A little-advertised bridge just appeared between the Fediverse and Twitter founder Dorsey's new social network. It intends to bridge accounts that don't opt out.

Doing this as opt out is a pretty immoral thing to do. Also unclear how legal opt-out bridges are in some countries. The bridge is using these domains:

snarfed.org
brid.gy

Server admins may want to defederate these to prevent their members being bridged without their knowledge or permission.

@homegrown @mastodonmigration That's cool. I vote to push a major version change to Dorsey's nose if the worm doesn't opt out right here in the next five minutes.

@homegrown @lisamelton @mastodonmigration From a legal standpoint, how does a bridge differ from any other Fediverse server, which are all already opt-out by default?

has completely cut off public access to posts. Twitter accounts are now unable to share anything with non-Twitter people. Direct links no longer work, which is a disaster for accounts distributing public information.

This is a textbook example of why you should have your own server as part of a federated social network. Ownership means your public links will never break, federation means you can reach a mass audience.

Mastodon admins and techy people, do you want to backfill missing posts that haven't federated to you yet?

There's a new tool for this called FediFetcher:

โžก๏ธ blog.thms.uk/fedifetcher

Bear in mind it's still very new and requires tech skills, read the github at github.com/nanos/FediFetcher

The script runs independently of your server, but needs an access token from each user that it backfills for.

Thanks to @nellie_m for highlighting this!

@homegrown If you're on managed hosting, you can (and probably should) use relays, the built-in tool for this!

Mastodon now has support for importing server-level blocklists. This allows admins to import ready-made blocklists instead of having to block hundreds of servers one at a time.

If you want a source of blocklists, you might want to try here:

โžก๏ธ writer.oliphant.social/oliphan

There are many different lists on that site, with the criteria for each explained in detail.

For instructions on how to import blocklists onto your server:

@homegrown Why the โ€œbare minimum listโ€ contains Udongein.xyz?

Itโ€™s a good instance with pretty strict rules and comfy community, that has only one reason it gets fediblocked - it doesnโ€™t block most other instances that are contained in such blocklists for actual reasons. Itโ€™s their moderation policy, and blocking them for that reason is childish and hurts fediverse without actually providing any benefit for moderation.

DO NOT reccommend automated block lists that donโ€™t least reasons for blocks and do โ€œblock that people or we will block youโ€ as โ€œminimalโ€ setup.

If you are creating your own server on here, don't use a domain name with the word "mastodon".

The word "mastodon" in relation to social networks is a registered trademark owned by Eugen Rochko's Mastodon gGmbH organisation.

If you use a domain name which includes the word "mastodon", you can be sued by Eugen's organisation if you don't comply with their terms:

joinmastodon.org/trademark

For example, this would potentially make it illegal to switch to software unapproved by Mastodon gGmbH.

@homegrown@social.growyourown.services Imagine naming something "mastodon.social" when it could be named something like "gaypirateassassins.club" โ€‹:blobCat_mlem:โ€‹

Fabio Manganiello

@homegrown What if I want to run an instance dedicated to the homonymous metal band, or to ancient extinct mammals, and therefore "Mastodon" doesn't hold any reference to the social network?

Sometimes I can see the argument for brand recognition, unless the brand name is a word in the English vocabulary. If you want brand name protection, then you should pick a name that isn't on the vocabulary. You can't own a vocabulary word and prevent people from using it.

You don't need to be a technical person to have your own server on here.

You can find links to managed hosting companies for many kinds of Fediverse servers (including Mastodon) here:

:Fediverse: growyourown.services/grow-your

Managed hosting means the company does all the installation, maintenance and upgrades on your behalf.

Am I missing any Fediverse managed hosting providers from this list? Do let me know if I am!

@homegrown What would you say are the biggest pros and cons to having your own instance?

Keith Ivey

@homegrown @jcrabapple Do you think the presumption that instances should by default federate with any new instances that show up will survive as the grows and has more spam (and worse)? I worry that running a small instance could become like running a small mail server, where it's difficult to get others to accept your messages.

@homegrown @feditips I'm using OpalStack.com for managed mastodon hosting

Hello to all the new people! ๐Ÿ‘‹

You can choose any Mastodon server to sign up on, but you can also make your own server if you want!

You don't need tech skills or deep pockets, you can get a managed hosting account for about 6 euros a month. (Managed hosting means the hosting company does all the tech stuff.)

If you want more info including a list of companies that offer this, have a look at:

Lots of new people, nice to see you ๐Ÿฅณ

If you haven't already, please check out the website at growyourown.services

The idea is to help people who aren't technical create their own online services through managed hosting, where the hosting company does the techy stuff behind the scenes.

Some particular highlights include a beginner's guide to starting your own Mastodon server:

GYOS is aimed at non-technical people, so it focuses on managed hosting.

If you're slightly techy though, I'd highly recommend these projects. They let you add services to your VPS or home server through simple graphical interfaces:

Yunohost at @yunohost, more info at yunohost.org

Libreserver run by @bob, more info at libreserver.org

FreedomBox at @freedomboxfndn, more info at freedombox.org
