Camelops: extinct in nature, surviving in the engineering practice

Every time I visit this INFN area within Sapienza University in Rome I have to take a picture of this corner.

A corner of a corridor, with a polished reflecting floor and green walls, brown doors and blue and copper cable trays at the ceiling.

Lt. Trask sighed. Dennings was on sentry duty, which meant--

"Lieutenant! Reporting in: a huge flock of geese just passed overhead flying in a Y formation instead of a V." Dennings's voice crackled over the intercom.

"Private, you know you're only supposed to #alert me if you see something unusual."

"These geese were very unusual!"

"Let me rephrase: a threat. Only report threats."

"But sir, geese *are* threatening."

"Private!"

"OK sir, understood. Bigger threats."

@cstross wrt the French government, it had been foreseen for a while. The government is basically composed of the two smallest groups of the national assembly, and the two largest minorities are on the far right and on the left (which this center-right/right government likes to call far left).

@cstross Current state of the world feels like the Titanic situation, with the people in charge/power living in denial or causing the problem, and then suddenly it’s too later and we’re all going down with the ship.

Today I got the chance to ask our computer graphics professor a question that I asked myself quite some time ago: what the fuck is the color pink?

Like, the color right before infrared is red, the color right before ultraviolet is violet. And every other color is some wavelength between those two colors. EXCEPT FOR PINK!?

On a hue color wheel pink is between red and violet, so it's wavelength has to be somewhere around there, right??

Well, turns out pink is the color humans perceive when red and violet are mixed (duh), meaning the red and blue cones are stimulated. Since both cones respond to wavelengths on the opposite ends of the visible spectrum, there is no monochromatic wavelength that would trigger both, hence there is no wavelength that looks pink.

That's also the reason pink does not appear in a rainbow, because there white sunlight light, a mixture of (almost, hi Astro-fedi) all monochromatic wavelengths, is refracted based on wavelength, so no mixed colors occur in it.

CIE 1931 chromatic diagram. On the upper arc all monochromatic wavelengths from violet to red are plotted. In between, all mixtures of them can be seen.

For #BlackFriday I decided to send my students an e-mail about the **amazing** special offers of our University #library @unibibkoeln.

This was inspired by an e-mail I got this morning from a BA student who asked me whether there was any financial aid for students who needed to buy academic papers that are behind a #paywall.

#LibraryLove #libraries #OpenAccess

Dear students,

As today is Black Friday, I thought I would share with you what I believe is the best offer ever: You can read any pretty much any fiction or non-fiction book* or academic article that you like for just... 1.50€! What a bargain! 🉐 🤩

Sound too good to be true? Let me explain how it works. It's called an inter-library loan (ILL, Fernleihe in German) it allows you to easily order a book/article with your University library account: https://katalog.ub.uni-koeln.de/portal/info/fernleihe.html?l=de. And here's the best bit: this AMAZING offer is valid all year round, no need to wait for Black Friday ever again! 📚📚📚

* That would cost at least 15€ to buy new.

Also, please know that you should never ever pay more than 1.50€ for an academic article! 🙅 The University library will give you access to most articles when connected to the university network (either because you're at uni connected via eduroam or, if you're elsewhere, connected via a VPN). Find out how that works here: https://ub.uni-koeln.de/lernen-ausleihen/digitale-services/e-medien. If you encounter any technical issues, write to the e-mail addresses at the bottom of the page. The university librarians are very friendly people who answer queries quickly and are there to help you access the literature that you need for your studies! 🤗
If the University library does not have access to a specific academic journal, you have several options to access a paper from that journal:

1. Order the article via ILL for 1.50€ (it will usually be sent to you via e-mail).
2. Check if a pre- or post-print version of the paper is available in an open repository. The easiest way to do this is to use the Unpaywall browser extension. This is 100% legal.
3. Send a polite e-mail to the author(s) of the paper. Academics do not get any money from publishers when people pay to read their papers, therefore they are usually very happy to send you a copy of their paper via e-mail to anyone who is interested in reading their work. This is also legal as we are allowed to share our papers with interested individuals. However, we get a lot of e-mails so please don't do this before having tried the options above.
4. Some people use so-called shadow libraries. It is certainly illegal to upload copyrighted materials (such as most academic papers) on these platforms; however, whether or not it is illegal to read papers via these platforms is a legal grey area in Germany. I therefore do not recommend it, even though I personally occasionally use these shadow libraries myself when the above options fail.

If you found this useful, feel free to forward this information to a friend. Pretty much all libraries (not just university libraries) work with ILL.

Picked up this $8 book of mindfulness practices on a whim a few weeks ago and would highly recommend it for anyone dipping their toes into connecting back with their body with simple exercises. It's changed the way I eat, drive, and spend time with my kids for the better bookshop.org/p/books/mindfulne #Mindfulness

Twitter is a sign-in identity provider too... And revoking access at Twitter or deleting your account does not necessarily break that delegation token...
I trust their security team made this happen. But it's not intrinsic.

If you've ever "Logged in" to a website or app with Twitter, you created an account with a secret Twitter holds on its servers. You don't sign in with your Twitter account. You sign in with an OAUTH token Twitter owns.
