@dosnostalgic unfortunately for me, I always got LFN corruption when sharing the same partition for both Win95 and some older DOS. Ended up being more trouble than it was worth, so I opt for Partition Magic and create two separate partitions. 😊 A branchless port of DOOM that only uses MOV instruction. Takes 7 hours to render each frame. Tomorrow is the release date for both The Making of Karateka and RoboDoc. That's my evening taken care of. I miss the days when a brand new OS would just let you reboot into a legacy OS. Happy 28th birthday to Windows 95! 🎉🎂🎈🍾🥂

@dosnostalgic I had a machine in the office with a PCM/CIA Flash card programmer in it. Needed to be in DOS mode for the programmer software to work, and needed to be in W95 in order to transfer the data on the network. We just put up with stuff like that back then. @dosnostalgic You would have loved the old Windows NT bootloader which let you boot multiple different versions of the OS out of different subdirectories. (e.g. C:\NT3.1, C:\NT35, C:\NTbeta, etc) I don't even like Rise of the Triad (although I do admire many of its aspects,) but I think its current re-release goes above and beyond. Here's Civvie 11's breakdown of all the new and improved stuff in the aptly named Ludicrous Edition: @dosnostalgic I liked ROTT a lot back in the day, mainly b/c of the hilarious god and shroom modes coupled with the "LUDICROUS GIBS!" And on Christmas the opening screen added Santa hats and the music was changed to... was it God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen? I remember just laughing my ass off at the goofiness of it all Most of my gaming happens on retro consoles at this point, so I didn't even know this re-release was out there. Thanks for sharing! Just remember:

@dosnostalgic Fun fact: that message was still present on XP machines if installed on computers that didn't support software power-off! Duplix (Alexey Pajitnov, Vadim Gerasimov, 1989) #DOSGaming #SovietVideogames #RussianVideogames 👆 This is the simultaneous 2 player version of Tetris that (I believe) Pajitnov and Gerasimov originally developed for the Moscow Medical Center at the request of Vladimir Pokhilko (RIP). Currently only the German language version is archived. Just learned that both authors of LZ77 and LZ78 compression method died this year. Prof. Abraham Lempel died 7 weeks ago. Two DOS versions of Tetris make appearance in the Tetris movie trailer, both presented as being played on a Famicom:

@dosnostalgic That 1986 one, that's the Tetris that ruled my dreams and delayed my uni essays. Of course, I wasn't playing it on a Famicom either. :) @dosnostalgic I loved the 1988 one! Instantly recognizable.
Wonder if they couldn't get the rights to show the Famicom one for some reason. @dosnostalgic Both also seem to be added in post. Guess they didn’t want to go through the hassle of finding functional CRTs and film them… @dosnostalgic is that some Xmas Doom I see? One of the first major multiman mapping projects if I recall. Just a year after Doom 2s release, 1995. Newest update of Microsoft Flight Simulator brings you... a playable Microsoft Flight Simulator 4.0 inside the game! #DOSGaming I think it's sort of impossible to describe just how big the Dancing Baby was during the era when the Internet only began entering most people's lives. Any of you have that cool glow in the dark "Alone in the Dark: The Trilogy" box? #DOSGaming @dosnostalgic wait, it glows in the dark? I think I still have this from a trade, but I'll have to double check. |
@dosnostalgic This, like the Williams' remake of Colossal Cave Adventures, just confuses me. The originals of both are widely available, and this just seems like nostalgia mining. Bard's Tale did this as well a few years ago.
You can't go back to those old days. Let them be pleasant memories.
