@ariadne I feel like this is less so a problem of the domain and moreso a problem of the notation and browser's ability to communicate to the user what it's actually doing.
I think an interesting solution could be to introduce a new scheme, say "web" that restricts what syntax is accepted to a subset used commonly by sites on the web.

these laws always skew towards FUD. FUD about pedophiles. FUD about human trafficking. both of those concerns are to some degree legitimate, of course, and while pedophiles and human traffickers do benefit from end to end encryption, so does everyone else. they want you to forget that everyone benefits and focus on the criminal element instead.

look i’m with you on bluesky being bad. but there are lessons to be learned and postmortems to be had. and anyone claiming there isn’t is in denial. you all were told by me and others all the way back in the early days of ActivityPub that we needed to take the abuse and trust problems seriously.
To be clear, no, Mastodon gGmbH cannot just "be sold to a VC or an equity fund."
By the way, anyone claiming things get "sold to VCs" probably doesn't actually know what they are talking about. The venture market definitely does not work that way.
@ariadne I am currently writing Vocata, which does ActivityStreams right™ by strictly seeing the Fediverse as an RDF graph. It can use Neo4j as storage backend.
to be absolutely clear, i have added (and am adding more) features to my instance because my community asked for them.
we do not care about the tacit approval of communities outside our own. if you want to have real conversations, great, but if you just want to bark orders at us at the threat of defederation, you're better off just hitting that defederate button now, because we are entirely disinterested in playing with white bullies.
