it’s fun to imagine every time biden says “folks” during this speech he’s actually saying “folx”

ko kāihe ahau 🫏 :verified:

@samhenrigold hang on, I think I had an app called folx installed at one point. A download manager for Linux? Maybe?

the biggest scam i’ve ever witnessed is the tricaster video utility at our high school. they always said it’s super expensive so don’t break it but it’s just a rack mounted, mid-tier dell tower from 2012. it ran windows 7 ffs. from what i can tell, the only valuable thing about it was the video switcher program.

Mike Beasley

@samhenrigold are used to operate one of these in college and that’s exactly what it is. I would bet that the software is outclassed by a lot of free stuff now.

the “important videos” youtube playlist being taken down is the modern day burning of the library of Alexandra

For those videos that are *really* important, there's youtube-dl

We need to talk about how bad disk utility has been neutered over the years. My external drive refused to format because it was scawwy NTFS. And disk utility just,,.. doesn't touch NTFS now. "Wiping volume data to prevent future accidental probing failed".

You know what i had to do to fix it? Break out my Snow Leopard iMac. That fucker will reformat anything with a pulse. NTFS, USB webcam, the current boot volume, it doesn't care. It's awesome

@samhenrigold What’s especially weird is the command line tools for all this still work fine. It’s just the GUI they broke.

Keir

@samhenrigold yup since the redesign, whatever they did with it, it’s far worse and I expect it won’t see any attention for another decade or so as is usually the way

Григорий Клюшников

In case you'll need to do it again, `sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/diskX` should do the trick to make the disk fully uninitialized. You don't even need to overwrite the whole thing, overwriting the partition table at the beginning is enough.

i started learning web dev in early 2021. not having to pay through the nose for squarespace is nice, but by far the best benefit is being able to discover the private APIs web apps use. i've learned so much building hacky little tools built on the weirdest shit. like a siri shortcut that tells me who this week's guests will be on a talk show. i had to find an endpoint used by the TV network's iPad streaming app. my point is i love undocumented APIs

Jacob Hobbie

@samhenrigold I’ve been webdevving longer, but never gained a skill for this. If something isn’t documented, it’s frustrating for me to find. Any tips on how you do it?

Emory Fierlinger

@samhenrigold been trying to get the endpoint for apple guest checkout shipment status, that’s been my final boss. Really wanna do a Siri shortcut that I can ask about the status of an apple order 😅

every morning, i wake up to the sounds of my idiot dog trying to nest on our hardwood floors. he has been doing this for years.

so this is it? samsung is just gonna keep increasing the number of megapixels in their camera until we all meet our demise? ight.

Sean

@samhenrigold i guess Samsung is just biding their time until under screen cameras, then that will be the next big thing.

if you’re in the NY area, the MoMA has a neat interactive design exhibit rn. lots of stuff there but my personal favorite was Susan Kare’s sketchbook on display:

Will Browar 👨🏻‍💻

@samhenrigold very cool! Do you know how long the exhibit is going on for?

Good afternoon. The shitty hand sanitizer spray in my jacket for the past month turns out to have been mouth spray.

i've been making more youtube videos as a creative outlet (youtube.com/@samhenrigold), i need help prioritizing a handful of ideas:

@samhenrigold Hey something you’d probably want to know. My Mastodon app cuts the poll option text short, and I thought long pressing on it would reveal the complete string but then I accidentally just voted but couldn’t unvote.

Sam Henri Gold

we’re planning some pretty cool updates to the first party mastodon app soon. follow along with the progress here, it’s hooked up to our internal linear projects: joinmastodon.org/roadmap

Sam Henri Gold

i’ve also seen some posts (made in good faith!) that still kinda bug me, talking about how we’re now competing with the likes of Ivory, Mona, Icecubes. I like all of those apps, I don’t think we’re competing at all. Mastodon.app is designed as the default experience for new users — a gentler on-ramp. We don’t have any incentive to force people into using our app. Use whichever app you like, that freedom is what makes this place so beautiful.

i had no idea you could drag the route line when doing walking directions on google maps. this is a game changer.

dude i don’t care about harry and meghan. the real drama is that two of my neighbors are getting into an email fight over an HOA proposal and neither one of them know they’ve been replying all this entire time.

Sam Henri Gold

we have a really old (1920s) neighborhood pool at the end of our street. 10 years ago, one of our neighbors had an engineer over to inspect it and deemed it was unsafe. he sat on it for 9 years, let his kids swim in it during the interim. he brings it up at an HOA meeting last year, “it might be time to replace it”. people are understandably like “why didn’t you share this earlier if it’s so unsafe? can you share the report?”. he cannot produce the report. the motion goes nowhere. (1/2)

Sam Henri Gold

(2/2) there was another meeting on Monday. a second neighbor sent the meeting notes in an email to everyone. one of the points was the first neighbor wanted to bring up replacing the pool before summer. a THIRD neighbor (freshly moved in) replied all, saying “we should remove the point about the pool. if (neighbor 1) thinks it’s SO unsafe, we would’ve done something about it earlier. at this point, i don’t believe he has a regard for anyone’s safety.” and people go fucking bonkers

Tim Bueno

@samhenrigold This is the type of inane drama I live for.
