I've decided to go with neither of the two app logo options I asked you to vote on in [1]

Y'all made several good points, and those two options will be available to use but I decided to go with an app icon that is simple and not similar to IG's icon as the default.

Thanks for all the feedback!

It's not an easy job as an open source developer, especially when your project grows to be so popular

We're human too, and sometimes we all can take for granted the bigger picture in how we treat each other.

Emotions make us human but so does compassion, humility, and learning how to admit your wrong.

I'm not saying to disregard them, but maybe collectively we can work towards a more humane and understanding federated future by encouraging a more open dialogue between devs and users

I still remember when I first joined Masto in 2016 (and the IRC chan)

I kept accidentally spelling it Mastadon and when I discovered the domain was available I rushed to private message Gargron and suggest he register it

Two years later, I rediscovered Mastodon and it was much bigger, and I'll never forget how supportive he was of @pixelfed from day 1 and to this day

mastodon.social/@Gargron/10130

He really made an impact on me and I'm still his and Mastodons biggest fan ❤️

I've said it countless times before, if you're working on an #activityPub project and would like more visibility, DM me!

I know how lucky I was, and how hard it is to get noticed now, we all started from nothing and I get that

People over profits is what makes the #fediverse so special ❤️

@dansup I've built fediseer (fediseer.com/) and explained what it is here: dbzer0.com/blog/overseer-a-fed

Could use some more people knowing about and integrating with it. I even built a python SDK for it github.com/db0/pythonseer

Would research, promotion, and/or public initiatives count?

@dansup Until the people own the infrastructure and the revenue from the platforms the people will always remain the product.

I don't even know if my toots are getting out and rarely visit Mastodon because I don't understand the interface.

If advertisers had the user SELECT adverts via OPT-IN parameters so they get adverts they NEED instead of what the advertiser is trying to sell it would be better. A second feature that would be great is if advertisers were to have their adverts rated and if they rating goes negative the advert is no longer shown to anyone. All of a sudden adverts would have CONTENT that people upvote and are prepared to see. Sort of like what YT does with their DIY videos except with adverts and the PEOPLE earn the advertising revenue.

I hope someone with the power to speak to the correct people sees this.

My view on Threads, IG and Meta joining the fediverse has evolved as I started to realize that the animosity between IG and @pixelfed may just be in my head.

My past actions of overly dramaticized posts about IG blocking our hashtag and the filter renaming thing were due to my own interpretation of intimidation, when really there could be technical/logical explanations that prove otherwise.

I will give them the benefit of the doubt, if not for me, for the fediverse, and Pixelfed users/admins.

@pixelfed Obviously everyone can make their own judgements, but I say this as the Pixelfed developer.

I will continue working on user-level blocks so users can opt to block threads if their admin doesn't!

Please don't use my opinion over your own judgement or your users, my job is to empower admins and users with tools to make the choice themselves!

Danie van der Merwe

@dansup @pixelfed I would not like to see instance owners just deciding on behalf of their users. Some users may want to connect with friends and family there, and others not. Each should be able to decide and exercise that choice - a bit like a democracy. If I don't follow any Threads accounts, how do they harm, my feed? What I post is public as we don't have walled pay-gardens, and I'm sure they can access it already if they wish.

@dansup @pixelfed in light of this, maybe ‘Login with Instagram’ merits another look? It makes the onboarding experience for IG converts considerably easier.

Like it's taken me years to get good at frontend dev, backend dev, project management, marketing, user support and also realizing how I can use my growing following to benefit other people and projects

And now it's all coming together and I couldn't be happier 😁

Building @pixelfed and everything else is a dream I've had for so many years and now I'm just in awe of the fact I'm actually doing this.

Never stop believing in yourself ❤️

Sneak peek at the upcoming blog post 👀

Gosh I'm having so much fun with this, I love marketing Pixelfed and spent years reading HN and it's wild that I'm now writing blog posts that I used to find so interesting (still do, but I rarely browse HN now)

@dansup I love all the good vibes you are spreading with your work. It takes its time, but things are growing steadily! If I had one question it would be: Why the IG references in the looks and UI? Of course there is no need to invent the wheel for everything, but diffenrent colour schemes for example would be simple one and it would bring more identity. Keep up the good work!

@dansup
Wow, it's tomorrow where you are! No wonder you're ahead of the curve. ;)

PCH🎙️ :wp_fedi: 🪬

@dansup This is great and what you're doing is going to help people embrace the Fediverse easier. I wonder if @Gargron is taking cues from this for Mastodon.

dansup

I had a blast with that last blog post, so I'm writing another one that will be up shortly 😎

dansup

Naive bayes isn't exactly exciting, I had to make it dramatic to make it interesting, this comment isn't wrong though!

HN comment from my latest pixelfed.blog post that says:

"TL;DR, without the dramatic narration:
Naive Bayes is an old spam filter that works on words independently from each other, ie not assuming any grammatical or semantical sense to what it processes.
It makes it simple, but efficient as a first line of defense against
"dumb keyword stuffing spam".
(No LLM used, if that ever means anything these days)."
dansup

I posted the blog post to HN, I wonder what they will think 😅

dansup

I had a lot of fun explaining Autospam, and how sometimes the "old, boring, resilient" methods and technology can endure the test of time and remain a good option 😎

Grey Goo

@dansup Yeah. this is shit:
madscientists.social/@greygoo/

- no way to appeal
- no reviews for a month

Very efficient way to piss users of. I left Twitter because of the algorithm, just to be met with a worse algorithm.

Dale Nash

@dansup how much spam do you catch with this? In numbers

Adam Katz :donor:

@dansup Bayesian anti-spam is an amazing tool. (Warning, I do this for a living.)

Paul Graham was the first to successfully implement it. Others had come first but didn't include metadata (email headers). His followup work, Better Bayesian Filtering, talks about optimizing tokenization, which is definitely worth a look even 20y later, especially since there's less metadata in Fediverse than in email. (CRM114, however, is sadly not worth a look imho.)

dansup

Wow, this Autospam blog post is turning out to be the longest yet and I'm really excited to release it!

Edit: it's live pixelfed.blog/p/2023/feature/a

dansup

Taking a lil coding break to write a pixelfed.blog post about our Autospam feature!

dansup

It's hard to find a good gradient I like that won't be compared to IG lol

@dansup What if you invert the white part of the logo with the gradient part? Like have the main background white/black but have the center circle contain the colours?

dansup

Working on a bug fix for the Account Migration feature, once this is out you will be able to move TO or FROM any supported server (Pixelfed, Mastodon, Firefish)

dansup

To all the people saying I should have made a poll, you can't add images to mastodon poll!

Jeroen Massar

@dansup post the images and then the poll in the next post referring to the previous post? ;)

dansup

Edit: Thanks, no need to like or share anymore! I've made my decision, see my newest post

@dansup @pixelfed black. The other looks like a poor ig ripoff.

@dansup @pixelfed

The right one looks generic so I prefer the black one.

Franke James

@dansup The black background is better reproducing in black and white— and for people with #disabilities like colour blindness.

25.6K photos imported to pixelfed.social since the wired article hit 🚀

Working on some import improvements (IG broken text encoding, webp and videos, mass delete processing imports)

Good Morning!

Def a surge in signups on pixelfed.social but overall pretty small as it seems the surge was spread across pixelfed.org/servers!

Now let’s get the @pixelfed app ready for the app stores 🚀
