@craigmaloney All right but who put that blueberry where there was clearly supposed to be a grape? And the grape where there was supposed to be a tangerine?

Fully expecting Reddit to pull a Freenode and lock any subreddit that goes dark. Reddit is dead. What you're seeing is the flailing of a corpse.

@craigmaloney just a month ago, they had ~50 high level positions open. most of them staff engineers. strange things afoot over there

@craigmaloney is there a TL;DR on what happened? I only noticed some mentions of its CEO being "owned" over the last week.

Apparently there is a Pepper&Carrot game jam happening in June. More details here:

Apparently Amazon is removing support for its .mobi format and using epub instead and I can't dance on that grave hard enough.

Well, this is unexpected. Well done, No Starch Press.

Reminder that sites like github / Sourceforge, et al that don't ban countries that are on the USA's "no exports" lists face criminal penalties for continuing to service those countries. source: worked at Sourceforge when we had to ban certain countries. Trust me, it's not a decision I agreed with or thought was useful. But my feelings on it were irrelvant. If you want to change the system change the export laws related to open source projects and contributions outside of the USA.

At some point your Facebook account will go away. Whether that's from running afoul of one of their algorithms or because you delete it, or because the company and its servers disappear: your Facebook account will disappear at some point. It's up to you to determine how you handle that. Do you be proactive and make contacts with people on other platforms, or do you treat those connections as ephemeral. I can't make that choice for you. Both are completely valid. (cont)

Thing is you'll have to decide. It's not a question of "if". We saw today how folks reacted when Facebook went down for hours at a time. You got a glimpse of what that future will look like. It's now up to you on how you use this data. You've been given a gift; a gift of seeing how you react to Facebook being out of you life. The question is how you engage with that gift. Only you can decide that for yourself. Whatever you decide I hope it's the right choice for you.

@craigmaloney I like the Fediverse in that every aspect of it is essentially ephemeral. It accepts information, connections and even every instance as transient. Like the ship of Theseus: instances come and go, the network stays. Your presence on the network is as ephemeral as you want it to be, sure (you totally can help a failing server with, for example, funding), but from the get go you are prepared that it will eventually disappear.

If you're going to recommend folks get off of Discord you need to have an offramp that is as easy to migrate to as Discord is to onramp. Period. Saying "don't use this thing" and then expecting folks to navigate server installation, client set-up, and god-knows-what-else is the equivalent of telling folks to not use shoes and then have them walk up the side of a volcano: nobody will enjoy it, it will be painful, and why are shoes bad anyway? (Foreach offramp: provide onramp)

@craigmaloney I’m going to continue to use Discord as long as possible. My target audience aren’t programmers. The average person is more likely to use Discord than XMPP or Matrix and I can’t make Mastodon’s success dependent on the success of those technologies as it’s already an uphill battle. It doesn’t need any more hills. Same reason I’m staying on GitHub and so on.

https://www.protocol.com/bulletins/patreon-lays-off-36-employees Seeing the writing on the wall for Patreon. Apparently they laid off a lot of the folks that worked on their software, and took on a lot of debt from VCs. If you're a creator on Patreon I suggest you start looking into alternatives. Things are about to get really strained in the creator space.

Is it just me, or is there something unsettling about this album cover? I've wanted to pull it from my collection for a while now, not because of the musicianship, but just because the squick factor is really high.

Just a quick reminder that Free and Open Source Software isn't a competition among ourselves. We're fighting against those who would co-opt general purpose computing. It doesn't matter if you're on the BSD side or the Linux side, or if you believe that KDE is great or that GNOME is amazing (or prefer a tiling window manager). We're all on the same side. We're at our best when we link our arms together and say in a clear voice, you'll have to pass through all of us to overcome all of us.

That's not to say we wont bicker like siblings, or fuck up along the path. We're human and we'll make mistakes. But cutting each other down or sabotaging the others doesn't help us. It makes us foolish. I may not agree with certain licenses that try to make corporations accountable, but I'll be damned if I'm going to sabotage those efforts. For all I know they might work and it's me who lacks the vision to make them work. But I'll be damned if I let folks denigrate their ability to try. |
@craigmaloney Rest in peace! ❤️
