sooner the start, the earlier they'll have a decent following elsewhere and realize that Twitter didn't have to be the be-all-end-all of their network.

Nina Roussakoff

@eniko It's so low effort as well - all you have to do is have an account and copy-paste your tweets if people are still really attached to Twitter. Heck if their income depends on it, it's an easy way to increase reach.

But people aren't doing it and I think a part of it is the Ostrich Effect. It's too much to face the possibility that Twitter might end up dying. Too scary. So rather than prepare, the brain shuts down and pretends it's not happening.

Saw a headline saying "70 percent of doctors say COVID misinformation has negatively impacted patients’ health" and my first thought was: I bet, a bunch of people got covid thanks to the misinformation that the pandemic's over

Jenniferplusplus

@eniko it would seem that the corollary to that headline is 30% of doctors have been negatively impacted by Covid misinformation

people seriously posting like "use a chrome extension to hide all tweets from verified accounts! fight the power!"

and like. maybe instead of participating in the corrupt, toxic, pay-to-play fascist recruitment network you could just *not use twitter* and use something else? cause i guaran-fucking-tee you that quitting twitter will send a stronger signal than continuing to engage while hiding some posts

idk just feels like we've hit the "i'll do literally anything to protest what's happening at twitter except quit twitter" stage and like, you're just giving him what he wants

@eniko would be cool if someone built a tool to search for accounts that stopped posting in the last 6 months and then showed you the final tweets from those accounts.

Inken Paper

@eniko the internet does a great job of highlighting the futility of symbolic protest when the people your message is directed at aren't even aware of your existence, definitely aren't listening, and will probably find a way to break your plugin.

Gen X-Wing

@eniko Amateurs, I hide all tweets by not being there.

Yes I miss a few things (pretty much just info posting), but I rather err on the side of not dealing with twatter.

Getting real hard to not run heat as the temps indoors are approaching 13C/55F 😞

Eniko | Kitsune Tails out now!

Anyway it's funny people think I'm some big time successful indie dev. Well folks this is what being a hotshot indie dev looks like, not being able to run your heat so your money will last until your next game comes out. Living the dream

Still a lot better than working an office or service industry job during a plague though

i've been introduced to morton order/texture swizzling/z-order curves and i just wanna say thanks, i hate it

Josh Jersild

@eniko oh yeah I had to deal with this a couple jobs ago - was writing a mobile GPU device driver and was trying to use the texture unit to accelerate vertex/index buffer copies (since the built-in memcpy on the chip was shit for perf) and had to deal with how the "textures" (basically reinterpret-casted vertex buffers) were being interpreted in that space for the copying

good times

mastodon would do so much better if they'd just call instances "neighborhoods" and said that you should pick your neighborhood based on your interests, so that if you look out your window you'll see your neighbors doing things you find interesting. and that it's okay if you find out you don't like your neighborhood, because you can just move to another one! and all your followers will move with you

and then, yanno, make it easier to search for people you wanna follow cause that shit just sucks

@eniko Now with the corporate fedi in the wild, instances could be outposts or forts where we try to stay safe from the zombie nations

Jeremy Mallin

@eniko just so long as there is no red lining and there are no HOAs.

quixote

@eniko Yes! Excellent idea. "Neighbourhoods" is the perfect word. A translation from the Geekish which captures both the meaning and the intent.
