@endali another win for re-logic :ablobcatheartsqueeze:โ:blobcataww:โ @endali I'm so glad the money I paid for Terraria this year is going toward this. Never played Terraria but I've never seen a better ad for a game before, it's going straight to the wishlist until I get more time to play games @endali supporting free software projects is nice, but it would be nicer to use it for their newer games as well.
@endali Very based ReLogic. Also first time I've heard of a XNA reimplementation, targets .NET 7 as well. @violetsix @endali it's really good too! I've used it to get some ofu earlier projects going again on modern platforms. Also helped port a lot of indie games to Linux natively by being a drop in :) @violetsix @endali MonoGame is another XNA compatible reimplementation (I think). I hadn't heard of FNA. I thought I remembered reading that Terreria started out with XNA. @raccoonformality @endali open source, cross-platform reimplimentation of Microsoft XNA @raccoonformality @endali An open-source reimplementation of the (now defunct) Microsoft XNA Framework (which was a quite amazing freeware engine/framework of the XBOX 360 era). @mode13h @raccoonformality @endali made my first ever game in XNA back in 2010. I quite liked it! @raccoonformality open-source C# framework for video games based on the discontinued microsoft XNA @endali Where did you find this? I checked their twitter but I can't see it there. @nitramiuz @endali Logged out version doesn't show any new posts for some reason, here's the post on Nitter: https://nitter.net/Terraria_Logic/status/1704227519027651016#m @endali Original source for this statement? It doesn't seem to appear on their Web site or their Twitter account. @endali Okay, found apparent source on the Terraria forums: https://forums.terraria.org/index.php?threads/re-logic-statement-regarding-unity-the-future.129041/ @endali $100k once and $1k p.m. is not that much in the grand scheme of things, but it'll certainly be a clear signal and may allow more devs to maintain these ful-time. Personally, I wished for a big studio to go: "Fuck #Unity we'll now donate the amount equal to the necessary #Unity license to @godotengine / @fna@mastodon.gamedev.place / @defold / ... instead! re-logic isn't that big a studio though, is it? and 100k *is* a lot of money, probably enough to cover a payroll of a couple of workers for a month. it'd also be hard to calculate the unity license fees (which is part of the problem) @endali This. THis is how you game industry. And it made me go buy Terraria too. Can't say no to a $12 game when it supports a good community player. @endali Now that's putting your money where your mouth is! I hope we see more games using Godot in the future! @endali Isn't Unreal Engine also Open Source? https://www.unrealengine.com/en-US/ue-on-github @endali I was reading this and was like weird I have never heard of FNA. Its developed by like one person and it looks like the 100k +12k per year is all going to Ethan Lee (https://github.com/sponsors/flibitijibibo) which seems like a huge amount. I wonder if there will be a big change in that project with that sort of cash all the sudden. @endali so I figured it out: Re-Logic are the developers of Terraria (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terraria) which is developed in Microsoft XNA that has recently been discontinued and FNA is an open source re-implementation of that engine! Makes sense that they would want to turbo charge the only FLOSS path to continue using the engine of their choice... @idbrii ah yeah I see that now. I hadnt heard of either before this thread so was curious why a studio would drop 100k on an random engine written by 1 person so thats why I had looked into it Okay so I've heard about Godot...a lot. Never heard of FNA, but the fact that this is being done is HUGE. Unity: We Are going to charge companies per download of a game made with our engine! Everyone: Get fucked. Re-Logic: We want you to get fucked so hard we are paying OTHER COMPANIES to fuck you over. @endali You can even get this game #DRMFree at https://gog.com if you care about those things. I'm currently working on a #nix derivation to get a better experience on #linux. @SrEstegosaurio @endali I donโt plan to ever play it again as Iโve beat it once, but I just bought another copy to support them. @endali 100k each AND a 1000$ a month sponsor? DAMN, talk about supporting the community As a #Terraria fan I always got the sense that Re-Logic was unusually awesome for a game company; this is just more proof of that. @endali truly amazing to see how unity has unilaterally got all of gaming unified against them now, it's fantastic @endali love the Terraria Devs. Eternally promising not to update terraria yet still delivering. I want to play it again @endali Feels a bit virtual signaly to me. It's a nice win for the projects but the prose is melodramatic. I think Unity will figure it out in time, they've already walked it back. This industry is infamously a powder keg on a short fuse. they walked it back, apologizing for "the confusion" instead of focusing on the breach of trust and asinine approach to licensing they presented which means they'll either be forced to abandon this idea completely or die (or at least hurt significantly, as they already are) on that hill, I think. we don't really owe large companies like these leniency and understanding - if this is truly a mistake (I doubt it) a decision this impactful should've been researched more @endali Lighting a candle and hoping for that moment when Google manages to piss off everyone in Maps and suddenly people start giving me money to keep contributing to OpenStreetMap. @endali Great move from Re-Logic here. Theyโre up there with Ghost Ship Games in my book as the type of dev team I wish more devs would aspire to be. @endali Awesome move. See @LouisIngenthron this is how you do it to keep the gamers by your side. @endali Not that I'm not super happy for Godot and FNA, but how do you even choose which projects to support when making such a move? There are countless other up and coming open source game engines who'd be equally deserving of such a windfall, and I don't know that I could ever feel good about choosing some over others... |
@endali EACH.
