I was thinking of sewing some custom black merveilles masks to anyone who wants one, let me know if you do.

Back in Canadian waters from Alaska, we'll try to intercept our friends sailing from Hawaii in Prince Rupert. We're ready to shed our winter jackets and kickback..

We are doing well. We left Sitka and sailed offshore, stopping twice to anchor, and did two overnight sails. Had a bit of engine trouble, managed to fix it. We had good weather to start, but the sail through Dixon Entrance was very rough. More on all this later.
We should arrive in Prince Rupert later today.

@rek wishing you constant winds and clear sky!

We have arrived back into Canada, Pino is docked in Prince Rupert. We are tired and tired.

It had been a LONG time since we've done an overnight sail. The first was very nice, with calm seas, good wind, and so much wild life! We stopped pointing out breaching whales to each other because there were so many. I saw a puffin for the first time, many sea otters, and lots of black-footed albatrosses(they're so big)!

The second was in big weather, with rough seas... not as relaxing.

So stoked about the Diablo 1 tribute compilation album I'm working on with @caffeine @neauoire and a couple others. Currently doing a couple of illustrations for it 👹 :merveilles:

Over the past few months, I went down the rabbit hole (hah) of @neauoire 's Uxn + Varvara computer, and have re-emerged with an emulator!

It's especially fast, written in safe Rust, and runs both natively and in the browser:

Here's the full writeup:

@mjk congrats! I enjoyed the writeup, and was already familiar with your blog. In particular I’m looking forward to try the reverse linear register allocator. Thanks for sharing!

@mjk wow! this is very impressive! ✨✨✨

@mjk Wow, that's amazing. I've been away from the internet for a few days, I'm so glad to see this, once I have a bit more bandwidth I'd love to try and build it, I've only tested the js frontend and it runs everything well.

I think the only port missing is the expansion port? Trying to run the most complicated rom(oquonie), I get this:

Not to be mysterious about it, it's a source-to-source compiler from Fortran-90 to Uxntal, written in Perl.

I'm doing this for one purpose only: to compile my Funktal compiler into Uxntal, to see if it will fit. The signs are hopeful.

We're still in Sitka, we were supposed to leave a few days ago but the weather has been kind of crappy, and we aren't done exploring every little side-street and trail.

A restored totem pole in Sitka.

According to Butler’s model, a place is first “discovered,” then developed. Locals begin to lose control over decision-making, and laborers from elsewhere come to fill new jobs. The number of visitors climbs. At this stage, tourism becomes the dominant economic driver, and the environmental, social, and economic fabric of the original community changes, often to the detriment of locals’ quality of life.”

@neauoire Too true. Seen this in so many places. From big cities (Lisbon, Cartagena -- Porto is still clinging to its soul) to small coastal cities in Greece where the town changes completely on days with a cruise ship docked and on days with no ship it's a sleepy little town and the tourist trap shops selling expensive crap aren't even bothering to open.

The longest suffering (Venice, Barcelona, Baleares, Costa del Sol) are starting to revolt now. Protests, ban on tourst apartments, etc.

I found the perfect album for walking up and down Sitka, Батюшка's Панихида.

@neauoire
I was wondering if this band is related to Batushka/Батюшка who released Litourgiya/Литоургиiа (2015) which I enjoyed, and now my head spins and I wish I never looked 😵
