@pixelfed
If I understand correctly, you don't really login with Mastodon.
You create a new Pixelfed account which imports information from you Mastodon account ?

Powersource

@Zekovski @pixelfed yeah this is confusing. Why is it "log in with" but also asks to create a new password?

Connel

@powersource @Zekovski @pixelfed

Yeah this is a UX nightmare imo. You're not signing in, you're registering. This tries to help onboarding but I can see it making it worse for non technical people.

I think a better approach would be to have a "import profile information from Mastodon" button during the registration flow, I think that describes better what's happening.

Powersource

@connelhooley @Zekovski @pixelfed yeah I know from experience that in a situation like this (offered login but it's registration), I feel tricked, and like the app just wants to use me. Not a great start.

Jon

@pixelfed if you sign in with mastodon what is your username? You say "read-only" scopeโ€ฆ so when I post photos after signing in with mastodon I am posting photos to a different fediverse account and not my mastodon account?

allo

@scrwd I think it's just OAuth. When you authorize Pixelfed to use your Mastodon-Account, pixelfed also knows that you're the owner of that account. Basically the same as Login with Twitter and Login with Facebook works.

@pixelfed I think the access rights can still be reduced. It is not directly obvious from the developer section of Mastodon, but you can still request fewer rights than read-only access with the right Parameters for the auth page, when you don't need them for more than login.

Deuchnord

@scrwd yes, exactly. Think it like if you were using your Twitter account to log in to your Instagram account: you will then post to your Instagram account, not your Twitter one.

@pixelfed

Jon

@Deuchnord @pixelfed I'm not really sure I understand what the benefits are of this. Thanks tho :)

Swamptin

@scrwd
It really just saves you having to manage another set of login details and by the looks of it automatically populates your new pixelfed account with some details.

If you end up only having to use one set of login details for the entirety of the fediverse then it's a potential reduction in confusion as new users try out different services. That's my understanding of the benefits of OAuth in this context anyway.
Edit: it just reduces password reuse by design.

@swamptin @Deuchnord @pixelfed this is definitely a good thing - I often use "sign in withโ€ฆ" services to save time and having to think of passwords. I think my initial disappointment was that this wasn't a truly universal fediverse account for both Mastodon and Pixelfed.

My dreamy ideal is one protocol and one account and depending on the types of content I post different apps surface different things from my single "stream". Not even sure if the ActivityPub protocol supports this.

Swamptin

@scrwd
I may have misread what this design is, but that's my reading of it.

Yeah, that would be a great solution if it is supported. But hey, I'll take a single app to access each of these accounts at least which it seems like fedilab does fairly well.

@pixelfed Once this is merged, the feature will be available to all instances!

@dansup @pixelfed I signed up today with the Sign-In with Mastodon feature. I followed my Mastodon followers, but decided against it but when I go to unfollow them on Pixelfed and refresh my browser, I'm still showing as following them. Bug?

@pixelfed wait so you can sign up to a server with your mastodon account

@chizeck @pixelfed I'm using it already and even with this i'd still opt for using a separate account / password / 2FA because that's just best practice if security is your deal in life.

But i think this will help a ton of folks discover Pixelfed, make onboarding easier and as a photographer who uses it and a enjoys it, i think that's a great thing.

Patrick Chizeck

@Anya_Adora

Hmmm yeah, that's a good point. I'm mostly 2FA on everything.

As an aside, as I was looking through Pixelfed I do wish the discover function would blur NSFW stuff. I'm all for people showing off their parts to consenting others, but it was a little early in the morning to see so much dick @pixelfed

@chizeck @pixelfed Hmmm, interesting. I've been using Pixelfed for a little over a month and a half now but i am entirely desktop.

There should be a setting somewhere to not see NSFW content. Thus far i only had one instance where someone who uses Pixelfed to post porn (from various sites) followed me and i was not interested in connecting because of it.

Patrick Chizeck

@Anya_Adora

I'm currently using their Android app because I'm too lazy to get up and go to my desk-- I'm sure there probably is. I hope there is, at least!

@pixelfed

@chizeck @pixelfed Understandable and tbh i think Pixelfed is likely going to find a much larger userbase with mobile users than DSLR shooting folks like myself.

All my uploads are done desktop because aside from preferring it, they weren't shot on a mobile device and this forces me to take extra steps, especially given i only shoot RAW format and then post process them.

Patrick Chizeck

@Anya_Adora

As Instagram gets more and more cluttered with ads, I think we will see more folks migrating over. It's.kind of maddening over there, let alone the privacy issues.

@chizeck @pixelfed It's definitely a great alternative and i think you're right about that.

The other part is the algorithm there. I used to use IG and despite having a bunch of followers, when they changed things to a point where you didn't see as much content from those you follow, it was noticeable.

I had to go to other photographer's profiles and check in to see posts, they did the same with me.

That was something that to me makes it a poor choice for photography and little more than a network of ads, spam, misc. random posts of everything but what i and many others wanted to see.

Problem is, a lot of photographers especially though still feel like they have to use IG as part of their overall portfolio online. I think Pixelfed is a better choice and the amount of interaction, fav's, boosts on my posts there the past month and a half prove that to me in comparison to IG where i had several times more followers than i do on Pixelfed now.

@Anya_Adora @chizeck @pixelfed I agree that it is a great alternative. But I just donโ€™t know how to convince people on IG and threads to try pixelfed and the Fediverse instead.

Anya Adora :verified_trans:โ€‹ :donor:

@saja0486 @chizeck @pixelfed Tbh i think all one can do is tell someone about an alternative and the benefits of it and drawbacks and be real about it. If that seems like something worth trying / checking out then perhaps it will happen.

But some people really don't want to change much of anything in life. Social media platform choices are just one example of that. There's a certain sense of comfort even in things that are uncomfortable simply because they are known already.

Michael / ใƒžใ‚คใ‚ฑใƒซ replied to Anya Adora :verified_trans:โ€‹ :donor:

@Anya_Adora @chizeck @pixelfed valid points. I know that a lot of people still havenโ€™t heard of Pixelfed or know what it is yet. But I hope more people discover it and learn about how awesome it is.

Running on fumes

@pixelfed Iโ€™m more concerned with the fact if I take a photo and post it on #pixelfed it wonโ€™t save to my device. Why is that?

DasTausW

@pixelfed Why do I need to set a new password when I login via Mastodon?

Steve ( He / Him ) ๐Ÿด ๐Ÿฆ‡

@pixelfed Am I correct that we need to create a new username and password as it seems in the video? I was hoping to just use my mastodon account as a second @pixelfed login

Thor

@pixelfed this is the future of the internet!

canโ€™t wait to try it, when itโ€™s ready.

Interesting question: what happens if I move to another mastodon instance?
