The trailer for the new Avatar: The Last Airbender show looks decent, but even if the show turns out to be a faithful recreation of the original I'm not sure what for? The original is already perfect. It's still there. Why does it have to be recreated again?

@Gargron Because viewers will generally tolerate or enjoy the familiar, and the people who bankroll new shows are generally too cowardly to bet on new stories

@Gargron Honestly I want a fixed Kora one more. The original authors aren't working on it anymore from what I heard, I'm not sure what to think.

@Gargron Apart from the milking of an extremely well established show, there are two potential net positives I see:

- Similar to the One Piece live action that recently came out - it brought in a lot of new fans to the series. However, there is the argument that one piece has 1000+ chapters/episodes and a 10 episode live action makes it much easier to watch.

- I know a few people who haven't watched Avatar because it's a cartoon (which is a shame imo). They're more likely to watch it as a fantasy series.

@Gargron A lot of stuff these days, from movies to anime to video games, seems to just be re-hashing existing content. People are out of new ideas and they know this stuff will make money, so they're giving old content a new coat of paint because it's a quick and easy cash grab.

@Gargron It's silly, but animation is a non-starter for a lot of people. Live action will bring it to a wider audience 🤷‍♂️

Mazzle

@Gargron Same with real-life adaptations of Anime. Why do it if the original is still there and perfectly fine?

@Gargron media repetitive capitalism is a real thing. If they know it’s a sure thing they will rehash it over and over and over. We’ve been talking about this one a LOT in the entertainment sector lately. Why make another? The first (3) ones are sitting right there. lol.

@Gargron Yeah I feel like the original just came out yesterday

@Gargron Maybe it can make it possible for a new generation to discover the original show and appreciate it even more when comparing it to the series that introduced them to the story.

@Gargron Remember, it's a product. The decision to make a product is based on market analysis and the conclusion that making the product and getting it to market will generate a profit.

@Gargron I had this exact thought when watching the trailer. I’m wondering if it will possibly pull in an audience that is averse to animation or that initially passed on ATLA because it was marketed as a Nickelodeon kids cartoon.

Terci

@Gargron I agree, but unfortunately a lot of people are biased against animation and simply consider "cartoons" beneath them

@Gargron
We have to subsist entirely on reboots, reimaginings, and recreations because you (by which I mean Netflix et al.) don't have to pay the writers as much as for entirely new ideas.

@Gargron Honestly I usually disagree with this point of view. I think that while the original is fantastic, it's still there, anyone can watch it. Having a new version doesn't take that away, and it can make more/new audiences get into the story and many of them will end up watching the original too.

Obviously that's not the main purpose of this show recreation, and it could be a not-very-good money grab, but that doesn't take away from the original, and it might get more noticed.

@Gargron Movie execs are timid. They aren't willing to risk the production budget on an unknown quantity, so they remake something that is already popular. That will continue until people get sick of remakes.

phi1997

@Gargron
Disney live action remakes, meet Nickelodeon live action remakes

Chris Ferguson

@Gargron
I was thinking much the same. The best they could do is remake it in animation and have a Full Metal Alchemist vs Brotherhood situation where both are good, just different.... But that's the best possible outcome and would be very unlikely.

@Gargron All I want to know is, who is playing the Cabbage Merchant?

Majin Boowomp

@Gargron Personally, I think Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024) looks kinda boring when compared to the animated 2005 original series. It looks more accurate to the source material (including with the pronunciation of Aang’s name), but I hate the lighting in a lot of the night shots. For example, I always imagined the ice walls kinda glowing in the northern water tribe, but it’s super dark in the Netflix series.

Almond Smash

@Gargron I'll check it out, but I agree! Live action adaptations of cartoons are usually unnecessary.

foofy

@Gargron they made the blue people more blue

@Gargron
I'm not 100% sure, but I think the answer is "money".

Miguel Torrellas

@Gargron animation > live action because the amazingness of the fights will never be recreated irl, in the live action we'll have doubles hitting each other with the camera changing angles every 5 seconds to hide the fight articifiality, in animation they could shoot sick angles and wide views of the characters movement and hits

Marc Robinson :mastodon:

@Gargron Maybe Netflix wants to own the rights versus licensing them.

Ed Sanders

@Gargron
You’re right, but I’m going to watch anyway.

@Gargron As someone who came to #ATLA in the last year or so (and watched the entire show in less than a week) it was clear the show wasn't meant to be binged. It was written for an era when you might not catch every episode, or catch them out of order. Being remade for Netflix opens the possibility of telling the story in a tighter way.

Landon X. Jenkins

@Gargron Right? That's EXACTLY what I said before the trailer even came out. Not knocking the show, I'm just extremely uninterested...to me, ATLA but not animated = ATLA but less interesting 😂

Daan

@Gargron as many have already said, it’s a great way to bring the material to a new audience.

I also think people put the original show too much on a pedestal. The show being animated is not the only reason people might not be watching the original. Compared to “adult” animated shows like Arcane and Castlevania, Avatar is quite cartoonish.
I’ve recently finished season 2 which I really loved, but season 1 could’ve done without much of the slapstick humor aimed at kids IMHO
