"Fixing Twitter will be easier than finishing Wayland," said a spokesdroid

@davidgerard Heh, last year, I proposed he donate the whole mess to Wikipedia foundation, write off what he could, and walk away.

@davidgerard damn! wayland.social has already been registered!

Gilberto Ficara

@davidgerard tbh, Musk did most of the work toward "finishing" Twitter... 😂

Marc Jacobs

@davidgerard Funniest thing I’ve read all morning. (I’m in PDT, it’s 0710 here)

@davidgerard

Any mention of Wayland provokes thinking of Weyland-Yutani, and then Oligarchs wishing to live forever or some such.

Being stuck in the Musk Universe instead is a bit tedious.

Martin Gausby

@konstantin @davidgerard perhaps. But as far as I know, it is based on an outdated view of the stability and state of the Wayland project, and as such, it is massively unfair to the great people working on getting Wayland in a shape where it can replace X11—which for many cases it is.

David Gerard

@gausby @konstantin wayland, the pulseaudio of display management: it fixes all your video problems except ones you have

a pile of responses on twitter and bsky are frustrated multi-monitor users

@davidgerard @gausby @konstantin Wayland is basically 25% of a display protocol but when you point it out, you get a bunch of reply guys telling you that what you want is undesirable.

XOrg may be a poorly maintained dinosaur but at least it's a complete dinosaur instead of the blueprint of a mammal that omitted many crucial organs like the kidneys.
Mx Jookia

@davidgerard @gausby @konstantin Sometimes I wonder if people who defend Wayland have actually tried to use it?

Luna:babaw_is::babaw_cute: :trans_verify:

@jookia@social.tchncs.de @davidgerard@circumstances.run @gausby@mastodon.xyz @konstantin@social.headbright.eu I use it (specifically hyprland, or gnome before that), and I don't experience any of the issues people commonly bring up

Limitless_screaming

@jookia @davidgerard @gausby @konstantin

Not everyone uses your specific hardware, with your specific software installed. So not everyone experiences your issues.

ForeverAndaDay

@davidgerard hmm, I wasn't aware that Wayland was made by the same people that made X11, interesting if true.

David Gerard

@foreverandaday oh yeah - Høgsberg, Jackson, Stone, they'd just spent five years in the Xorg mines and they weren't happy

David Gerard

@foreverandaday X11 basically is on emergency life support only now. Red Hat was the last paying developer and they consider it utterly legacy except XWayland.

🆘Bill Cole 🇺🇦

@davidgerard @foreverandaday Not much of a marketer, are you?

X11R7.7 is STABLE. SOLID. DONE. COMPLETE.

ForeverAndaDay

@grumpybozo @davidgerard I don't think they were saying X11 is bad, just that it's old and that it's worth it for development teams to flesh out a newer standard so that it's ready to adopt by the time that user's needs differ to the point that the old system doesn't meet them anymore. There's a reason why a lot of distros use X11, just like there's reasons why users would prefer a switch to Wayland in the future.

@davidgerard Fixing Twitter will be easier than finishing Wayland

Nantucket E-Books

@davidgerard That must have been one heck of a fundraising drive for X Org.

David Gerard

@nantucketebooks oh elon didn't have to pay them very much at all

DarkRedman

@davidgerard Haha I think it's the contrary in fact. 😅

MyFairJulie

@davidgerard Will startx still launch the graphial interface for Linux or will it soon open a social media client?

UT3UMS 🇺🇦

@davidgerard tweets as framebuffer transport over Layer 7 OSI

David Gerard

@UT3UMS needs a few more round trips in the protocol before it's properly X
