When the newspaper editor just says “fuck it.”

“The bar for what is regarded as a “shitshow” in Britain has been raised substantially since the 2016 referendum”

@nazgul we really ought to create some kind of union in Europe, which would allow free movement across borders for all European citizens, so we could get rid of all this nonsense.

I envision it could work as a trade union too, and handle cross border issues like climate change and consumer rights.

I know it sounds revolutionary, but I really think it could work.

@nazgul I went to London City the day after that referendum and was there for a week. It was like watching a nation implode. Every morning it was new chaos.

Here’s the story of someone who accidentally started a union.

Pulled this off of FB, original source at askamanager.org/2024/03/the-fa

In answer to the question, “Machiavellian things you’ve seen or done at work?”

Wasn't me but a guy I knew. He was a fan of certain
"mind altering vegetation," as was his coworker. He agreed to sell some to his coworker and soon became "the guy" at the auto repair place. One of the managers noticed him always having quick little chats with his coworkers and ran in the complete wrong direction with it and thought my friend was trying to organize a union and he (the manager) was going to stop that.
So my friend was terrified he was going to get fired until he realized that retaliating against him for selling pot was totally legal but retaliating against him for pro-union activity wasn't. And so, to protect himself from being fired for being mistaken as a union organizer, he organized a union.

I don’t usually get to play along with #Caturday, but I've been taking photos of what I call "The Gate Dogs of #Guanajuato”; the dogs that guard the gates, or perch on the roofs and terraces of the city. And sometimes a cat or two sneaks in.

As always, description and context in the alt-text.

The stone floor of a callejón meets the stone wall of a house. One square stone has been removed, and in it grows a small tree. Curled up next to the tree, in a bed of flower petals, back towards us, is a Siamese-ish looking cat.
As Guanajuato is built on hills, the callejones are often flanked by stone walls that build up to a terrace for the next house or a street. At the top of one of these, right at the corner, a black cat crouches, peering down at me (and asking to be rescued, but hey, it got up there by itself, so…).

Reddit’s CEO, who claimed to want to emulate Musk, is doing an absolutely smashing job.

He forced some subreddits to open again, but of course he can’t force people to post what he wants.

r/steam users are now only posting articles about hot water vapor.
r/pics users are only posting sexy photos of John Oliver
r/gifs and r/Art are also limiting content to John Oliver.

Screen shot from r/Pics

Anyway, we - the so-called "landed gentry" - definitely want to comply with the wishes of the
"royal court," and they've told us that we need to run the subreddit in the way that its members want. To that end, we figured that the only reasonable thing to do was directly ask how you'd like things to progress from here.
Which of the following should we do?
• Return to normal operations
•Only allow images of John Oliver looking sexy
To be clear, if people choose the second option, screen-grabs from videos will be allowed (provided that there aren't any visible logos, inserted graphics, or other digital elements present). You could - if you wanted to - look through episodes of Last Week Tonight on YouTube, find moments featuring John Oliver at his sexiest, then post images of those moments here.
It's entirely up to you! Whatever the €9 r/pics community decides is best, we'll respect!
Vote, friends! Vote now!
(You can vote by upvoting either of the comments in the thread below.)
Voting has now closed.
Our final tally is as follows:
Return to normal operations: -2,329 votes
Only allow images of John Oliver looking sexy:
37,331 votes
It would seem that the community has spoken!

Reddit's "landed gentry" should build a castle.

And call it Spamelot. 🥸🏰🥥🏇

@nazgul

I took a peek this morning and saw /r/videos is in on it now too.

> To that end, we will only be allowing the finest of videos to grace our subreddit’s queue ... Going forward, we will only allow videos featuring the one and only John Oliver. That’s right, Zazu himself is going to make up all of /r/Videos’ content going forward. We liked what our sister subreddit /r/Pics was doing, but in true /r/Videos fashion, we're going to do it 30 times per second instead.

@nazgul

I've actually boycotted Reddit for a week now... But reading about all of the fun responses to this whole thing makes me want to go back and join in.

I might even join a few new fucking subs to ruin some fucking ad revenue.

Ford had some cleverness (I'm not sure I'd give Elon even that) in designing and setting up factories to mass produce inexpensive but adequately reliable for the time cars, when that is exactly what the market of the time and place wanted.

One of his problems was that he thought whatever other notion that crossed through his head was brilliant, when often it was the opposite. This sometimes led to big failures.

@nazgul We have known this for a long time: the line between genius and madness is very narrow.

@nazgul It's interesting both their first and second names are double and single syllables 🤔

Given that twitter is going to start charging for api usage next week, but has neglected to give anyone any info about rates, I recommend running movetodon.org/ one last time while you still can.

None of the migration tools will work after the 8th (give or take some timezones).

If Movetodon isn’t working for you, here’s a list of similar services.

@nazgul Bookmarked. I have found a lot of people on mastodon, but there are still a lot missing.

I keep seeing articles, about people trying to violently overturn election results, that use phrases like “motivated by election lies”.

They aren’t motivated by lies, they are motivated by not liking the result. Repeating the lies just makes them feel powerful because it makes them part of the grift. They think they’re fooling people.

Blaming the lies lulls us into thinking that this is an education/disinformation problem which, if addressed, will eliminate the violence.

These folks aren’t deluded. They’ve learned from their leaders that violence and lying are the route to power.

For most of my life I thought these problems could be solved by education. I no longer do. As far as I can tell, about 30% of the population believes that getting away with grifts and bullying people is proof of power and leadership that should be respected, worshiped, and emulated.

We can’t educate these folks. We can only build a society that ensures that they cannot gain control. Unfortunately, the entire human race has largely failed to do so, and we’re suffering the consequences on a planetary scale.

Every day we act as though they don’t *know* that the elections were valid, is a day we risk losing the fight for democracy, equality, and a stable environment.

@nazgul I don't think I agree. Even if the people are complicit in the lies, that's a cultural vector that can be impacted by changing the culture.

I mean, I'm not sure what other alternative there is, but the fact that these things come and go in waves shows that it's not a constant and can be affected by the surrounding culture.

The problem is that changing culture through education takes a generation, at best. You need short term mitigations, too.
