I'm excited for the next major release of Mastodon (4.2) that's coming soon. Half a year of UX improvements (that of course mastodon.social users are already benefiting from). More details to follow.

@Gargron Isn't 4.2 a minor release? ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Alexey Skobkin

@maybeanerd @Gargron
Depends on which versioning strategy you use ๐Ÿคท

maybeanerd

@skobkin @Gargron True.
I had assumed it's semver ๐Ÿค”

@maybeanerd @Gargron
Yeah. It's popular and very useful for developers.
But if may somewhat frighten the users.
Although Chrome and Firefox are not suffering much from that.

@Gargron
Is there any improvement or known issue about letting new user fill their profile BEFORE suggesting them to follow someone from the recommended list?

A lot of users are following recommended users and not getting followed back because of empty profile.

@Gargron

Why do mastodon.social users already have access to the features? Do they use it as a testing environment?

@Gargron I've got an ALT text issue, that long texts are covering the photos in the nativeapp on Windows. I hope this will be adressed.

Eugen Rochko

@Ruhrnalist We donโ€™t have a native app for Windows so youโ€™ll need to contact the developer

@Gargron Iโ€™m excited too! This app really brings me so much peace and I enjoy being on here to share my thoughts and feelings towards others who understand. Especially my adventures that I try to show everyone.

That's such good news! I am hoping that the new version will no longer place a series of small barriers in the way of entering alt text but make alt text at last the default when images are entered.

The current interface shows a bias against entering alt text because it requires that the user:

1. knows about alt text;
2. knows the required step to enter it; and
3. remembers to take that step.

It will be so much easier (and less biased) when entering alt text is the default.

@Gargron Any chance weโ€™ll see a web version capable of following my deviceโ€™s automatic light-dark settings?

Dogdroid :verified_gold:

@Gargron I haven't got around to update to 4.1.4 yet. That's awesome.

Ike Bottema

@Gargron will that include improvements to Android app?

Will

@Gargron I'm excited to see this finalized product!

Chief Ape @ 500.social

@Gargron Hopefully some exciting changes.

How current in the Roadmap you publish? Quoted Posts or Markdown -- both of which have been talked to death -- are still down as Planned or Exploring!

I'm looking at mastodon.social, which you have made your reference point for UX changes!

thks

@Gargron Will it fix inaccessibility of alt text in the web interface on touch devices? Can't tap "ALT" because it will open the image. (This is probably not an accessibility issue, I mean for vision impaired people, because they won't use the interface this way. I am not impaired, I just want to see the alt text sometimes.)

@Gargron
I wish they get rid of the ugly text area on the right(desktop version :firedoge: ), I do really hate it.
move the posts(tweet) to the right instead.
and also one thing bother me the most no comment icon,
I wish they add one when you click it -> show the comment,
instead click on the post

@Gargron Looks like I joined at just the right time when formatting is getting added ๐Ÿคฉ

@Gargron Looking forward the the release that comes after Mastodon 4.2, which will explain the question that Mastodon 4.2 answers.

@Gargron is that possible when user login they can just use account name or user name, not only email? This for security and privacy reason as well, thank you
