Greetings #Fediverse members!

I've been joining a number of conversations about the recent growth on the Fediverse, and I keep hearing the term "users".

I'd like to remind everyone here that the community is made up of people, humans, members.

"Users" dehumanises, alienates, and allows for a particular brand of technospeak that smacks of addicted eyeballs and lost privacy.

I am a member of the community, not a user of software. Please try to reduce, ahem, using the word.

@jaz I totally get your point but, having worked in technical support, I see a user as a person who uses the system and those who use the system are the reason the system exists. Our primary concern is to support the person who uses the system and make sure that the system meets their needs. At least from my point of view, the term "user" is not demeaning; in fact, the term indicates a person of primary importance.

The specific tendency you point to is part of a far larger project whose function is to so infuse us with "essential individualism" that we have a hard time thinking of ourselves as parts of an ongoing, robust, richly-textured community.
This tamps down solidarity, makes it a flash-in-the-pan, which weakens the durability of any collective efforts at change.
"Economics" is one source of such atomizing conceptions of ourselves.

Quick update on the toot.wales server

Turns out it's nothing to do with Twitter, the server had a sudden drop in #Defaidodon content causing the fnergs to wibble-shift which will need drabsoft infernae to dust off the lag weevils.

Sorry for the technobabble, shorn story is we need more photos of #Sheep #SheepOfMastodon to feed the #Defaidodon hopper.

I know you can do this #WelshMastodon #MastodonGymreig

Church without Barriers

Okay, I am up to the challenge. I am a twitter evacuee, glad I did not contribute to breaking tลตt servers. Please accept my offering of sheep #Defaidodon content. Somewhere in Brecon Beacons. I think. Probably just before becoming suicidal and jumping infont of a car. (&walking off totally fine) #sheepofmastodon

It just occurred to me that across the 4,000 #Mastodon servers each with their #MastoAdmin plus their moderator teams... we have more content moderators tracking reports and complaints than Twitter does.

For the folks who keep asking about how we're going to scale, we're on it.

@jaz Good point but...you moderate one post or one person on Twitter and it's done and done. In Mastodon, the same person and same post has to be moderated again and again and again...

Paolo Vicini

@jaz thatโ€™s a good point. Only difference is that thereโ€™s no commonly agreed community guidelines for content moderation. I am not saying thatโ€™s a problem, just a difference. #mastodon

JB

@jaz so this platformโ€™s entire content moderation strategy is birdwatch?

You can find local Mastodon servers around the world using the "Mastodon Near Me" project at:

umap.openstreetmap.fr/en/map/m

Click on map icons to see more details about each entry.

You can add service providers at github.com/jazmichaelking/mast (DM me if I don't see it quickly enough)

Some people find this an easier way to choose their first server, share liberally.

@jaz Using geography to determine what instance to join may not be the best way to go, though. I think it's better to find an instance where "your tribe" is. In my case, queer leftist activists from all around the world!

HraTambuurimies

@jaz hello sir, is it possible to join in on two or more instances? I found Finnish one from your post and I wonder if I could join in it too?
