@jerry This type of activity is unfortunitally expected as Mastodon gains more wider appeal.

New users are interfacing for the first time with niche communities that were historically insulated.

In the end it should be good, people can see that the denezins of these communities are regular people and not a threat to the greater whole.

As long as everyone plays nice, does not force their views on others, and live and let live, we will all get along.

This is exactly what happened to me. Before getting on mastodon, I had a generally negative view of furries, which was purely based on ignorance.

When I was a kid, I had a narrow view of "normal." Now I usually put "normal" in quotation marks because what is normal, really?

@geobeck @mikefordays @jerry This reminds me of the early days of the internet. Separate communities existed and sometimes leak out and new people are introduced to concepts or ideas they may not have previously held, especially on a world wide scale. Global societal norms are not universal.

IMO Corporate Social Media (Facebook, et al) has become an echo chamber. This is done to boost or retain engagement but it limits the ability of new concepts to enter the discussion.

When people migrate to the fediverse they are now provided the opportunity to experience new concepts and ideas that the corporate world may not entertain.

This does not mean that you have to agree with every new idea you encounter, but knowing that regular people may have different ideas may increase empathy to their lives and experiences.

Generally people agree more then they differ, and if everyone can find that common ground we can move forward as a healthy community.

"Normal" is kind of like "average", pretty much. I think.

A movie villain once said, "Normal is what everyone else is and you're not," meaning that everyone feels isolated because they don't think they're completely normal.

If Malcolm McDowell's sinister character said that to me, I'd say "Why, thank you. I think you're pretty weird too!"
