Low Quality Facts

"The fediverse isn't profitable"

Actually, the fediverse is a great place for artists and creators to find support for work they are passionate about and pour their soul into. It's just not profitable for multi-million dollar corporations that want to fill the pockets of already far too wealthy execs.

Translation. Billionaires can't control it, therefore it's not profitable

Erika Hammerschmidt

@lowqualityfacts Nah you're fine, you're on the fediverse so nothing is required to be low-quality just to keep profits up!

@lowqualityfacts @Earthtoerika I know a few streamers who could write you a great, groveling "I'm sorry" speach

@lowqualityfacts I don't understand why everything has to be "profitable" anyway. We've made everything - art, hobbies, healthcare, education, humanity in general - a commodity, and that's part of why the world sucks so bad lately. I hate that the world only values things that make money. *steps poutingly off of soapbox*

@izzyamar

As a fiber artist, it took me about a decade to recognize that i can simply say "no" to a commission. I don't have to justify it AND (my favorite bit) I can make things for the joy of making. I don't even need to finish them if i don't feel like it. The act of making is enough. Frogging 16 hours of work can feel similarly exhilarating.

Melissa

@ms_o YES, THIS!!! Art can (and should) sometimes be completely for its own sake, or for the artists' enjoyment. I'm glad you were able to recognize it and set a boundary. <3

The idea of art having to be monetized nearly made me quit photography. I felt like my work was only valid if I was marketing and selling it, rather than just letting it be what it is - something I love.

Capitalism tries to suck the joy out of everything, dammit!

@izzyamar @lowqualityfacts as always: capitalism and rich people competing for high scores in wealth

@lowqualityfacts I find the word "profitable" difficult to understand... I am English, I can define it, it's just difficult to understand.
what I mean is "they" mean "financially profitable" but "profitable" can also be used like "environmentally profitable", " ethically/morally profitable", and so on... so, yeah, difficult to understand.

anyway, "the fediverse doesn't make billionaires richer" is basically what they mean, and my response that is "fuck off" 😁

@lowqualityfacts Profit is the least meaningful measure of success

@lowqualityfacts That's why multi-billion dollar corps better stay on dying corporate networks like twitter or develop a kind of social responsibility that fits real social media & could well lead to a beneficial coexistence of both.

@lowqualityfacts Anyone who even says “The fediverse isn’t profitable” as an argument to anything doesn’t belong in the fediverse.

toxtethogrady

@lowqualityfacts It certainly isn't profitable for Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk.

unktheunk

@lowqualityfacts false advertizing this is actually a high quality fact

@lowqualityfacts
Reminds me, I gotta get to work on some more creations & stick it to the corporate feudalists

@lowqualityfacts

It's like saying capitalism "brought people out of poverty" when they were living on a farm outside the market and now have to work in a factory

Magitism

@lowqualityfacts Maybe. I can’t trace a single sale of my book back here. But, then again, I can’t trace more than 3 back to Twitter. I suspect social media is only profitable for social media people.

Brett

@magitism @lowqualityfacts

This thread just popped up on my home feed, and I bought your book based solely on this post.

So now you can trace at least one sale to here.

@lowqualityfacts How morally bankrupt is our culture when the question of "is something valuable" has been boiled down and reduced to "how much money is it worth?"

Oscar Wilde put it best: "A fool is someone who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing." Capitalism has created a culture of foolishness.

Sean C.

@lowqualityfacts i knew Twitter would never be the same once it went public, but now that it has gone private again, it’s even worse.

i always thought twitter needed to be a nonprofit in order to truly be what it claimed it wanted to be — once upon a time.

@lowqualityfacts And, in any case, why should the question be whether or not it’s “profitable”? Can it not simply be “pleasant” or “humanising” or “productive of community”? To ask whether or not it’s profitable is to fall into the trap of capitalism that monetises and commoditises everything.

@lowqualityfacts HAH!!! I KNEW YOU WERE SLIPPING!!! THIS IS A LEGITIMATE HIGH QUALITY FACT!!!!!!!!!

@lowqualityfacts I am here, and I like the fediverse - and I also agree with most of these replies. I do also want to point out something basic: servers and bandwidth and electricity and tech support - are not free. A lot of regular people are/were employed by those evil corporations you are complaining about. Try to remember that they’re all not the billionaire owners, they’re just regular people. Who pays for all the costs of the fediverse as it grows beyond hobby scale?

the fediverse isn't profitable.

Yes, and that is a very important feature

xChaos

@moffintosh @lowqualityfacts Twitter wasn't profitable neither... most of the time...

Moffin'tosh

@xChaos @lowqualityfacts Fedi is a bit different though. Perhaps it could be said that it can be easily commodified: ie, it's hard to find a potential buisness model that could, even theoretically, extract profit from the fediverse (as a web of instances)

xChaos

@moffintosh popular accounts with lot followers can still add advertising posts into their timeline, but they would really only on voluntary followers to see them. The instance operator may ask such accounts to pay some fee.

If fediverse users don't like the content vs. advertising ratio of such account, they would simply unfollow.

Popular accounts may even just simply link to their sponsors from their profile. In fact it is not that much different from how advertising worked on FM radio, or so. It just cannot easily target users based on knowing their personal preferences, like centralised social media (but as fediverse ecosystem evolves, this may not be true any longer ... except for accounts who really hide everything and just consume)

@lowqualityfacts It's not profitable for artists who can't bring the followers they rely on to mastodon, because it's UX hostile and the largest instances are gatekept.

Zeke

@lowqualityfacts maybe the profit motive doesn't have to be the overriding consideration in every aspect of our lives?

Yup HIGH Quality, but needs saying and often.

@lowqualityfacts Speaking of which, 2 #fediverse members are posting new music right now. Here's one we posted a couple of days ago. I posted another on Monday night. Being productive. Never make a dime. Not a big name. Don't have a marketing agency. Don't have a war with some other publisher. Don't get invited to talk shows. Never won a Grammy.

Maybe you'd like it.

@lowqualityfacts I wish I could connect with more of these creative types. Don't seem to be many of them about.

@mkj @JustinMac84 Thanks a lot. More into the audio/sound/media side of things except as a consumer, but would never do any harm to become a better writer.

Stated another way,

"The fediverse isn't profitable"

"Then your definition of 'profit' is defective and unhealthy."

@lowqualityfacts but I don't care for profit, I care have a way to connect to people.

By the way, remember that I need to see if the person who care the server accept donations to maintain the instance I am registry.

@lowqualityfacts I’m so tired of “enriches the 1%” as the only metric that seems to matter…

@lowqualityfacts i feel like it just needs a feed based on likes. For now they don't do anything but I'd love to see my following/instance's most liked tweets in the last 24h. That would help small creators be pushed forward. Same with boosts!
