For better or worse, I'm starting to take it for granted now that my day will get more interesting the instant I check in on #mastodon

It's automatic that I'll meet someone fascinating or catch a great insight. For sure I'll see great photography and cool pics of funghi or otters or some part of the planet I wish I was visiting right there and then.

The world needs an information crossroads. It cannot be held in private hands (a la #birdshite). It cannot be run by algorithms. Each and every person in the #fediverse must be their own #algorithm.

If the news media and content creators want us to make ourselves available to them, they must demonstrate their value to us - rather than shove themselves down our throats (take it or leave it). Is the Fediverse a harder place to sell things? Yeah. Because you have to sell yourself one person at a time.

It really does level the playing field in significant ways.

And the best part remains - to this day, since joining Mastodon - I have never experienced the agita and anger with which I approached #twitter.

That place made me crazy. This place makes me smile. I'll take that every single day of every single week.

I mean this most sincerely:

I have always been grateful to Hebrew School for making me the atheist I am today.

Woodchaz

@Alan
The Southern Baptist church was enough for me. Btw have you seen Ari Shaffir's latest "Jew" on YouTube? He became an atheist in rabbinical school. His special was kind of a tribute to the culture however.

GATEKEEPER

@Alan
I've always thanked the Popes and the pervert priest .

The latest episode of my How NOT To Make A Movie Podcast just dropped.

in this one - "Castle of Horror" - we talk to Terry Castle, daughter of horror movie icon WILLIAM CASTLE. Castle wasn't just a film-maker, he was an impresario! He was miles ahead of the curve where film promotion was concerned. And - says his daughter Terry - he was a great dad and a very nice man on top of it all.

From Bela Lugosi to Orson Welles to Rosemary's Baby (Castle produced it). This episode covers a lot of interesting territory. Cos William Castle did.

Got my final COVID booster late Friday afternoon - the bivalent booster. Mostly uneventful. Sore left arm but otherwise smooth sailing. Got my flu shot a couple of weeks ago.

Gotta admit. I feel better being up to date with it all.

At long last Twitter kicked me out because my handle there included my #Mastodon handle. Took em weeks!

Now it's official.

So long, Twitter. Good fucking riddance to ya.

It's sad. But if you like it here maybe it's not much of a loss.

One of the best things about the #fediverse & #Mastodon is that they turn social media into sociable media.

That's what being your own algorithm means. No one is bombarding you with content you don't want in order to motivate you to emotions you didn't want to feel. If anyone's selling you shit, it's because you invited them in your door. They're a friend. And here in the fediverse, we boost our friends.

We're sociable. When we're respectful toward others, they're likely to be respectful toward us. It's like a giant ad for "Doing unto others" without all the religious mumbo jumbo.

#Elon can have #twitter. We The People are way happier creating and consuming content free of the algorithm.

In the horror world, Chelsea Rebecca is Queen of the Dead. Her Dead Meat podcast and Kill Count TV series on YouTube have 6 million subscribers!

In this episode of our How NOT To Make A Movie Podcast, Chelsea & Dad From The Crypt Jason Stein perform a post mortem that starts on our recent live table read for charity of Dead Easy and then heads off into a fascinating dive into #horror, #horromovies and life in general.

Another thing I've come to really love about the #fediverse & #mastodon - people can't really hide behind "other persona" here. If it's organically you? Yeah - you can be that person here. If it's an act for something else - everyone's personal algorithm will sniff you out.

The lack of an algorithm levels the playing field like nothing else. It forces everyone to be more open about who and what they really are. No algorithms to hide behind or use to bamboozle the rest of us.

Long live the #fediverse - social media has become sociable media - what it should have been from the start.

@Alan

I respectfully disagree on the algorithm point.

The lack of an algorithm is good early on, especially for discoverability and reach. Creators love that.

But.... it will get overwhelming at scale.

Selection and presentation algorithms aren't bad, per se. It's lack of transparency and use by central authorities to gaslight users that's bad.

Several algorithms ought be made. And no algorithm at all. Let users decide. Let them even script their own regex. (Filters)

Opinions?

I'm old enough to remember when people (aside from the long-timers) were taking their first tentative steps here in the #fediverse. As scary as #birdsite was becoming, it wasn't half as scary as figuring out #mastodon.

The question back then was "Have you tried Mastodon yet?"

These days, the question is "Why haven't you cancelled your #Twitter account yet?"

Soooooooooo much has changed in just a month.

Life without the algorithm is truly GLORIOUS!!!

My adult kids (both in their 20's) insisted that starting this year, we stop buying actual Christmas trees. They're both staunchly pro-environment. Gen Z, ya know. They're going to live in a different world than I did. They already think differently in profound ways. And they vote like it, too.

@Alan

It is pretty difficult to find a Christmas tree in Istanbul. My sister's Christmas tree is over 20 years old and when it isn't Christmas lives out on a deck overlooking the Bosporus.

If you put your living Christmas tree's gigantic pot on a sturdy cart it makes the whole getting the Christmas tree process much easier.

They just roll their tree into their townhouse from the deck and have at it with the decorations.

Jay of the Iceni

@Alan awesome kids, by the sound of it. You should be proud ā¤ļø

Ann

@Alan
Okay. I get it but what's next? TP? PT? [Yup, I've tried bamboo products & they failed.] Cardboard boxes? Furniture? Wine? Bourbon? Trees are grown for purposes that make our live's better. My friends have an Xmas tree farm. This is how they make their living for the year. Not everything should be made of plastic. Rant over.

Please join us Saturday, December 17 at Noon Pacific Time when we do a "Virtual Script Reading For Charity"!

The script: "Dead Easy" - the 2nd Tales From The Crypt feature that never happened (we were forced to make Bordello Of Blood instead). Long rumored - finally found!

The charity - The Motion Picture Home! They're a fantastic org that takes good care of film folk in need. Your donation receipt will be your ticket to the virtual table read.

I kinda like how much time I spend here on #mastodon smiling. Or laughing (in a nice way - not derisively). Or getting distracted by things I had no idea were as interesting as they are. I learn new, cool things every single time I sign on here.

Algorithms make the world boring. That, all by itself, is criminal.

Now that we're past Thanksgiving, we can finally ask the MOST important question of the holiday season: IS "Die Hard" a Christmas movie or isn't it?"

We have the definitive answer - with charts & graphs - and Die Hard's writer, the extraordinary Steve deSouza making the case: "Die Hard" is very much a Christmas movie.

Steve's a storyteller's storyteller - and he will prove unequivocally that "Die Hard" is more of a Christmas movie than "White Christmas".

It's the architecture of the #fediverse that makes it more appealing than any #birdsite-verse could be. Yes, it's flawed in its own ways, but no one person can ever own it. That alone makes the fediverse vastly superior.

Not all instances are "created equal". There are some interesting differences. This instance allows for toots longer than 100k characters. Another instance I'm on allows no more than 500 per toot.

Morning my friend. I have def noticed how much freedom I am having with my verbiage here. I still am thankful every day I chose this one.
Thought of you yesterday when I saw an old pic of a bong I crocheted for my friend. Had to show you šŸ˜‚
Iā€™m a dork. šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

Alexey Skobkin

@Alan
Yes.

Mastodon allows only 500 symbols by default and it's not even configurable.
To lift up this limit for us, our instance owner applied some changes to the Mastodon code.

Mastodon project is similar to Apple in it's "there is only way to do something" approach. But it isn't passing reality check in some cases.

For example we hadn't toot's editing for a long time. But after several years Eugene gave in and implemented it. I hope the next thing from "better late than never" would be boosting with a comment feature šŸ™‚
