@osc @Mastodon The intention is that Threads will not initially be available in the EU, but is available now outside the EU, and it is also not participating in the fediverse at this time, but will at some time in the future

@jerry @Mastodon Probably, but it would help if the sentence is clarified

Karrbs

@osc @jerry @Mastodon why would it need clarification it is very straightforward and seeing as the US already has/had access and there isn't any federation I don't think it needs to be adjusted.

bugbear

@karrbs @osc @jerry @Mastodon because "it won't be available" can be read as "they are planning to make it available, but it's not for now" or "they will never provide the service in the EU" as explained above

Karrbs

@bugbear
Even if they are planning on making it available could even mean that it will never be available for eu especially if threads doesn't work out the way they are wanting. Only meta/Instagram knows the answer for sure 🤣

bugbear

@karrbs that's why people want clarification, I don't know what's so funny and confusing about it.

Karrbs

@bugbear what's funny is asking someone to rewrite or clarify on something they do not know the exact answer to and can only put what they know. Not hard feeling towards you or op comment just confused as to why it would be asked here.

bugbear

@karrbs The article could literally say "Threads is not currently available in EU." they could also add "There hasn't been any announcement when or if Meta plans to make Threads available in the EU"

Or they could communicate in any other clear way. I don't understand what's so confusing to you.

@jerry did they say why it won't participate in the fediverse at launch ? I thought that was their main focus 🤔

Jerry Bell :verified_paw: :donor: :verified_dragon: :rebelverified:

@lonus no, but that is the same story I’ve been hearing for a while. Guessing they want to get their userbase situated before opening the flood gates

BeAware :fediverse:

@jerry @lonus maybe I'm cynical, but I think they saw the backlash and decided to wait till they can do it quietly.

supernovae

@BeAware @jerry @lonus It was always "activitypub will come in the following months after launch"

BeAware :fediverse:

@supernovae @jerry @lonus I'd love to be wrong, but I didn't see this anywhere. Everything I've seen told me that #Threads would support ActivityPub. Even the sign up process has #fediverse in it. That tells me that hat this was an early launch and not ready. If #Twitter hadn't imploded, this app would have dropped in a few months with #activitypub in tow.

supernovae

@BeAware @jerry @lonus

This is exactly why I made an effort to contact Meta.

There was no way in hell I was going to sit around and wonder if my world would blow up if they launched. That just isn't sane to wait and see when I owe it to my users and the community to be prepared for what I can prepare for.

I knew it was always a delayed launch for activitypub federation on threads and so did the media publications from the verge and other blogs.

BeAware :fediverse:

@supernovae ah, so you knew (before this week) that the app was launching sooner rather than later? Interesting. Source? You're saying words with no receipts.

#Threads #fediverse #mastodon #meta #instagram #facebook

supernovae

@BeAware

And this is why discovery is such a disaster here ;)

(i'm being snarky because my talking to meta got me death threats and defederated and front page on almost every instance)

I blogged about the side story here and what we talked about on blog.universeodon.com

BeAware :fediverse: replied to supernovae

@supernovae hug of death? Site inaccessible. Will bookmark. Thanks for the link.

supernovae replied to BeAware

@BeAware yeah, i think write.as is under load from lots of activity going on - hopefully, the page will load for you in a few mins.

I tend to blog a lot about our stuff - which i need to go update the people search blog here once their servers catch up.

BeAware :fediverse: replied to supernovae

@supernovae I did read it. At least the most recent one. What I was expecting was actual quotes from something saying "Threads will launch soon without federation and activitypub will be added later". That was the receipts I was looking for, not that you actually talked to meta. That, I believed.

My concern from your blog, however, is the trust you give #Meta. Their track record shows that the positive discussion you've had with them are just fluff to quell concerns. 🤷🏻‍♂️

BeAware :fediverse: replied to BeAware

@supernovae furthermore, it's concerning that people who control so many peoples data, trust the people who have exploited that data for years. And that's what you're wrong for, and should apologize to your users for taking their data security so lightly. #fediverse #madtodon #Meta #Threads

We just didn’t have time. It requires a bunch more work. Think about everything we have to do. Like, if you’re building safety classifiers, you need to be able to run those classifiers on datasets that aren’t our typical datasets, right? If you’re following accounts on other servers in the Threads app, how do we classify that content? There’s a bunch of engineering work there. How do reporting flows work? How does strikes with accounts work? How does ranking work?

@lonus @jerry "not ready yet" is what I heard.
That's probably true - I get the impression they've launched earlier than intended to ride on the current fuck-up going on at Twitter.
