Yo. Republicans are trying to sneak in a ban on transgender care nationwide. For kids and adults. And almost nobody is talking about it! erininthemorning.com/p/nationa

What the hell do we do? Time to get organized? Who's organizing:

- A national trans walkout. Everywhere, but especially in tech. We make all this shit run after all. Can we use that to lawmakers and even employers to speak out and take a stand?
- A national march on Washington DC
- Getting people to show up *in person* *tomorrow* who live in Washington DC. There's a hearing on it: rules.house.gov/bill/118/hr-43
- Local marches and rallies

Who's organizing if not us? And we are, collectively, more or less the biggest collection of trans folk in tech.

I'm terrible at this stuff, so not volunteering to *run* anything, but I'll cheerlead and point people at things if it helps.

There's some other bad things in there too. (In addition to several Green amendments blocking research or access to trans healthcare)

Green: "Revised Prohibits funding for the development of climate change or green energy initiatives."

Green: "Revised Prohibits assistance to the government of Ukraine."

Green: "Revised Prohibits funding for the development of plant and laboratory-based meat products."

Green: "Revised Prohibits funding for the development of any COVID-19 vaccine."

Jackson: "Late Prohibits the FDA Commissioner from purchasing electric vehicles."

Bost: "Prohibits the Secretary of Agriculture from purchasing electric vehicles."

Gah Marjorie Green is an attention hogging hate filled bag of toxic white supremacy.

Don't forget you can use house.gov/representatives/find

to find who your rep is to send them angry letters about this, or call and leave them a message.

If you're interested I remember a list of various queer organizations.

There's lambdalegal.org/ which is roughly the LGBTQ+ equivalent of the ACLU, and they're currently involved in a number of cases trying to block trans health care bans.

Longer term there's also a network of state level legislative advocacy groups. I'm in California so know about eqca.org/ but some searching turned up the national umbrella group equalityfederation.org/federat which includes links to all the various state level groups.

There's also a network of LGBT centers which frequently offer support groups and health care and may offer other services. In LA there's lalgbtcenter.org/ and the various centers umbrella group has a directory of local centers at lgbtqcenters.org/LGBTCenters/

Then there's been other industry level groups, like there's a group I remembered as "noglstep" which apparently rebranded as "Out to Innovate" which is a professional society and global community of LGBTQ+ students and professionals in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics."
oti.memberclicks.net/ which might be a useful for resource for us in various IT positions.

@alienghic @cwebber this right after Russia banning all trans care too? they banned HRT, surgeries...they even banned marriage for trans people.

this is just terrifying. it confirms to me that I need to be ready to leave the U.S. by 2024. this is what's coming if the republicans take power. I don't think it's happening right now with this bill, but holy fuck how do we mobilize against a republican party that's been taking over precincts at the local level all over the country?

article about Russia btw: nytimes.com/2023/07/24/world/e

Let's not ignore that most of these are also backed by Mrs. Miller of Illinois.
Some of her OTHER ideas;
141 Version 1 -Prohibits funds to implement the COVID–19 Workplace Safety Plan issued by the Department of Agriculture

56 Version 1 - Ensures none of the funds made available go towards implementing the recommendations in the 2023 Interim Report issued by the USDA Equity Commission.

@alienghic @cwebber
And the original bill itself is racist on its face: " SEC. 764. None of the funds appropriated or otherwise made available by this or any other Act may be used to implement" Biden's exec orders "advancing racial equity and support for underserved communities through the Federal Government" and "diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in the Federal workforce", or to "establish an Office of the Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer."

@cwebber I think people underestimate the influence that constituents contacting their members of Congress can have. It's unlikely to change the votes of Republicans, but it could influence what Democrats see as politically expedient.

Politicians expect that each constituent who contacts them represents a larger number of constituents who couldn't be bothered to contact them but will still vote. The more trouble someone takes to communicate, the more people they're seen to represent. A call represents more people than a boilerplate email. A physical letter represents even more people, and an in-person visitor represents many people. Conservative activists understand this dynamic well; it's one of the tools they use to hold onto minority rule.

Organizing group visits to congressional offices (whether in the states or in DC) could be an effective tactic to put pressure on Democratic politicians who are soft on trans rights. Enough constituents show up in person to a politician's office, and they start to look like a threat to their job that can't be ignored.

@cwebber I'm organizing to get trans people out of deep red states. I have helped over 24 internal refugees escape to safety and helped their fundraisers collectively raise over $100k

I realize that won't prevent this specific atrocity from happening, but it helps the broader cause of trans rights.

Consider donating to Kyle. He is trans, and he is trying to get his family and his trans daughter out of texas before his abusive ex tries to seize custody of her to stop her transition.

@cwebber I did not hear about this until today. Breaking Twitter has seriously broken so many news networks among us. It’s been absolutely intentional and malicious.

@cwebber an in-person showing tomorrow sounds like an excellent start. we do think a walkout is a great idea with a ton of potential, too.

@cwebber@octodon.social I should mention, QueerMed does not take federal funding, but even then, fight to prevent this ban from taking place! Not everyone can go through QueerMed

@cwebber@octodon.social Remember, if you live in the U.S., contact your representatives at +1 (202) 225-3121 and then your senators at +1 (202) 224-3121. You can leave Biden a message too of course to make sure he vetoes the bill. His number is at +1 (202) 456-1111.

Tell all of your representatives to vote out the anti-trans stuff from the house bill,
H.R.4638. Then tell both of your senators to vote out any anti-trans stuff from senate bill, S.2131. The anti-trans stuff for the house bill can be found on this page and the stuff for the senate may eventually be found on this page.

@cwebber How would this improve anything for anyone in the US? The ban, of course, not the protest.
