I think it would be amusing if Reddit did implode over this. It'd be entirely self-inflicted... The site is only usable with third party apps.

@Gargron spez is trying to run the site into the ground by shoving his head up his ass and not listening to his users. @Gargron gonna take a nihilistic side on this whole thing so if it actually does die I’ll be surprised @Gargron one of Fediverse's strengths: so many apps work with it and most have so much customizability that there's one for everyone. @Gargron I've seen several people defend this with "old.reddit.com is still good!" ... Yes, and I'm sure it's days are numbered as well, I'll be leaving when they shut that off, Reddit has been making everything worse for a while now. @Gargron Unfortunately, they are chasing short-term gains and the almighty dollar, the way only corporations do. Good riddance! @Gargron I mean... really? Am I the only person in the world that thinks Reddit's default web app is fine? :/ @Gargron I think it’s most likely gonna end up just causing old time users to migrate and they’ll have to pivot to a new target demographic or something. I mentioned this situation in a few recent videos and I’ve gotten a loooot of comments from people who aren’t even aware of the concept of a 3rd party app. Then, their first instinct is to defend the company’s “right” to only have the proprietary app. @Gargron I decided to delete my account after everything. Been using Sync for a long time and don't see a point in continuing without it. @Gargron to me, reddit WAS the Sync app. I hated the redesign on desktop and stuck to old.reddit.com but I feel they'll be killing that off soon enough as well. Time for me to say goodbye. I haven't been back to reddit in over a week. I'm just sad that all the 3rd party apps and other innovation has to suffer. @Gargron while I do think it’s a ridiculously shitty move driven by VC decisions and execs who are totally out of the loop… I only used the iOS app and website and it was *fine* for the newer Reddit experience. The caveat is that I consistently miss the old school Reddit experience with Reddit Enhancement Suite. I just ended up resigning to the fact that Reddit were moving further and further away from the Reddit I liked, so went 1st party. I’ve blocked reddit now tho. @Gargron I find the old interface + no ads through a subscription to be fantastic. But we all know they’ve been trying to kill that. The new interface and the official app are abysmal. I just visit Reddit to read some Linux news. I had an account once. I rapidly realize how toxic it can be. @Gargron I fear the lack of a clear alternative will mean Reddit will not implode and most users will grumpily return. I wonder if there was a stronger competitor whether some subs would have already migrated over tather than stage a protest. @Gargron totally agree. It's amazing how much runway they've had to make their app the best, not needing 3rd party. Instead they've concentrated on advertising injection over good user experience @Gargron How is reddit actually set up? If they wanna go public they surely have some sort of a board and stuff, right? So if it’s just the CEO u/spez being a complete idiot, couldn’t they just fire him and bring someone in with some connections to reality? @Gargron Major galaxy-brain move to aggressively piss off your users when your site's value comes 100% from user-generated content. @Gargron I, in the other place of the spectrum, think that nothing would happen. In a couple of days they will announce that they brought a new client for IOS and that is it. Nothing will happen @Gargron I don't think what Reddit execs are doing will be a death blow for the site. Sure, it'll drive a good amount of power users away but there will most likely be more then enough casual users to keep the site afloat. Reddit execs would have to do something like make site access subscription only to drive away casual users. (By "casual users", I mean those who don't know/care about 3rd party clients. Those who use Reddit to get a quick sports update or something and nothing more) @Gargron I read earlier that they are apparently also doing "experiments" with some users logged-in on mobile browsers which forces them to download the app to use the site on Mobile. They seem to be committing. @Gargron Is there a way to browse the timeline of one Mastadon server from another Mastadon server as if it was a subreddit? @Gargron Yeah it turns out making a crappy UI and then shutting down third party apps is a terrible combination. @Gargron @mastodonmigration Given that literally all value on Reddit is generated by user content, Spez ought to have been kissing the feet of apps like Apollo - they bring the users and keep them generating content, and therefore value. He could have monetized from those apps without killing them, but I guess he chose greed. @Gargron Welcome to the Fediverse #RedditMigration Sign up here: These two instances are run by the same team as infosec.social so you can have some confidence they can handle the surge of new users. @Gargron In that latest ama, spez mentioned LLMs. I think the API rate hikes were targeting those. Wiping out the 3rd party apps were just icing on the cake. The data still has value. Once the LLM-based bots start overrunning the place, training further models off of it is the snake eating its own tail, and the value of that data plummets. This was the cash out. The site was already about to implode. @Gargron maybe if the Blackout was for several days of weeks but only for two days? old.reddit.com is far better than the normal reddit. I use old.reddit.com both on mobile and on desktop. I hope they don't kill that too. @Gargron it's funny how they want to hurt third party apps because “they are making profit, that we should be making!" as if the money we spend on third party apps is money we would have spent on reddit itself otherwise. oh sure we have finite wallets, but if i thought reddit was worth my money, i would have made different choices. they still benefit from the content i post (or posted, anyway). so much controversy this year. blizzard. twitter. DnD/WotC. I hope they all die. see you all on kbin @Gargron I had no idea that 3rd party apps existed. The main complaints I had about the reddit app were not being able to comment on a post using a picture and the repetitive and occasionally offensive ads. @Gargron I’m always amazed at how popular redit is with such a bad user experience, forcing everyone to use the official site it will actually drive people away @Gargron I don't know why you shared what I considered to be an ad for a corporate app studio, but I didn't appreciate it. I left Twitter to avoid this. Not interested in following you, if that's what you're going to do. @Gargron the main Reddit app is simply unusable with all its bloat - literally why I used to use a third party twitter client was the main app having a dump truck of ads and also Reddit but now both of them are gone. Apollo is Reddit for me. |
@Gargron So many social media places just doing their best to absolutely implode lately
