Left: the lettuce I painstakingly reared from seed indoors and then transplanted Right: the lettuce I bought as starts at the nursery Wondering if it's even worth trying to raise from seed next year... :sadboi: #gardening

@darius I'm sure you could get similar results by growing from seed if you had a good growlight and a germination/heating mat. (Other useful things: A gentle fan on a timer to keep the seedlings from getting leggy, and possibly something to keep the humidity a little elevated.) You might also try getting a mix of varieties and growing them all together and saving seed, letting them cross. Do some selection and pretty soon you'll have a grex that's adapted to your growing practices and local climate. :-) @darius this happened to our tomatoes too. The seeds grew like crap and died, the starters from the local supermarket absolutely blew them away. @darius think of it as succession planting. The bolted ones will soon be bitter, so pull them up so the seedlings get more light and you'll soon be harvesting them Babe are you okay? You've barely laughed at any of the social media posts I've made in this format Just saw this headline: "Salad Dressing Recalled in 26 States" Now imagining an article that is 26 interviews: "Ummm... yeah I remember salad dressing. That's the liquid you put on salad to lubricate and flavor the leaves, right?" - A man from Nevada etc etc Alternately it's interviews with one person in 26 different mental states. States of matter? Idk

@darius oh, sure. back in aught-nine is when i first tried the sesame-shiitake, and let me tell you, salad ain't been the same since. @darius I'm just enjoying the implication that the other 24 states have such lax food safety standards that they just let people eat poisoned salad dressing @darius Or as Paul from acting calls it, his "wetness" https://clickhole.com/an-oral-history-of-newman-s-own-salad-dressing-1825122827/

@t54r4n1 forgive the twitter link but this is extremely you-core https://twitter.com/Clipart1994bot/status/1558516516626235392/photo/1 was reminded about O.C.'s "Time's Up" and ughhh I love this song so much. My favorite opening to a rap song ever, maybe? > You lack the minerals and vitamins, irons and the niacin / fuck who did I offend, rappers sit back I'm bout to begin Also there's so much in this track that's been sampled on other songs, it's wild I still tear up a little when I think about this short story I read once. Specifically how the baby refused to wear its shoes and the parents had to sell the shoes to make the shoe money back 😢

Had a productive #gardening morning! Harvested the last of the snap peas, way more raspberries than expected, and started my snap pea seed saving process for next year. Did a ton of weeding too. Idea: enabling "quote tweets" in Hometown but only for accounts that are self-identified as bots (aka the Service actor in activitypub). That way you're by definition not using the feature to dogpile on a person. There are so many times I want to surface some cool bot content but with a little commentary or context. Note that this is just an idea, not a plan for Hometown. Curious to think what others think of it.

@darius so, if someone has to check that box to make the account a bot there could, in theory, be another box for “qt” and then users could opt in to quoted toots and then have a QT badge calling them cute @darius I mute a lot of bots. If someone boosts a bot that I have need, that respects my mute. If someone replies to a bot, that respected my mute. If someone posts a link to a bot post “quote tweet” style, that does not. Is there a reason to build a “quote tweet” style for bots rather than just use existing replies to bots? Still some fun ideas of how you could style Bot replies differently from non-Bot replies, but it doesn’t also serve to route around mutes/blocks.

@darius Seems to overlap in purpose with the semantic web proposed a few years later, which has never quite reached fruition. Well, in 1 of the past 10 ActivityPub meetings we did also talk about how to “Describe Potential Actions of Objects” natively in ActivityPub cause Evan and James already thought about it for AS … Please note the CFP for upcoming FediCamp https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/fedicamp-2022-call-for-proposals/2510 @darius it's not, I've only actually moved over my personal faves, but I have thought about adding it as well Came across this article that describes Persian grilled corn (balal) and what makes it uniquely delicious. In short, you shuck the corn, cook it directly on hot coals until almost blackened, then give it a bath in salt water for ten minutes or more. I grew up eating this stuff and make it at least once each summer. Attached is a video of me making it a few summers ago. @darius growing up my fave was the Indonesian style where the street vendors would baste it with sweet soy sauce and then grill very dark over charcoal. this looks great too! everyone in this country way undercooks their corn! @darius i'm intrigued but i don't think i'm capable of grilling corn without making elotes. i think it would happen automatically and i would only realize my mistake after eating all of the corn. street corn best corn Thanks, The Oregonian. What the fuck. These poor landlords required to keep track of "minutiae" such as... the date an application was submitted?? Sorry that you've chosen to run a business my dudes??

Just a little thing I noticed this morning -- the favicon on Google Calendar tabs always shows the day of the month. This morning I came back to my laptop and my calendar tab had been in some kind of sleep state so it read "30". I went and reloaded the page and interestingly, instead of going straight to "1", it went to "31" for half a second and then refreshed itself to "1". Which means there must be some code somewhere that says "increment the day by 1. then check to see if that's correct."

Ok I am on Cohost now. I expect to mostly lurk and test out features but if you wanna follow me there, I'm there!

I say this sincerely, and as someone who appreciates and develops open source software: one advantage to making your social media platform closed source is that it's not immediately overrun with people posting about free open source software. It honestly might be a better move to start closed source, grow your user base, and *then* make it open source so the FLOSS nerds you attract can't overwhelm the platform

@darius That’s funny but I don’t see it to work this way. @darius Funny but I just see a possible discord kind of situation where cohost devs are like "yeah we're nice" and year later they're.. well, not. The open source part gives me the guarantee that even if things go bad, someone else can try again.. If cohost pulls it through and make a good place, then good for them I suppose. I'll believe it when i see it. Been burned way too many times. |
