Guess I’m chilling another day. The Spanish Flu didn’t originate in Spain, that’s just where one of the worst outbreaks was. That’s why I’m suggesting we refer to Covid-19 as the Italian Flu. Going to make a very bold prediction, but I feel it in my bones and I’ve been right before: we’re about to enter the Pax Mastodona. A extended period free of inter-community discourse. This will be looked back upon as the chilliest period in Fedi history. Every time some big poster leaves the Fedi in a huff people grumble about how it’s not the same without them anymore and then like 2 weeks later it goes back to being fun again. Me, a 5th century peasant living in a village upon the Danube, after seeing Atilla for the first time: [whispering to my friend] yknow I know he’s a bad guy and all but I’ve gotta say, more like Atilla the Hunk i'm five foot ten inches in height, but six feet tall where it matters (the fantasy world i will get isekai'd to when i die) paying $2200/m to live in a 1br apartment (lots of natural light, hardwood flooring, walking distance to public transportation) in your mind. Just because coronavirus won’t be the next Spanish Flu doesn’t mean it can’t cause a ton of deaths due to preventable failures in global public health infrastructure. It’s understandable to be worried about the significant number of people with immunocompromisation or comorbidity. There’s a difference between blatant fear-mongering and listening to actual epidemiologists, most of whom are genuinely concerned that #COVIDー19 could, or will, become a pandemic. Just because coronavirus won’t be the next Spanish Flu doesn’t mean it can’t kill a lot of people due to preventable failures in global public health infrastructure. It’s I understandable for people to be worried about the significant number of people with immunocompromisation or comorbidities. It’s annoying to see the same people who dunk on climate change deniers for ignoring climate scientists totally disregard a ton of infections disease specialists and go “lol it’s not that bad no reason to worry at all.” I doubt it’ll kill 500,000,000 people but it’s still not something to just ignore. @LuigiEsq I'm 27 and I got onto Snapchat when I was in high school. This has the same energy as new waves of Mastodon users assuming they're the first ones here
