Grow Your Own Services 🌱

You don't need to be a technical person to have your own server on here.

You can find links to managed hosting companies for many kinds of Fediverse servers (including Mastodon) here:

:Fediverse: growyourown.services/grow-your

Managed hosting means the company does all the installation, maintenance and upgrades on your behalf.

Am I missing any Fediverse managed hosting providers from this list? Do let me know if I am!

Security and moderation requirements are my biggest concerns.

@GreenFire

Indeed!

I've tried to cover this in an article about setting up your own Mastodon site:

growyourown.services/making-yo

If you start out as a single user server you can avoid most of the problems.

If you want to take it further, you could try inviting family or trusted friends onto the server.

Opening to the public would be biggest step and is totally optional, many servers never do this.

Thanks, I'll definitely consider it once (if) I manage to some other projects off my plate.

@homegrown What would you say are the biggest pros and cons to having your own instance?

Pros outlined here:
growyourown.services/why-growi

Cons are:

-The costs (though these are surprisingly low)
-The longer period of building up your network (though you can avoid this by moving your existing account to your server)
-The moderation (though if it's a single user server this isn't an issue)

If I am not mistaken, the global timeline is filled with posts from accounts that people on your instance follow.

This would also apply to the posts you see when you follow a hashtag, which are only the posts that appear in the global timeline.

With that said, my biggest concern with having a "personal instance" would be that you would be left with an uninspiring timeline, since all timelines are basically the same, or am I missing something?

Yeah, you are missing that you can also search and follow hashtags, which is a great why to follow things. And if you self host or have a small instance, you can subscribe to a relay to help populate your feeds.

@homegrown @jcrabapple Do you think the presumption that instances should by default federate with any new instances that show up will survive as the #Fediverse grows and has more spam (and worse)? I worry that running a small instance could become like running a small mail server, where it's difficult to get others to accept your messages.

Jcrabapple

@kcivey @homegrown@social.growyourown it's much easier with the power of relays!

@Keith Ivey Hopefully we will move to individuals being able to manage their own block lists. That way administrators can focus on banning spammers.

I think you will always have instances that ban anyone that thinks differently than they do, but because people can move to another hub/instance/server, or install their own, people have a choice in the matter.

I think in the end, most people will want to be on servers where they can control their own block lists, rather than being told what to see and not see.
