@rose for those of us who aren't as familiar with the terminology, is paying to view a "struck work" considered crossing a picket line? Or is the limitation on supporting it via buzz/influence/etc.?

@rose As a rule I would not want to post anyone that would induce someone to go to the theater, buy a DVD, use a subscription movie service, or wach a monetized youtube video of content covered by the strike and de facto boycott. A "this movie sucks, wish I hadn't wasted my money" review is another matter of course @SamUpstate @rose A union can face legal hassles with a boycott call, but we who are not members of the union are immune. Do not do anything that sends money to the film bosses. If you want to watch a movie, torrent it instead so they get nothing. @LukefromDC @rose well, I haven't actually seen a movie in theaters in more than a decade, so that's not a big ask for me. But I also won't illegally torrent a movie. That won't help the situation. I'd rather send the $20 I would have spent at the cinema to the WGA and read a book for a few hours instead. Or spend a few hours talking about the value of unions. |
@SamUpstate it depends. the union isn't calling on people to boycott movies at this time as far as I'm aware.
Movie promotion is usually paid work that actors do as a movie is released though, and I believe these guidelines are to make sure that social media influencers don't scab on that struck work.
Personally, I'm not even saying "don't post about them". I'm just suggesting we reflect on if we are doing that promotional work in place of the actors, and consider how we frame our online posting about them with that in mind.
