The average age of homebuyers in the US is now 56 The median age of first-time buyers is 38 (up from 34 last year) The share of first-time buyers dropped from 32 to 24% The median home price is now $435,000, which is up THIRTY NINE PERCENT since 2020 This is so astoundingly fucked At this point, is there any way to keep an active #Twitter account *without* being part of the problem? It doesn't matter anymore if some of your audience or customers or favorite people are there. Twitter has devolved into a place wholly in support of fascism and oligarchy. From the macro to micro, whether it's malicious leadership or ostensibly 'small' policy changes like this. Twitter is not a social media platform anymore. Top to bottom, it is a vehicle for fascism. Our dog has learned that the #AppleTV ‘whoom’ sound of exiting an app means we might get up from the couch, so he thinks it’s playtime. @chartier I used to have a roommate whose dog knew we were getting ready to go to bed when the amp in my AV receiver would click off. @chartier ours will shush us out of the living room if we warch TV for too long, so she can sleep on the couch in peace and quiet. Every time I see someone using a phone to pay for something, I wonder how dumb can a person get. @chartier Fuck Google. Fuck Amazon.

@chartier sure but what if it's the next big thing? Wouldn't want to miss out. Hey, folks who are customers of a traditional web host (Dreamhost, Namecheap, etc.): If you get a minute, consider asking them nicely if they’re working on adding support for #fediverse apps, #Mastodon probably being the most visible right now. Hopefully with one-click install options like WordPress. It would be a great way to bring more options to the decentralized web and people who want to use it. Hat tip to @feditips for helping with this idea.

@chartier @feditips As someone who has worked for a larger/started a smaller hosting company, I can that especially for the larger hosts, it isn't advantageous for them to devote the time building it out for their environments. The reason WordPress and other PHP based applications work is it can share the same core services (LAMP for example) as hundreds of other sites without additional overhead. Then there is the support cost of training and staffing. 1/ @chartier @feditips It will take time. I am working on a few ideas of how it could work, but if you are looking for visibility with the bigger companies, it would be better to write a article about how to set it up with them on VPS or dedicated servers. 2/2 Huh. Wishful thinking, but I wonder if it’s actually getting to him. This isn’t his only whiny shitpost about #Mastodon. @chartier Looks like it IS getting to him! Where there's smoke, there's fire. Fire out of Elon's butthole :) Thinking about starting a #Mastodon instance, but not sure about a theme to build on. I live in #Chicago - are instances based around large cities or locations a thing? I generally work in and know #tech, but we already have an instance or three of those. Less generally I'm mostly in the #Apple neck of the woods, could that be a thing? I love games, but we already have elekk.xyz and others covering the (board) game space. Thoughts? Advice? @chartier Local instances should totally be more of a thing. It's such a great way for the serendipity of the local timeline to actually mean something Since Instagram announced it’s moving away from photo sharing, now is a good time to bump my post about its many alternatives, including Flickr, #PixelFed, VSCO, Tumblr, and others. https://finertech.com/2019/03/17/there-is-a-good-variety-of-alternatives-to-instagram/ Any folks who work on Mastodon around? Has there been any thought given to the possibility of renaming "toot"? When I try pitching Masto to others, it is often the first objection or reason to dismiss it. I try to bring up the early objection and dismissal of "tweet," but it doesn't help much. |
@chartier I was just talking to someone who applied for a job with Mastodon. The lack of VC funding means fewer perks, but the final project is aligned with its users in a way no other social media is.
I do have some faint hope that BlueSky's algorithmic choice can curtail the worst parts of ad funding, but the surveillance incentive is still there.
@chartier what a surprise that the advertising company is putting ads on their thing
what another surprise that the "free" VC-backed centralized social network will also be forced to transition to being an advertising company
