I saw someone argue that shitposters can't succeed on Mastodon because their posts won't go viral due to the lack of an algorithm.
As a counterpoint to their belief I would like to introduce exhibit A, whatever the hell this account is.

@lowqualityfacts as a shitposter vtuber i'm offended by whomever it was that said we can't go viral. *high-five* @lowqualityfacts@mstdn.social Allow me to say that this post is on brand. This is a low quality fact. Keep up the good work. @passenger @lowqualityfacts @lowqualityfacts I don't want to be shown your post because you're a popular pseudo celebrity that does dumb stuff to elicit clicks. I want to be shown your post because I like you and chose to follow you. @lowqualityfacts @lowqualityfacts I just had one of my toots do numbers for the first time, and honestly it's kind of a pain in the ass. I had to learn to clear my notifications. @pawsplay @lowqualityfacts honestly that's how internet clout works in any app tbh @lowqualityfacts@mstdn.social i believe my account is somewhat proof that shitposting does indeed succeed on the fediverse @lowqualityfacts your facts are less shit-posty and more finely-polished-turd-posty. There's an appreciable difference. π§ "If shit posters don't exist on mastodon where do all the shit posts come from?" @lowqualityfacts Algorithms artificially boost content. Fedi uses boosts to organically grow accounts and posts.
@lowqualityfacts That's cuz humor doesn't need an algorithm to force-feed itself to users! People will naturally follow stuff that's funny or interesting. I mean, counterpoint to your counterpoint: I follow you because you post stuff that is often legitimately funny and irreverent. When I think of "shitposting," I think of the assholes who jump in and "pretend" (or claim to be pretending) to be racists, misogynists or homophobes because they think it's funny making other folks upset. Likewise, the folks ostensibly on the left who bait right-wingers just to make them angry rather than to actually change things. Fun ain't shit. @lowqualityfacts I like to call these kind of posts as low quality posts, and expecting it to go places with some algorithm pushing it to the top. @lowqualityfacts shitposting is done for its own sake. The lack of quality repudiates the culture of professionalism and hustle. If a poster's goal is to go viral, then they aren't shitposting. @lowqualityfacts you won't go viral due to the lack of an algorithm. i wonβt go viral due to a lack of comedic value we are not the same @lowqualityfacts "shitposters can't succeed on Mastodon" *looks at timeline* sometimes i wish that was true! @lowqualityfacts mastodon is definitely better for shitposting than Threads. The average Shit poster would be banned in hours for telling a terf to suck their weenus or something Again, I smell the whiff ofβat leastβmiddling quality here. But in the spirit of Fedi camraderie, I'll overlook it. @lowqualityfacts Shitposters not going viral IS success. However, Low quality facts are gold. @lowqualityfacts Even here I've read posts that were rather aggressive and contained fake. These type of posts will increase as people f.ex. of the far-right use every possibility to extend their opinions. Thema booster by retooting will be very dangerous. @lowqualityfacts @lisamelton Shitposters (appealing to Neanderthal brain) not the same as Sarcasm (appealing to high level reasoning) Because of the audience (at least the people I see) shitposters go nowhere here but sarcasm can take off. Of course I could be totally wrong and just enjoying the superiority that comes from saying Iβm not a Neanderthal. π€·ββοΈ @lowqualityfacts explain how Stux's account is always on the popular timeline. Explain why that isn't 'viral'. Things CAN go viral here! @lowqualityfacts @lowqualityfacts those people forget how important low effort posts are to the ecosystem of any social media. "Low friction makes the ball roll" -Some science book @lowqualityfacts People seem to forget that algorithms aren't a prerequisite for virality. Things can go viral just fine with people sharing things and intentionally boosting stuff. It just means things go viral because actual people decided to make it go viral, not some algorithm pushing stuff it thinks should go viral. @lowqualityfacts I was really disappointed the other day to hear some of the political commentators I *really* like and admire coming out with the "Mastodon's too hard" line. They've all gone to Threads, by the looks of their Twatter feeds. @lowqualityfacts It's really funny how they use the phrase "town square"to mean " billions of people" @lowqualityfacts Wait, so they think βviralityβ can only be achieved artificially? That seems counter to the very definition. @lowqualityfacts You are clearly a genius salesman, and I now need you to market my new brand of Flux Capacitor. Don't suppose you might know anyone who owns a DeLorean? |
