we’re planning some pretty cool updates to the first party mastodon app soon. follow along with the progress here, it’s hooked up to our internal linear projects: joinmastodon.org/roadmap

i’ve also seen some posts (made in good faith!) that still kinda bug me, talking about how we’re now competing with the likes of Ivory, Mona, Icecubes. I like all of those apps, I don’t think we’re competing at all. Mastodon.app is designed as the default experience for new users — a gentler on-ramp. We don’t have any incentive to force people into using our app. Use whichever app you like, that freedom is what makes this place so beautiful.

one last thing: a slow change you’ll be seeing is a divergence in designs between the Android and iOS versions of the app. iOS app will look more iOS-y, Android app will be a model citizen of modern Material design. The new onboarding flows we’re rolling out are the first looks into that idea.

@samhenrigold can't wait to see how the android app progresses! If y'all ever want to chat Material or run into issues just shout 🙂

@samhenrigold I’m fascinated by where can take the onboarding experience, as it was a pretty big roadblock as recently as a few months ago. Thing is, I’ve already signed up, and likely won’t go out of my way to see the process. Posting or linking to screenshots to show off the new flows would be awesome, and would help other Mastodonians to guided others through the process

@samhenrigold I think its a net positive for platform growth, but “official" apps are a touchy subject.

@dk sorta, i'm at @lickability and lickability got hired to do design for the apps. but it's super rewarding to work on it each day :)
