I love how beautiful lowtech requesting weather data from NOAA works. The US is doing weather right.

@neauoire
Please write them a letter saying so.
This kind of low-tech service is routinely threatened by the technological "progress" crowd.

@neauoire Oh how I would love some kind of embedded e-ink display where you could browse these!

Artsun

@neauoire Seems like pressure keeps going down where you headed, right?
The chart is beautiful indeed.

At the center of the town, there's a memorial for people lost at sea.

In the shrine, there's a Japanese fishing vessel that washed up on the Canadian shore. It drifted through the north pacific for a year and a half, and the folks of Prince Rupert fixed it up.

@neauoire C'est émouvant.

@neauoire you mean they was actually something to see in Prince Rupert and I missed it.

All that travel there and back and I thought it was for aught

Friends of ours on the sailboat Moonshine took this photo of us as we sailed out of Port McNeill, in Queen Charlotte Strait. We were on our way to Millbrook Cove, just around Cape Caution, on May 20th.

It is very rare to have photos of Pino from afar, with full sails :)...

During tinycodechristmas last year, someone showed me how to get halftones by using xor(x,y) so I could turn 4 colors into 4 colors and 3 inbetween halftones. It makes for drawing pictures in a 4 colors screens without dithering somewhat practical.

I've been working on some slides for an upcoming talk and updated Adelie to render tga files with these extra half tones :mac:

Sailing straight north, and having to change timezone, yeah, okay

They are enmeshed in the cancerous discipline of “security.” And in the worship of security we fling our lives beneath the wheels of routine – and before we know it our lives are gone.

@neauoire I thought to myself "these strike me as the words of someone who didn't actually have to struggle in the ways he idolizes" and turns out I'm right

@neauoire finally made my first useful non-toy program in Forth. It's pretty satisfying, I think I'm grasping more and more what it is and it feels incredible. It's strange how it focuses you on simplifying the problem instead of giving you infinite tools to bloat and to feature creep everything. I've never felt that a tool guides my thought in a good way quite as much as with Forth.

Devine Lu Linvega

@dziban that's awesome! I'm glad to hear. Forth is a superpower. What did you make?

Devine Lu Linvega

does anyone here have experience with graphics programming in #commonlisp ? i cant find any up to date examples of how to just get a window up and running.

Leg 3 of our trip in progress :).

We are currently in Prince Rupert(54°18′46″N, 130°19′31″W), to do laundry, re-stock on a few things, before we head off into SE Alaska.

the travel route of a sailboat through the british columbia north coast, with white dots denoting stops and a red line showing the path.
R E K

I broke off Leg 3 in two, finally, just because it didn't show the same amount of detail as the other maps.
I've also added the names of our stops, as well as the amount of nautical miles between each stop. So far, we've done 623 nautical miles, from Victoria to Prince Rupert.

A map of british columbia, showing the northern coast east of Haida Gwaii, marked up with the route of a sailboat in red, with stops marked as white points. The names of stops are listed, along with the nautical miles between each leg.

For a few years now, I have kept my daily scribbles and volatile tasks using the classic Macintosh application Note Pad, it's a very simple program that does just about anything one might want from note taking apps. I haven't done any changes to it except:
- Double-click selects a whole line, so it's easly to erase a whole task.
- Draw lines starting with a dash or caret with a little indent so it's easier to read.
- Various fixes to word selection.
- A pen mode for quick doodles.

@neauoire wait it has a pen mode now? by 2026 it will have an email client

@neauoire uxn version? I've been working on one based on decker [0] lately, it's pretty cool software.

@neauoire ...I really should start using uxn more. This is amazing.

I still can't believe we're allowed to just.. sail to places.

@neauoire Croatia and Greece have a significant "cruising fee". Portugal and Spain have a lighthouse tax, but that one is just a few coins and actually goes towards maintaining navigation aids.

So...

Ramin Honary

@neauoire how do you get your passport stamped? Or do you simply not disembark onto land?
