@dansup you mean the mistake was sharing the info or deleting the post?

I read it as "deleting the post", but I want to be certain I understand correctly, :blobcatcoffee:

@rysiek @edendestroyer @ariadne Deleting the post was a mistake! I should have kept it up.

@jdp23 @dansup @edendestroyer @rysiek i am still waiting for an answer as to how working with Meta could possibly be good for fedi.

Jon

@ariadne It's the incorrect answers you'd expect:

0) It means ActivityPub will win over ATProto!

1) it'll grow the network!

2) People using Meta will have an onramp to fedi!

3) Meta will make a lot of money, so instance admins will be able to make a living!

4) It's totally different from XMPP because!

5) We should take a "trust but verify" approach, and can always turn them off if they do bad things!

6) they can already scrape all our data anyhow!

etc.

@jdp23 @ariadne @dansup @edendestroyer @rysiek that sad part is that you鈥檙e both right, and probably not nearly as pessimistic as is justified.

@dr_a well, @darius has a specific take on this that I don't agree with, but it's something to consider:

@dr_a Meta's horrible and they'll corrupt anybody who works with them but I'm actually optimistic about the overall effect on the fediverse.

If you look at the fault lines between who's cozying up to Meta and who isn't, a schism between the two factions could be a big plus in a lot of ways. And with luck the whole situation will put a lot more emphasis on consent -- which could align well with new AcitivtyPub server implementations.

0. Is there a need for a winner?
1. Network is growing already. It's needed faster? What is enough?
2. This is strange argument. Like that Meta will be happy to let people go to not controlled monetized waters?
3. How Meta make money on Fediverse and why you think they will like to share fairly with admins? Will it create oligarchy?
4.
5. Trust Meta? Verify.. how? And how you will stop them?

6. Maybe but they can't legally use it, at least in EU.

Sorry for too many ??
P.S. do you know that many people are in Fediverse because that don't want use Meta in any way. Why is this good for them? Can't this lead to opposite...to the exodus of users?

Jon replied to Keev

@Keev I'm in total agreement with you, I think those are all horrible answers, I'm just saying those are the ones I've heard.

@ariadne

I am too

Or, more correctly, I'm waiting for someone to explain how they really think the #Meta / #Mastodon / #Fedivese highway is going to be wide open, four lanes in each direction, with no toll booths going either way

#Zuckerberg is going to allow people *out* of Mastodon and into his Meta, for sure

Does anyone really believe it'll be wide-open travel in the opposite direction? Out of Meta and free into the Fediverse, with no strings?
