My journey with Konstantin Lopushansky’s work began with his post-apocalyptic trilogy. The first of these films, Dead Man’s Letters (1986), explores the aftermath of a nuclear apocalypse. This was followed by Visitor to a Museum (1989), which depicts an ecological catastrophe, and finally Russian Symphony (1994), which delves into the spiritual decay of the Soviet individual. Lopushansky’s later works also held my interest, but a special moment for me came when I recently discovered Through Black Glass (2019) — a film I had somehow overlooked for five years.

The film’s protagonist, Anastasia, is a young woman who has been blind since birth and lives in an orphanage at a convent. She is given a chance to regain her sight in a German clinic, but there is a condition: she must marry an unknown benefactor who has funded her operation. The plot feels archetypal, and I could predict the ending as early as twenty minutes into the movie. Yet, the beauty of the story lies in its simplicity; it’s what unfolds between the lines that holds the real depth.

Lopushansky’s films consistently explore the theme of spiritual decline against the backdrop of material apocalypse, weaving together elements of a final reckoning. Through Black Glass, however, offers a contrasting vision: it juxtaposes spiritual emptiness with material wealth, embodied by Russian business. Given the opportunity for spiritual healing, the characters instead choose a path of base desires and total destruction. The film mirrors contemporary Russian society — cold and unyielding, yet still harboring a faint hope for redemption.

@henry interesting post. I have been wanting to learn more about Russian cinema. I have watched three Aleksandr Ethanol films through MST3K .

I’m genuinely concerned about the sheer volume of AI-generated political content on Twitter. It’s already becoming challenging to distinguish between what’s real and what’s fabricated. How deep does this rabbit hole go, and where will it ultimately lead us? #AI #Politics #SocialMedia #TrustInMedia #DigitalAge

@henry A video of Donald Trump speaking with a serious expression. The background features two American flags. The video is posted on a social media platform with a caption about Trump's plan to eradicate the "deep state".

@henry A screenshot of a video on Twitter. The video shows Donald Trump speaking and the text on the screen says "who have unforgivably performed these procedures". The tweet is from Hazel Appleyard and says "Day 1. An end to gender affirming "care" in minors." The tweet has 1.8k retweets, 12.6k likes, and 2.5M views.

@henry it has serious negative effects in my opinion:

- It can make things worse by spreading inflammatory stuff everywhere
- It might make it hard for real grassroots political discussions to happen
- It could spread false information that looks like it’s coming from a trusted source
- It could make people less likely to trust any online political discussion, even if it’s real

Recently, I happily participated in the #StartupGarage bootcamp by #Drivhuset Stockholm at #InnovationStation #Flemingsberg, and I couldn't be more thrilled with these experiences and the amazing progress made by all participants! This bootcamp was designed to improve presentation skills – from the initial stages on paper to live performances in front of an audience. And let me tell you, it really works!

@henry A group of eight people are standing in a line holding certificates in front of a blue banner with the word "huset" on it. They are all smiling and looking at the camera. The banner is in front of a glass door with yellow circles on it.

Since January 2024, I have been on a completely carb-free diet. No baked goods, no sugar or sweet fruits. In my experience, the restrictions have had a positive impact on my overall health, as well as on fatigue, motivation, and cognitive abilities. In early November, I completed several important milestones in projects and decided to loosen my grip, allowing myself a small reward. Here comes my love for simple but very tasty carbohydrates! #carbfree #diet #health #motivation #cognition #rewards #projects

@henry If you're going to treat yourself, this is a great way to go! It's good to enjoy something scrumptious now and then--food is one of life's pleasures. Everything in moderation and all that. 👍

I've done the same low-carb thing the last couple of years for health reasons, and it's definitely had a positive impact. But there's always more work to do...

@henry i miss doing keto. i wish it was easier to do but so many things, especially here in the US, have carbs. but maybe (probably) i just don't have enough discipline

@henry Hmm, I've seen similar pictures before. Are those Brussel sprouts in hiding?

A new wave of spam attacks has flooded Mastodon. Previously, unwanted messages could be managed with content filters, but now the situation is much more complicated: spam posts now only contain images without text, making them harder to filter. If an effective solution is not found, we risk soon being drowned in a flood of spam in the fediverse.

@henry I hope you do not expect anyone to scan the QR code you posted, and if anyone still scans it I hope it doesn't redirect to a harmful website or whatnot...

Chris

@henry I'm going to risk my own instance getting defederated for writing the following.

Root cause of all fediverse spamruns is instance owners not knowing themselves. If you run an instance alone and allow for open registration??? Yeah... sorry you should not be allowed to do anything on the internet but browsing web pages.

Today I suspended an instance hosted on a Synology NAS. Just one example of many that just makes my jaw drop.

@henry I hate how seemingly strangely patterned the QR code is. This is unusual. Is there a way to learn what it encodes without executing anything?

We live in an amazing time—a Pakistani website specializing in publishing fake news created by AI to earn advertising revenue published an announcement of a non-existent Halloween parade in Dublin. The article was picked up by search algorithms and rose in Google's results. Journalists began spreading the news in their publications without even bothering to verify it. As a result, thousands of people came to the square, ready to participate in a parade that didn't exist. #FakeNews #AI #Media #Dublin #Halloween #Misinformation

@henry 🏆Kudos🙏 for showing how much of us humans have degenerated into brainless lemming-like #SNSfollowers - in the name of what? Convenience, efficiency, FOMO, laziness, ...?
Btw, like many others, I've no sympathy for those who's business revolves around #fakery whether #AIgenerated or not. Look no further than at the world's biggest fakers-in-chief #Trump & #Musk 👎💩

Grease the Subtle

@henry oh yeah, that looks about right. Need to change the starter in the car and process more firewood, but pizza and Minecraft with the kiddos sounds better 😂

Do you remember I recently went for a walk in the woods? Well, I brought back not only photos, but also this kind of "friend" who loves hugs and bites. It's a tick 🕷. I really hope it's healthy and won't infect me with encephalitis.

@henry get thee self to a doctor asap and get antibiotics, you don't want to play with lyme

timberwraith

@henry That looks a lot like a deer tick, the primary carrier of lyme disease. Granted, you're not in the united states but that's pretty much what our deer ticks look like.

I know a lot of people have mentioned this already but as a avid hiker who has encountered these nasty insects a fair amount and know what they look like, be careful.
